Chapter 126: A Pact in the Shadows
Within the stark confines of the Root office, Danzo's proposition hung in the air between them. He had openly declared his intent to recruit Kagenori.
Kagenori met his gaze, his own expression unreadable. "Lord Danzo, may I ask a question?"
"Speak," Danzo granted, his single eye unwavering.
"Does Lord Danzo seek my allegiance?" Kagenori asked, his voice blunt and devoid of subterfuge. He was no longer a marginal figure to be manipulated. He was a weapon of immense value, and he knew it. If Danzo wanted his loyalty, the price had to be discussed.
Danzo's eye narrowed a fraction. "I do. So, what is it you desire?"
Kagenori did not hesitate. "You are aware of my goal, Lord Danzo. I wish to prevent Kushina from becoming the Nine-Tails' Jinchuriki. I propose a substitute: Uzumaki Miyuki. She is of the same clan, a prodigy in sealing arts, and my Mangekyō Sharingan can ensure the beast's control. The candidate does not have to be Kushina."
Danzo remained silent for a moment, processing. He had anticipated this demand. The logic was sound. "And in return?" he finally asked. "What do you offer?"
"My unwavering loyalty," Kagenori stated, his tone grave and final. "If Kushina is spared her fate, I will stand firmly with you, Lord Danzo. I will heed your orders and yours alone. I will become your most loyal instrument."
Danzo studied the young man before him. The value was undeniable. A shinobi with the Mangekyō Sharingan, one who had already demonstrated the ability to infiltrate a major village and unleash its Tailed Beast, was a key to unimaginable power. To secure such loyalty was worth almost any price.
But Danzo was not a man to simply agree. "This matter requires consideration," he said, his voice a low rasp. "It will depend on your performance. You must first demonstrate this loyalty you speak of. An opportunity arises soon. I am traveling to the Hidden Rain Village. You will accompany me as my guard."
Kagenori's mind raced. The Rain Village. Danzo was moving against the Akatsuki. This was the pivotal moment, the event that would shatter the original Akatsuki's dream and set a darker path in motion. And it was a major event, ripe with Witness Points.
He bowed deeply, hiding the calculation in his eyes. "As you command, Lord Danzo. Your will is my own."
The current Akatsuki was not yet the organization of nightmares it would become. It was a beacon of hope, founded on the ideal of peace through understanding, and it was gaining influence. Its growing power and its location in the war-torn Land of Rain—a buffer between Fire, Earth, and Wind—made it a potential broker for peace. With Suna leaderless and Konoha war-weary, the possibility of a negotiated end to the conflict was real.
Danzo would never allow that. War strengthened Konoha's position and his own. He had already sown seeds of doubt in the mind of Hanzo the Salamander, the paranoid leader of the Rain, convincing him that Akatsuki threatened his rule. Hanzo, who had long abandoned his own ideals for the sake of power, was easily manipulated. The stage was set for a massacre.
By bringing Kagenori, Danzo accomplished two things. He tested the boy's loyalty on a mission unknown to the Hokage, thereby binding him to the Root faction. And he gained a formidable enforcer for the dirty work ahead. As for the Jinchuriki, it was a trivial matter to Danzo. Whether it was Kushina or Miyuki was irrelevant; with Kagenori's Mangekyō under his control, the Nine-Tails itself would be his to wield.
"Report to Root at noon tomorrow," Danzo commanded. "We depart for the Hidden Rain."
"Yes, Lord Danzo." Kagenori bowed again and took his leave.
Both men were satisfied. Danzo saw a powerful new tool falling into his grasp. Kagenori saw the path to saving Kushina clearing, and a rich source of Witness Points awaiting him.
As Kagenori made his way home, his thoughts were interrupted by a sight that made his blood run cold. Walking down the street, hand-in-hand with Uzumaki Kushina, was Uzumaki Miyuki. They looked intimate, like sisters reunited.
"Kagenori!" Kushina's face lit up, and she rushed over, pulling Miyuki along. "You're back!"
"I returned today," he said, forcing a calm smile. "I saw you weren't home. Out shopping?"
"Yes! And Kagenori, you'll never believe it! One of my clansmen has come to Konoha!" she exclaimed, her joy overflowing. She pulled the other woman forward. "Let me introduce you! Miyuki, this is Kagenori, the one I'm always telling you about."
Uzumaki Miyuki met Kagenori's gaze, her expression perfectly neutral, a complete stranger. "Hello," she said smoothly. "It's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Uzumaki Miyuki."
For a split second, Kagenori was frozen. Then, his training and instincts took over. He gave a slight, polite nod, his face a mask of mild curiosity. "Hello. It's nice to meet you."
The charade was in full effect. Miyuki was playing her part perfectly, maintaining the fiction that their meeting in the Land of Grass had never happened. In the middle of a Konoha street, under the watchful eyes of the village, the three key players in his secret war stood together, bound by a truth known only to two of them, and a lie that could save the one he loved.
