Today's Transfiguration class entered Lynn's comfort zone.
Although he had no intention of showing off, Professor McGonagall actively gave him many opportunities to do so.
Having already learned of Lynn's exceptional talent in Transfiguration from Professor Flitwick, she had a mind to test him a bit in class.
From the most basic task of turning a matchstick into a needle, to the subsequent live transformation of small creatures that left the other young wizards amazed, Lynn completed them all perfectly.
The difficulty of Transfiguration, starting from zero, can generally be divided into seven stages: the shaping of inanimate objects (similar to sculpture, this is the foundation of Transfiguration), inanimate-to-inanimate transformation, inanimate-to-animate transformation, animate-to-inanimate transformation, animate-to-animate transformation, the living activation of inanimate objects, and human transfiguration.
Lynn was already able to complete the fourth stage—animate-to-inanimate transformation—turning smaller living things like beetles and small mice into small items like buttons and teacups.
For a young wizard who had only self-studied for two months during the holidays, this was already a very impressive achievement.
Lynn, having racked up thirty points in Transfiguration class, maxed out Professor McGonagall's favor. Always fair and strict, she showed no bias, and the Ravenclaw students attending the class had absolutely no objections to the points awarded.
"Your Transfiguration ability is already at the level of a third-year student, Lynn," Professor McGonagall said with gratification. "In fact, you only need to pay attention to and correct a few small issues in your technique, and I believe you will soon reach the level of excellence found among fourth-year students."
"I must admit, and I must tell you all, that in the study of magic, Transfiguration is the subject that relies most heavily on talent to progress."
"Not every Charms master can go far in Transfiguration. The surprise you have brought me is far greater than what Professor Flitwick told me."
"Then, Professor McGonagall!" A young wizard raised their hand and asked, "Were you this amazing when you were in school, Professor?"
Such a reckless question could easily offend someone, but Professor McGonagall didn't mind at all.
"When I was studying at Hogwarts..." Professor McGonagall recalled the past slightly. "I registered with the Ministry of Magic as a formal Animagus at the end of my second year."
"Before I even enrolled in school, I had already learned how to turn small animals into other kinds of small animals."
"Just like this."
Professor McGonagall didn't even draw her wand. She simply pointed her finger, and a white mouse used for transfiguration experiments turned into a parrot, flapped its wings to fly a circle around the classroom, and turned back into a white mouse when it landed back in the cage.
"However, I need to tell you that in Transfiguration, Hogwarts is not ahead of other wizarding schools. In distant Africa, Uagadou School of Magic has astounding research results in Transfiguration. It is not uncommon for wizards there to master the Animagus transformation by age fourteen, which corresponds to your fourth year."
"Most of them can complete the Animagus transformation by their fifth or sixth year. This transformation is hailed as the ultimate in Transfiguration and is the most difficult form of human transfiguration. But this is also related to their traditional customs and spellcasting methods. Before your ability meets the requirements, I do not allow you to attempt advanced Transfiguration at will, as it will lead to very terrible results."
"Perhaps in the not-too-distant future, you will have the opportunity to compete and exchange ideas with students from other wizarding schools. By then, you will be able to see with your own eyes the colorful brilliance of the wizarding world. Magic is wonderful, and there is fascinating magic all over the world waiting for people to explore and research."
"Then what is Hogwarts best at?"
Hermione raised her hand high; she was very curious about this.
"Hogwarts is a comprehensive school of magic. We have excellent teachers in every subject. Regarding the core magical studies—Charms, Transfiguration, Potions, and Herbology—your Professor Flitwick, Professor Snape, and Professor Sprout are all very formidable and have won many international honors. If you study seriously under each professor, I believe you will all benefit greatly."
Professor McGonagall was somewhat evasive in answering this because Hogwarts indeed didn't have one particularly outstanding subject. Transfiguration wasn't as good as Uagadou in Africa, and Herbology wasn't as good as Castelobruxo in Brazil. Although Charms and Potions weren't bad, they didn't have a prominent leading advantage either.
Flitwick and Snape were formidable, but not to the extent of being unrivaled throughout history; they could only be considered elite professors who would rank highly anywhere in the world.
At the very least, they were all individuals who had achieved the title of Master. They would be notable in any magic school worldwide. Not every professor is a master in their field, so Hogwarts has a remarkably high standard of faculty configuration; this is the foundation of its status as an established, prestigious school.
"What about Defense Against the Dark Arts?"
Harley asked curiously. Her favorite textbook was the Defense Against the Dark Arts book, The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection.
"Defense Against the Dark Arts..." Professor McGonagall looked troubled. After all, this subject had always been a sore spot for Hogwarts. "I only hope Professor Quirrell won't disappoint you too much... Sigh..."
"Alright, today's homework is to copy the transformation taboos in Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. This is content that must be memorized for learning Transfiguration. Also, go back and practice today's lesson content: turning a match into a needle. There is another class of mine this Thursday, but I will check the results of your practice in next Tuesday's Transfiguration class."
"Class dismissed."
The young wizards stood up one after another, chattering in discussion.
Lynn was surrounded by quite a few curious classmates who wanted to ask him how to practice Transfiguration well.
After finally dealing with the enthusiastic classmates, Lynn managed to pull himself away and let out a sigh of relief.
"Looks like you're quite popular."
"Cho, you're here?"
Lynn turned around and saw Cho Chang walking with a friend.
"Why do you look like you have a cold?"
Cho's nose was a bit red, and she was wearing a thin scarf around her neck.
"I do have a bit of a cold, and isn't it all because of you?" Cho rolled her eyes prettily and hummed.
"Oh~" The girl beside Cho drew out the tone. "And you said you didn't go out on a date last night?"
"Nothing of the sort, Marietta." Cho patted her best friend, then introduced her to Lynn. "This is Marietta Edgecombe, my roommate, and also my best friend."
"Hello, Marietta."
Lynn reached out and shook her hand, giving a simple greeting.
"A first-year junior, right?" Marietta blinked and looked Lynn up and down. "Looks like the Ravenclaw boys are going to be crying into their pillows. Cho is being pursued by so many people, you know."
"It would be nice if I really were her boyfriend, but regrettably, I'm not."
Lynn spread his hands. "After all, being pounced on and hugged by a girl is something that gives one a great sense of accomplishment. Cho is just lacking a warm hug right now, isn't she?"
"Get lost, go away."
Cho waved her hand in disgust. "You think you can take advantage of your senior like that?"
"I'll go to the hospital wing later to drink some Pepperup Potion and I'll be fine. Quite a few people have colds right now; Madam Pomfrey is probably about to get busy."
Watching the two of them act like this, Marietta was also a bit skeptical about whether they were dating or not. Based on their current behavior, it really didn't seem like it.
"By the way, where's Harley? She's not with you?"
"Harley found herself a new girlfriend today and tossed me aside long ago."
"Hey, unwanted Lynn, want to come have lunch with big sister?"
"I'm afraid you'll give me your cold."
"You're asking for a beating!"
