Chapter 116: The Scars Left Behind
With the seal stabilized, Naruto Uzumaki's condition calmed. The violent, crimson chakra of the Nine-Tails receded entirely, drawn back into the confines of his body.
Naruto lay still on the broken ground, a complex and unreadable emotion in his eyes. He looked out at the village, watching smoke rise from the ruins. To fall from prosperity to devastation in a single day was a bitter pill to swallow.
Jiraiya's expression was grave as he turned his gaze toward the center of Konoha. From that direction, violent shockwaves and roars continued to erupt. The battle between Gamabunta and the One-Tail, Shukaku, had reached its most fevered pitch.
Initially, the great toad had been on the defensive, hard-pressed by the Tanuki's raw power. But as the Sand and Sound shinobi were gradually repelled, Konoha's elite fighters were finally able to free themselves from their own battles. With their combined support, the tide had slowly turned, allowing Gamabunta to hold the line.
Now, with Sage Mode active, Jiraiya could finally lend his full strength to ending the threat of the One-Tail.
After giving Naruto a final, solemn instruction and confirming no immediate enemies lurked nearby, he departed in a flash, heading for the heart of the conflict.
Shunshin!
Jiraiya's figure vanished. The enraged Toad Sage was about to unleash the full might of Mount Myōboku's secret arts upon the rampaging beast.
Konoha Center
"Guy, even if we're holding Shukaku back for now, it's a temporary measure. I can feel my chakra draining fast," Kakashi panted heavily, his single visible eye fixed on the monstrous One-Tail with a deep-seated trepidation.
Beside him, Might Guy, though battered and bruised, stood ready, his fighting spirit still burning bright.
They had both been utterly defeated by Aizen's overwhelming power, left without any means to fight back. For Konoha's elite Jōnin, such a humiliating and one-sided loss was a hard blow to their pride. Had Jiraiya not intervened, they would have certainly died by the edge of Kyōka Suigetsu.
Now, facing the ferocious One-Tail, that same feeling of powerlessness resurfaced, filling them with frustration.
At that moment, Jiraiya's stalwart figure arrived.
In a flash, he appeared atop Gamabunta's head. Empowered by Sage Mode, his presence and the aura he radiated were on an entirely different level.
"You've finally arrived, Lord Jiraiya!" Morino Ibiki called out, a note of relief in his voice. Even as a seasoned Special Jōnin, he felt like an insignificant ant before the One-Tail's raw, destructive power.
"Where is Aizen? Did you finish him?" Mitarashi Anko asked quickly, her chest heaving as she caught her breath.
Anko's question was on everyone's mind. All eyes turned to Jiraiya, desperately hoping for confirmation of the traitor's demise.
However, Jiraiya's answer was not what they wanted to hear.
"No," he said, his voice heavy with regret. "I failed to stop him. He escaped."
A stunned silence fell over the group. Among them, Yūhi Kurenai's reaction was the most profound.
The beautiful Jōnin's eyes were a whirlpool of emotions—disbelief, grief, and a deep, painful regret.
Even now, she struggled to accept the reality of what she had witnessed. She had been genuinely distraught when she saw Aizen seemingly disintegrate into a blood mist under Gaara's assault. She had held high hopes for him, and a subtle, fond affection for the flawless young genius had taken root in her heart.
Over two months of daily training and interaction, every shared moment had quietly nurtured a beautiful, hopeful expectation within Kurenai. She had truly believed this young man would surpass the Legendary Sannin, becoming Konoha's most dazzling shinobi and a master of illusion who would bring great honor to the village.
But reality had shattered like glass. Aizen's shocking betrayal, his sword cutting down the Third Hokage, had also severed the last thread of hope in Kurenai's heart.
Throughout this invasion, a part of her had been running away, unwilling to fight, her mind in a state of panicked confusion.
She replayed every memory of her time with Aizen, her thoughts a muddled mess. She remembered that day at the Ichiraku Ramen stand, the way they had smiled at each other. That sincere, gentle smile was etched into her memory, leaving an indelible mark.
It was in that moment Kurenai had realized she had developed feelings for him—a subtle, ambiguous emotion caught between deep admiration and something more.
Even now, a part of her refused to believe Aizen's actions were real. She would rather believe it was all a terrible nightmare than completely abandon the hope she had placed in him.
Hearing Jiraiya confirm Aizen's escape, Kurenai made a silent, firm resolution. She would find Aizen Sōsuke herself. She would look him in the eye and demand the truth.
"Enough!" Jiraiya's sharp command broke Kurenai from her thoughts. At his order, all the elite Jōnin launched a coordinated counter-attack. A storm of dazzling ninjutsu—fire, lightning, and earth—rained down upon the One-Tail.
The situation shifted once more. Under the concentrated assault, Shukaku was forced back, its roars of fury mingling with the sounds of its defenses being pummeled. Its defeat was now only a matter of time.
Konoha Hospital, a Patient Room
Hyūga Hinata lay weakly on the hospital bed, her face pale and fragile. After witnessing Aizen dissolve into that bloody mist, the overwhelming shock and sorrow had plunged her into a deep coma.
She had only regained consciousness after the fighting had largely ended.
Now, her clear, pearly eyes slowly opened, but they were vacant and dull, clouded with a deep melancholy. Unaware of the later twists and turns, Hinata was still trapped in her grief, believing Aizen was truly dead, slain by Gaara.
"Smile. Only when you smile like the sun will the clouds disappear."
His words from their first meeting at Ichiraku Ramen played vividly in her mind. Hinata thought of Aizen's face, always adorned with that calm, gentle smile, and a faint, longing smile of her own touched her delicate lips.
It was only now, with him gone, that Hinata realized how important Aizen had become to her. He had been a quiet, steady presence that had effortlessly found a place in her heart.
It was a pity that everything was wrong. The village outside her window was still standing, but the figure she longed to see was gone.
Hinata looked out the window at the setting sun, a profound sadness settling in her beautiful eyes. Perhaps she would never see that figure again. But this sincere, budding feeling had taken root like a seed deep within her heart, and she knew it would remain there forever.
