Chapter 86: Connor Jordan Arrives
POV: Sam Barton
The attack happens at the Mystic Grill during lunch rush, and my Sensory clone's warning gives me approximately three seconds before Connor Jordan makes vampire hunting very public.
"Incoming," my clone reports. "Rooftop sniper, wooden bullets, targeting Chris at the bar."
Chris is a local vampire who's been Accord-compliant for months—blood bags from the hospital, no human victims, even helps Liz with night patrols. He's exactly the kind of vampire who proves our peace treaty works.
I blur with Enhanced Speed that still feels new and exhilarating, evacuating the three humans closest to Chris before the first shot cracks through the window.
The wooden bullet would've pierced Chris's heart. Instead, my Defensive Shield clone catches it mid-flight with golden barrier that flares bright enough to leave afterimages.
Chris blurs behind cover, vampire instincts kicking in. "What the—"
"Hunter," I reply shortly, positioning myself between Chris and the broken window. "Everyone out! Now!"
The Grill evacuates in controlled chaos—Caroline herding people toward exits with organizational efficiency, Matt helping elderly customers move faster.
Connor Jordan rappels through the shattered window with tactical precision that speaks to military training. He's maybe late twenties, dark hair, hunter's eyes that have seen too much death. And on his forearm, visible beneath his rolled sleeve, is an intricate tattoo that my parents' research taught me to recognize.
The hunter's mark. One of The Five.
"You're fast," Connor observes, reloading his weapon while studying me. "Faster than humans. What are you? Vampire? Witch? Something else?"
"Human," I reply, my Mind Shield clone manifesting beside me. "With unique abilities. Who sent you?"
Connor's eyes track my clone—shadow manifestation apparently not something he's encountered before. "Shane mentioned an anomaly. The one who doesn't fit natural order. Guess that's you."
"Professor Shane," I clarify. "The man who's manipulating you to serve his agenda. He tell you about the Mystic Falls Accord? About the peace we've established here?"
Connor laughs—harsh and disbelieving. "Peace with vampires? They're predators who chose to become monsters. All deserve death."
Chris speaks up from behind cover. "I didn't choose this! I was turned against my will, but I adapted. I feed on blood bags, I help protect this town, I harm no one."
"Vampires lie," Connor counters, throwing vervain grenade that my Defensive Shield intercepts. "It's their nature."
Damon arrives in blur of vampire speed, tackling Connor before I can intervene diplomatically. They crash through furniture, Connor's training letting him hold his own against centuries-old vampire through tactical equipment and preparation.
Wooden stakes, vervain-coated blades, fighting style designed specifically for supernatural combat.
My clones deploy strategically: Mind Shield preventing potential magical attacks from Connor's gear, Defensive Shield protecting remaining bystanders, Sensory tracking both combatants for intervention opportunities.
The fight's reaching critical point when Sheriff Liz arrives with full tactical squad, guns drawn.
"Everyone freeze!" Liz commands with authority that somehow works even on angry vampire and determined hunter.
Connor assesses the situation—outnumbered, outmaneuvered, vampire still alive despite his best efforts. He throws smoke grenade and vanishes through back exit with practiced ease.
Damon moves to pursue, but I stop him. "Let him go. We need strategy, not escalation."
"He tried killing Chris," Damon growls.
"And if you kill him, you'll inherit the hunter's curse," I counter. "Trust me on this."

That night, I pull out my parents' journals, finding the entry I'd half-remembered about The Five.
"If a hunter of The Five dies by supernatural hand—vampire, witch, werewolf, or other—their mark passes to the killer along with a curse. The cursed one experiences visions of every vampire the hunter killed, trapped in endless cycle of death and guilt. The psychological trauma invariably drives the afflicted toward madness and suicide. Under no circumstances must The Five hunters die in Mystic Falls."
My blood runs cold as I realize Shane's probable plan: bring a hunter to town, let him kill vampires to activate his mark, then orchestrate his death by supernatural means to trigger the curse and create chaos.
Connor Jordan is a weapon Shane's planning to detonate.
