Chapter 1 - The email of a lifetime

Sarah was just doing some studying in her room. Of course, it was stupid to be studying when you don't have any classes to take. But that was just what she chose to spend her time on.

There was a knock at the door, causing Sarah to turn to see her mother enter her room.

"Well, at least you knocked," said Sarah.

"Have I ever not knocked?" asked Mrs. Wilson.

"How many times have either you or Dad come in here at the worst possible times?" asked Sarah.

Her mother just sighed at the question. The number of times it has happened has decreased in recent days, but that doesn't mean it will be forgotten.

"Anyway, I got an email from your uncle today and I forwarded it to you," said Mrs. Wilson.

"Which uncle?" asked Sarah with a nervous face.

"It was your Uncle Robert, dear," said Mrs. Wilson.

"Mom!" exclaimed Sarah.

"I know that he's not exactly the most morally upstanding member of our family...," said Mrs. Wilson.

"He scammed old people out of their life savings," said Sarah.

"I know. Just give it a chance. It probably won't be too bad," said Mrs. Wilson.

"Probably?" asked Sarah.

"Just read the email," said Mrs. Wilson.

Her mother closed the door to her room. Being a bit curious, Sarah opened her email and discovered the one that her mother was talking about.

"Dear, Abigail.

Sorry to contact you so suddenly, but I needed to get this done. I just made a bold new investment by purchasing a ghost town called Arcadia. Can't find much about the place, but it seemed to have been a bustling community for a time as evident by the structures.

If you don't mind, could you ask Sarah to go over there and clean everything up? I plan to rent or sell the buildings that are in that town, so I need it in pristine condition. I know she's reluctant to work with me, but she's the only one I can see not accidentally burning the place down. It would be much appreciated if you do.

Signed,

Robert

Sarah looked at the message with interest. Renovating some ghost town in the middle of nowhere? If that didn't scream "shady", she didn't know what did. However, there might be something useful hidden in that town. She didn't know what, but there had to be something there.

"Did you read it?"

Sarah was startled for a moment before seeing her mother creep into the room.

"Yes, Mom. I read the email," said Sarah.

"And...?" asked Mrs. Wilson.

"Seems fun. I'm a bit cautious, though. For all I know, Uncle Rob could be selling me to the mafia to pay off a debt or something," said Sarah.

"Oh, please. Rob hasn't had a mafia debt in years. You'll be fine," said Mrs. Wilson.

"Think he'll mind if I bring some friends?" asked Sarah.

"You're what!?"

Sarah just sighed at Angela's yelling. She didn't need to be so loud. Ronny also seemed to agree as he had his hands on his ears.

"I'm going to do a job for my uncle," said Sarah.

"Are you sure if it's a good idea? He could be scamming you," argued Angela.

"You think I haven't considered that? I know my uncle. If there's even a one percent chance of it being a scam, it is a high possibility," said Sarah.

"And you're still going?" asked Angela.

"It could be fun to get out of town for a bit. A change of scenery could be nice," said Sarah.

"Yeah. What she said," said Ronny.

"You're agreeing with her?" asked Angela.

"Like she said, it could be fun. Besides if we do a good enough job, maybe we'll get some of the money her crazy uncle will be getting from the rentals and sales," said Ronny.

"Ugh, of course you would be thinking about the money," sighed Angela.

Angela turned to her friend with a determined look.

"Look, if you're going to do this, I'm coming with. I don't want you getting yourself into trouble over this," said Angela.

"Hey, I can come with too. My family has this RV that we never use. We can use that to get to this Arcadia place," said Ronny.

"Thanks, guys," said Sarah.
