When they came back, Karl was somehow cradling two enormous bird eggs in his arms.
The shells were mottled with irregular black patterns. Each one was as large as an ostrich egg from before the apocalypse, and it was impossible to tell what species they belonged to.
Karl's face was flushed with excitement. Like a child presenting treasure, he placed the two giant eggs in front of Albert. "For you, Third Brother. I spotted them up in a tree over there."
Albert looked surprised. "You're learning fast."
No wonder Karl had been gone for so long—toward the end, he'd disappeared without a trace.
Albert lightly tapped one of the eggs, shook it, then held it toward the fire and studied it for a few seconds.
No chick yet.
He knew what to make for the appetizer.
