Chapter 121: The Gathering Storm
A strange and fragile peace had settled over the shinobi world. The Third Kazekage's disappearance had left Sunagakure leaderless and turning inward. Kirigakure, consumed by its bloody internal policies, lashed out like a wounded animal at any who came near. Kumogakure was licking its wounds after the Eight-Tails' rampage. And Iwagakure, ever cautious, had withdrawn to the sidelines, waiting to see how the chips would fall.
It was a peace built on the weakness of others, and everyone knew it was a ticking bomb.
Two years passed in this tense stalemate. Kagenori was now eighteen, a seasoned and feared Jounin. Kakashi, at nine, was a veteran of the front lines, his childhood long since sacrificed to war and cynicism. Their partnership had only deepened, forged in shared missions and a mutual understanding of the world's hypocrisy.
During a lull in the fighting, Kakashi had been recalled to Konoha for a baffling formality: a Chunin Exam. The notion was absurd to both of them. Kakashi had been performing at a Chunin level, and beyond, for years. It was a stark reminder of the village's rigid, often illogical bureaucracy.
The wider world continued its descent. Suna, under the interim leadership of Rasa—who wielded the Third's Gold Dust Magnet Release—remained unstable. Kiri, having fully embraced its "Bloody Mist" identity, redirected its internal bloodshed outward, attacking Konoha and Cloud patrols with indiscriminate fury. Iwa continued its watchful waiting.
This left Konoha primarily facing the concerted pressure of Kumogakure. The front in the Land of Hot Springs had become a brutal stalemate, with Konoha pouring in reinforcements to pin the Cloud-nin at the border.
A new name also began to circulate in intelligence reports: Akatsuki. A mysterious organization based in the war-torn Land of Rain, they preached a philosophy of peace through dialogue and understanding. In a world drowning in blood, their message was a curious, almost naive, anomaly.
"Teacher, all hostiles have been neutralized." Kakashi's report was crisp, his face speckled with the blood of the Cloud-nin patrol they had just eliminated.
Kagenori gave a curt nod. "The Cloud's roaming patrols in this sector are thinning. We'll return to base."
Noting the grim set of Kagenori's jaw, Kakashi asked, "Your mood is dark, Sensei. What's wrong?"
"One year, Kakashi," Kagenori said, his voice low. "We have only one year left."
Kakashi understood immediately. "Mito-sama... That means Konoha will begin the Nine-Tails re-sealing ritual within the year."
"Yes."
"Are you confident in your position now?"
"No. My achievements, while significant, may not be enough to force Sarutobi's hand."
A shadow crossed Kakashi's face. "Should we return to Konoha, then?"
Kagenori shook his head. "Unnecessary. The serpents of Ryuchi Cave keep watch over Uzumaki Mito. She is aware of their presence. I will be notified the moment her condition critically declines. For now, we return to base."
Upon their return, Kagenori sought out Orochimaru. "Sensei, do you have a mission?"
The Sannin produced a scroll, a predatory smile on his lips. "One suited to your talents. The son of the Third Raikage, 'Blue Lightning' A, and the new Eight-Tails Jinchuriki, Killer Bee, are operating within the Land of Hot Water. They are emulating your tactics, hunting our shinobi. Their identities make this the highest-value target currently available. Do you accept?"
Kagenori took the scroll without hesitation. "I accept."
As he turned to leave, Orochimaru's voice stopped him. "A word of context, Kagenori. The situation is shifting in our favor. Intel from Root suggests Danzo and the Hokage are preparing to move against the Uchiha clan. And you, my disciple, are the perfect instrument for that task. Furthermore, Uzumaki Miyuki has proven to be a sealing prodigy under Kushina's tutelage. Your strength, your achievements, and your unique... heritage... are about to become immensely valuable to the village leadership. Your Mangekyō Sharingan grants you the power to make them reconsider their stance on the Jinchuriki."
Kagenori's expression did not soften. "Sensei, I do not trust in 'shifting situations.' I will not rest until the matter is settled beyond all doubt."
"Certainty is an illusion in our world, Kagenori. Change is the only constant."
"I am aware. That is why I seek to stack every possible variable in my favor. I will not subject Kushina to a life on the run, hunted by every major village, unless it is the absolute last resort. I cannot yet guarantee her safety in that scenario." He gave a slight bow. "I will depart on the mission now."
In the two years since becoming the Jinchuriki, Killer Bee had trained relentlessly. Unlike his predecessor, he had not been broken by the isolation. His irrepressible spirit and unique rhythm had even won over the Eight-Tails, and they now worked in a harmony rarely seen between beast and vessel. Moved by his friend's progress and resilience, A had brought him to the front lines, both to strike at Konoha and to further hone Bee's control over his formidable power.
Kagenori moved like a shadow through the landscape of the Land of Hot Water, his senses extended. The thrill of the hunt was different this time. He was not pursuing prey, but a worthy challenge. Since witnessing the Third Raikage's power firsthand during the attack on Kumo, he had longed for a true test against an elite of that caliber. He was tired of slaughtering those who could not fight back.
And, a cold, calculating part of him knew, a confrontation with A and Killer Bee would almost certainly yield a substantial reward of Witness Points.
With his battle lust fully ignited, Kagenori quickened his pace. The storm was gathering, and he intended to be its eye.
