Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12

Dani's POV

I stared at the message on my screen, not knowing how to answer it.

"Dinner tonight? We need to talk."

My fingers tightened around the phone slightly, but I didn't type a response. I didn't have to.

Kenneth would know I saw it.

He always did.

And even if I wanted to reply, I didn't just have anything to say to him.

I set the phone down on the desk, hiding its screen from my face and I leaned back in my chair.

This wasn't just about dinner.

It was about last night on the rooftop.

That breathless closeness. The moment we nearly crossed the line and how I had pulled away

from him.

He wasn't Raul. He didn't throw his charm around or manipulate his way into people's lives.

Kenneth is calm and easy going. Quiet. That made it harder.

That made it even more dangerous.

I exhaled and returned my attention back to my screen, and turned the message back to my

view. I stared at it. Still nothing.

My heart didn't know what to do.

Camilla's POV

I tapped my nails against the side of my wine glass, impatience taking all over me. Lancelot had

been smiling to himself for the past five minutes, like a kid with a new toy.

"Well?" I finally snapped, leaning in. "You said you had something, don't keep me waiting."

He finally looked up. The smile had taken all over his face. And this point was now chuckling.

"I found something," he said smoothly, "Something Kenneth did…..back when Dani was

hospitalized."

My breath caught and I, too, found my own smiling crawling onto my lips.

"What kind of something?" I asked, my voice sharper now.

But Lancelot only leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled.

"You'll want to sit down for this."

I narrowed my eyes and folded my arms as I leaned across the table. "I'm sitting, Lancelot.

Talk."

He chuckled lightly and then typed a few things into his keyboard and began

"What Kenneth did….It was clever. Quiet. But not clever enough."

I tilted my head. "And what has he done that's so clever?"

He leaned in, keeping his voice low, loud enough for me to hear him, "Kenneth had moved Dani

to the hospital the night of her second accident."

My eyes widened slightly, but I stayed silent.

"But here's where it gets interesting. He paid a generous sum to a few hospital staff who were

involved. Enough for them to 'forget' the main details when questioned."

He tapped his forehead with one finger and he continued. "If the truth ever gets out, Kenneth

won't take the fall. The hospital will bring up a cover story and he walks away free."

"But now we know," I said slowly, a wicked smile beginning to form on my face. "And if we leak it

the right way…"

"It'll plant the seed of doubt in Dani's mind and she would lose her trust in Kenneth." Lancelot

finished.

I sat back, the thrill of it finally running through me.

"Let's see how secure her little empire feels, when everyone starts to see the truth about her

trusted aide."

Kenneth's POV

Camila was becoming a problem I could no longer ignore.

She and her aide moved through the media, subtle and lethal, if they were both left unchecked.

But I had been watching and listening patiently, Pulling a few strings of my own. Using people

Camila would never see coming.

She thinks she was untouchable. She's wrong. She wasn't.

My phone buzzed beside me. I quickly picked it up and checked. Not from Dani.

Still no response from Dani.

I stared at our chat for a while, before locking the screen and slipping it into my coat pocket. I

could not blame her.

That rooftop moment. we both felt it. But she pulled away and since then….nothing. I didn't

hear from her.

Maybe she needed space.

But she needed to hear what I had to say about Camila.

And I wasn't the kind of man who stayed still when things started to matter.

I stepped out of my car, and crossed the pavement toward her office building. The security

guard at the front desk gave a respectful nod, as he knew my face. I've been here too many

times to not get noticed. Enough to no longer feel like a stranger in her company. One might

have even thought I worked here.

The elevator ride felt longer than it should. Maybe I was tense. I didn't know. I watched the

elevator numbers slowly tick, one by one, as if it was replicating my steady hard beating

The door closed shut behind me, shutting out the sounds of the outer office as I stepped inside

Dani's office.

She didn't notice me at first.

Dani sat behind her desk, frozen. Her eyes locked on the screen in front of her and her brows

were furrowed. Her fingers froze above the screen.

"Dani," I called her, my voice barely above a whisper.

She raised her head slowly.

The moment her gaze met mine, it felt like the room suddenly went cold. Her eyes weren't her

usual soft eyes. They were sharp. Cold. Angry.

Still, I ignored and stepped closer. "I tried reaching out," I said carefully, steadying my voice.

"You didn't reply."

She didn't say anything. She looked like she wanted to say something, maybe scream, maybe

yell, but her words never came out.

"I was worried," I added, "That's why I came."

Her expression didn't change and I still couldn't read if it was pain, betrayal or something deeper

than that.

I exhaled lightly and spoke again. "I know what Camila's been doing. And I've found a way to

deal with her. Permanently."

Dani finally moves and turns the screen she had long stared at, towards me. And the content

that was written boldly across her screen made my heart drop deeper than it had ever done.

"Kenneth, is this true?"
