Chapter 89 - Chapter 89: Connor's Choice

Chapter 89: Connor's Choice

POV: Sam Barton

Connor's hand trembles on the detonator, and I can see the moment his entire belief system collapses under Shane's casual betrayal.

"You knew about my family," Connor says, his voice breaking. "You orchestrated their deaths? Found me specifically to turn me into your weapon?"

"I found you because you were already broken," Shane replies with clinical detachment. "Molding you toward suicide by vampire was remarkably simple—hunters of The Five are so predictable in their trauma responses."

Connor lowers his weapon, turning to address the hostages. "Shane lied to me. Manipulated me. Used my family's murder to make me his puppet. I won't kill innocents for his agenda."

He releases the detonator safety, stepping away from it.

Tyler moves cautiously, hybrid senses clearly detecting that something's wrong. "Connor—"

The explosives detonate anyway.

Shane had remote triggers the entire time, and he activates them all simultaneously with Expression-powered command that bypasses Connor's manual controls.

Fire erupts across the gymnasium in coordinated blasts designed for maximum casualties.

My Defensive Shield clone projects the largest barrier he's ever attempted—golden energy expanding to cover three hundred students as explosions tear through the building. The strain is immediate and catastrophic.

"Phasing, evacuate!" I command through our mental link.

My Phasing clone blurs through the chaos with Enhanced Speed enhancing his already supernatural velocity. He phases through walls, pulling students to safety in groups of three and four, his intangible form passing through rubble that would crush normal evacuees.

Caroline and Matt coordinate the exodus with practiced efficiency born from too many supernatural crises. "Exits are blocked—everyone through the Phasing clone's extraction points!"

Tyler's hybrid strength clears debris, creating paths where explosions sealed them. Damon and Stefan crash through the building's exterior despite the danger, vampire speed letting them evacuate dozens.

Connor fights to disarm remaining explosives, my Strength clone assisting with supernatural force that tears bomb casings apart before they detonate.

The rescue takes four minutes that feel like hours—every second bringing new explosions, new structural failures, new risks.

When the smoke finally clears, three hundred students stand outside watching the gymnasium burn, and miraculously, no one's dead.

Connor lies in the rubble, severely injured from explosion proximity but alive. His hunter's mark glows on his forearm—not the complete activation Shane wanted, but something else.

"The mark," Connor gasps through pain. "It's incomplete. I never killed enough vampires to complete The Five's map. Shane needed the full mark activated through my death and the curse. But I... I failed his plan."

Liz's paramedics rush to Connor, and I see the mark flickering with partial illumination—enough to hurt, not enough to fulfill Shane's purpose.

Shane himself is long gone, fled during the chaos with his Expression magic intact.

As Connor's loaded into the ambulance, he catches my hand. "Why? Why save me after everything I did?"

"Because every life matters," I reply simply. "Even hunters who've been manipulated into weapons."

Connor's grip tightens briefly before the paramedics pull him away.

Caroline finds me in the parking lot, staring at the burning gymnasium. "You saved everyone. Again. Do you ever get tired of being the hero?"

"Every day," I admit. "But the alternative's letting people die, and I'm not built that way."

She kisses me, grounding me in human connection despite the supernatural chaos. "You're collecting broken people and making them family."

I think about Connor, about Tyler who chose hybrid transformation, about Finn who found purpose after millennia of despair, about my entire alliance built from people who'd been rejected or manipulated or broken.

"Isn't that what we all need?" I ask. "To belong somewhere?"

Caroline smiles. "Then keep building, Sam. Your family's getting bigger."
