Chapter 141 - Chapter 141: The Calculus of Obedience

Chapter 141: The Calculus of Obedience

The sudden, violent death of Uchiha Kazuo sent a shockwave of stunned silence through the assembled shinobi. All eyes were locked on the body bleeding out into the mud and the figure of Kagenori standing calmly behind it.

The non-Uchiha ninja were frozen, their minds struggling to process the blatant execution. Nara Kubota was utterly floored. He had anticipated a power play—a brutal demonstration of force to cow the Uchiha into submission. But this… this was a direct and fatal escalation. To kill a clansman in front of the entire contingent was not just establishing authority; it was declaring war on their pride.

Uchiha Fugaku's eyes burned crimson with fury and grief. "Kagenori! Why?!" he roared, his voice cracking. "Even if Kazuo was out of line, it didn't warrant his death!"

Kagenori, as if he had merely swatted a fly, casually sat down on Uchiha Kazuo's still-warm corpse, a faint, chilling smile playing on his lips. That smile, so detached and cruel, sent a primal fear coursing through every onlooker.

The Uchiha ranks seethed, their teeth gritted, their shared hatred a palpable force directed at the man using their clansman as a stool.

"I stated clearly," Kagenori began, his voice conversational yet cutting through the tension like a knife. "As commander, my word is iron law. You do not question it. Uchiha Kazuo not only questioned me, he openly advocated for disobedience. So I killed him. Is there an issue?"

"Of course there's an issue!" Fugaku shot back, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. "I was trying to calm him down! I could have reasoned with him! You didn't even give me a chance!"

Kagenori shook his head slowly, his gaze on Fugaku utterly devoid of emotion. "I gave him two opportunities to comply. He refused both. And, as you noted, he wasn't listening to you either." He spread his hands slightly. "My time is a valuable resource. The fact that I asked twice was a significant concession. He failed to seize the opportunity. His death is on his own hands. We are at war. My authority is absolute, and I have the right to execute any shinobi for insubordination." His eyes narrowed. "So... Uchiha Fugaku, do you have anything else to add?"

Before Fugaku could formulate a response, a voice, thick with rage, erupted from the Uchiha ranks. "You're just using this to vent your hatred on us!"

It was the spark that ignited the powder keg.

"Right! You want us to die, and you killed Kazuo out of spite! What kind of commander are you?!"

"We don't acknowledge you!"

"We will never follow your orders!"

The Uchiha devolved into a chorus of furious shouts and curses.

Nara Kubota's face was ashen. This was the inevitable outcome. The Uchiha's pride was their defining trait; they would never bow easily. He feared the Mist ninja would be the least of their problems if this internal rebellion wasn't quelled.

Kagenori, however, remained preternaturally calm amidst the storm of abuse, as if the venomous words were nothing more than background noise. He kept his eyes locked on Uchiha Fugaku, who returned the stare with cold fury. Fugaku believed that with the entire contingent in open revolt, Kagenori would be forced to back down. No commander could be so reckless.

Then, Kagenori smiled at him.

A cold dread, sharp and immediate, pierced through Fugaku's anger.

Kagenori stood up from the corpse, and in that single, fluid motion, the terrifying pattern of his Mangekyō Sharingan swirled into existence. The sheer, oppressive pressure of his gaze washed over the Uchiha, and the torrent of curses faltered and died.

"I will offer one final chance," Kagenori's voice was like winter ice. "Do you obey my command?"

A heavy, defiant silence was his only answer.

Kagenori's hand rested on the hilt of his ninjato. "I have no use for shinobi who will not follow orders. Those who disobey are nothing but dead weight..."

Uchiha Fugaku's eyes widened in horrified understanding. The terrible guess in his mind solidified into certainty. "NO!" he screamed, lunging forward.

But he was too slow.

Kagenori was already a blur of motion. The steel of his blade flashed, and an Uchiha Chunin—the first one who had shouted in rebellion—clutched at his throat, a bloody line opening beneath his fingers.

"You were the first to question me," Kagenori stated, his voice chillingly matter-of-fact as he moved again. "So you die first."

Fugaku rushed to intercept him, but Kagenori was a ghost, his speed transcendent. In the span of a few heartbeats, three more Uchiha—all Genin—fell, their lives extinguished before they could even form a hand seal. The other Konoha ninja watched in petrified terror. He was really doing it. He was slaughtering them right here.

Nara Kubota felt his mind go numb. He's actually going through with it.

Fugaku was desperate, but utterly ineffective against Kagenori's overwhelming speed. The Uchiha ranks broke into panicked chaos, some trying to form a defense, others simply recoiling in shock, but none could lay a hand on him.

Just as the situation teetered on the brink of a full-scale massacre, three voices cut through the chaos, loud and desperate.

"Lord Kagenori! We submit! We will obey your orders!"

"Please, stop! We were wrong! We admit our fault!"

"We confess! We apologize! Please, no more killing!"

The pleas came from Uchiha Kyosuke, Keiichi, and Ryuhei—the three who had once been broken under Kagenori's command. They had wanted to kneel the moment Uchiha Kazuo fell, but the fear of their clan's scorn had held them back. They had endured cold stares and accusations of cowardice upon their return from the Land of Hot Springs. But now, seeing their clansmen being cut down like wheat, their memories of Kagenori's absolute ruthlessness overrode everything. They knew, with chilling certainty, that he would not stop until every dissenting voice was silenced.

The three of them threw themselves to their knees, pressing their foreheads into the muddy ground in a posture of absolute submission.

A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched Kagenori's lips as he stood amidst the stunned Uchiha.

Finally.

He had been waiting for this. Waiting for a stepping stone, a pretext to de-escalate. It could have been Fugaku, or it could be these three. Without it, he could not have slaughtered all ninety-eight Uchiha; he would have been forced to stop on his own. His calculus was precise: one Jounin (Kazuo), one Chunin, and three Genin. A total of five. A bloody enough message to shatter their collective will, but not so many that the Uchiha clan would unite and bring unbearable political pressure upon Sarutobi. This was a level of carnage Danzo could help him manage. Any more, and the delicate balance would break.

He had gotten exactly what he wanted.
