Chapter 101 - Chapter 101: The Island Expedition - Part 1

Chapter 101: The Island Expedition - Part 1

POV: Sam Barton

Three days of boat travel toward Nova Scotia gives the expedition team time for bonding I wasn't expecting from a group this volatile.

Klaus and Stefan maintain polite distance, centuries of complicated history requiring neutral zones. Rebekah oscillates between excitement about potential cure and fear it won't exist. Connor studies his hunter mark obsessively, tracking how it glows brighter each day we travel north.

And Bonnie practices channeling Bennett ancestors in preparation for whatever magical defenses Qetsiyah left protecting Silas's tomb.

Night two finds me on deck with Klaus, both of us unable to sleep for different reasons.

"You love Caroline," Klaus says without preamble, staring at dark ocean. "She's human. You're system-wielder but still mortal. Eventually, you'll age and die while she stays young—unless she becomes vampire."

It's the conversation I've been avoiding thinking about for months.

"I've considered it," I admit. "Every single day. I want forever with her, but not if it means dying or her becoming something she doesn't want to be."

Klaus's expression carries understanding I wouldn't have expected a year ago. "Then find way to extend your life without vampirism. The cure exists—maybe its opposite does too. Immortality without the bloodlust and weaknesses."

"You're giving relationship advice now?" I ask, surprised.

"I'm acknowledging that love is complicated when lifespans don't match," Klaus replies. "Caroline will outlive you. That's statistical certainty unless you find alternative. I can wait centuries for her if necessary—but I'd prefer she be happy with you for however long you have. Strange as that sounds."

It's probably the most honest Klaus has been about his Caroline obsession.

"Thanks," I say, meaning it.

"Don't thank me yet," Klaus counters. "When you die of old age and she's still young and beautiful and lonely, I'll be there. But until then—fight for your time with her. Make every moment count."

We drink in silence, two people who started as enemies finding common ground through caring about the same impossible woman.

The vision hits during third night's sleep, and this time it's not just images but full immersive experience.

I'm Qetsiyah—powerful witch standing in ancient temple, watching Silas and Amara declare their love. The rage and heartbreak are visceral—I loved Silas, crafted immortality for us to share eternity, but he chose Amara instead.

The immortality spell flows through my memory like I cast it yesterday: binding souls to eternal life, breaking death's natural cycle, creating something that shouldn't exist.

Then Silas and Amara steal the spell, taking immortality for themselves.

My revenge is brutal: forcing Amara to become stone anchor tethering the Other Side (supernatural purgatory I create), entombing Silas alive with the cure dangling before him for eternity, making him suffer as I suffered.

Qetsiyah's spirit speaks directly to me through the vision: "System-wielder, you are balance against those who defy death. Just as my predecessor was two thousand years ago. Stop Silas, or he'll break reality itself. The Other Side depends on him staying entombed."

I wake screaming, my four clones manifesting defensively around my bunk.

Bonnie rushes in, finding me drenched in sweat and shaking. "Sam! Another vision?"

"Qetsiyah," I gasp. "She's communicating directly. Showed me everything—the immortality spell, Silas's betrayal, the entombment. Bonnie, if Silas wakes, he could destroy the Other Side itself. That's where supernatural beings go when they die—if it collapses..."

"Every dead supernatural being returns," Bonnie finishes, her face going pale. "Vampires, werewolves, witches—thousands of years of deaths suddenly un-died."

The implications are apocalyptic.

[VISION INTELLIGENCE: QETSIYAH'S WARNING]

[SILAS THREAT LEVEL: CATASTROPHIC]

[OTHER SIDE COLLAPSE RISK: CONFIRMED]

Dawn of the third day brings island into view, and Connor's hunter mark blazes so bright it's visible through his shirt.

"There," Connor points at rocky coastline shrouded in unnatural fog. "Silas's tomb is at the island's center. I can feel it pulling me like compass."

My Sensory clone detects multiple layered magical barriers—Qetsiyah's protections still active after two millennia, maintaining supernatural defenses that would kill normal humans instantly.

"Illusions, hostile spirits, probably physical guardians," Connor warns, preparing his weapons. "Island doesn't want visitors. Stay together, trust nothing you see unless multiple people confirm it."

Klaus draws blades that gleam with what I suspect is white oak. "Let's wake a monster and hopefully convince him to stay sleeping. Should be entertaining."

The boat approaches shore through fog that parts reluctantly, revealing black sand beach and forest beyond that radiates wrongness.

I text Caroline one last time before we land: "Found the island. Going in. Love you."

Her reply comes seconds later: "Be safe. Come home."

Then my phone loses signal—the island's magic blocks communication with the outside world.

We're on our own.

[ISLAND ARRIVAL]

[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +400]

[LEVEL 38: 1,900/5,600 TO LEVEL 39]

Stefan helps beach the boat while Klaus and Rebekah scout the immediate area. Bonnie's already channeling ancestors, preparing for magical combat.

And I deploy my four clones in defensive formation, very aware that without Mind Shield and Defensive Shield, we're vulnerable in ways we haven't been since they died.

"Everyone ready?" I ask.

"To possibly die retrieving mythical cure from two-thousand-year-old tomb guarded by ancient witch's magic?" Damon would say if he were here. Instead, Stefan just nods grimly.

We step onto the beach, and immediately, the island attacks.
