Chapter 108 - Chapter 108: A New Loyalty Forged in Truth

Chapter 108: A New Loyalty Forged in Truth

Kakashi staggered as if struck, his legs giving way beneath him. He fell to the forest floor, hands clutching his head as if to contain the shattering of his entire world. "I don't understand," he gasped, the words a pained whisper. "So my father's conviction… everything he stood for… was it all a mistake?"

"It was not your father who was wrong," Kagenori's voice was firm, cutting through the boy's turmoil. "It is that these people were never worthy of his conviction."

He let out a short, weary sigh. "In these past days, you have seen the true face of Konoha, have you not? People who knew nothing of the mission's details, who had no idea what your father truly sacrificed, felt entitled to spit on his name. They insulted him, and they insulted you. The countless contributions he made during the last war—all forgotten. The talk of a village without clan barriers, built on trust? A pretty lie. The people of Konoha are fickle and self-serving. The moment their own sense of security is threatened, they will find a scapegoat, truth be damned."

Kakashi's fists clenched, his knuckles white, his expression twisting with a rage he could no longer contain.

"You are still young," Kagenori continued, his tone shifting, becoming more personal, more dangerous. "So you likely do not know my past. When I was your age, I was the one the entire village scorned."

Kakashi looked up, confusion cutting through his anger.

"My parents," Kagenori stated, the words dropping like stones, "were Konoha missing-nin."

Kakashi's visible eye widened in shock. This was a history never spoken of, a secret buried deep.

A cold, mirthless smile touched Kagenori's lips. "And the reason for their defection? A simple one. They fell in love. My mother was Uchiha. My father was Senju. Two clans, eternal rivals. Their union was a taboo the Uchiha could not abide. To be together, they fled. The Uchiha pressured the council, and my parents were branded traitors, hunted by the very shinobi they once called comrades."

He paused, letting the weight of the betrayal settle. "They found a measure of peace in hiding, but their location was discovered. Other shinobi, coveting the power of their bloodlines, attacked. My father died protecting us. My mother, carrying me, made it to the gates of Konoha, only to die there. I watched her die. Konoha had the power to save her. They chose not to. After that, the Uchiha disowned me. The villagers, their hatred for the Uchiha, redirected it all onto me. They called me 'Stray.' 'Traitor's Son.' My parents never betrayed Konoha's interests. I committed no crime. Yet we were all condemned. The Will of Fire preaches a village without clan barriers. Has the barrier between Uchiha and Senju fallen? My parents loved each other. What was their crime?"

Kagenori's gaze was a burning brand. "Kakashi, I ask you again. Is this the Will of Fire?"

Kakashi was silent, the story painting a picture of a hypocrisy far deeper and more personal than he had ever imagined.

"I feel no belonging to Konoha," Kagenori confessed, his voice low and intense. "I hold only hatred. They forced my parents from their home, hunted them like animals, and left my mother to die at their gate. They took me in not out of compassion, but because I am a vessel for two powerful bloodlines they did not want loose in the world. That is all."

He leaned closer. "When Sarutobi summoned me today, he did not care about you or the tragedy of your father. He cares only for the stability of Konoha, because if the village falls, his power vanishes. Kakashi, this Konoha—this place of coldness and shadow—it has taken both our families. Is a village like this truly worthy of our loyalty?"

The last of Kakashi's resistance crumbled. The ember of hatred in his eye flared into a cold fire. "No," he whispered, the word laced with venom. "It is not worth it. Not at all."

Kagenori extended his hand, palm open, between them. "Kakashi, our paths are the same now. We have both been betrayed. We have both watched our family die before our eyes. I am your sensei. Let me be your family now. You can trust me. I will never betray you. So, Kakashi… will you join me? Will we walk this path together, as master and disciple?"

Kakashi stared at the offered hand, a lifeline in the desolate sea of his grief and rage. The decision was made in an instant, a new loyalty overwriting the old. He placed his small, calloused hand into Kagenori's. "Sensei," he said, his voice steadier than it had been in weeks. "I will."

A true, sharp smile—devoid of warmth but full of purpose—crossed Kagenori's face. He pulled Kakashi to his feet. Together, they looked out from the darkness of the woods toward the distant, illuminated streets of Konoha. The village bustled with false normalcy, a world away from the silent pact made in the shadows.

"Our strength is not yet sufficient," Kagenori said, his voice a low murmur. "We must be patient. We will bide our time within these walls. But when the moment is right, we will leave this prison behind."

He turned to Kakashi. "Now, I will share my purpose. You have wondered who I search for in the Land of Grass. I look for a clansman of Kushina's. A survivor of the Uzumaki clan."

Kakashi's eye widened in understanding. "The Uzumaki…"

Kagenori nodded. "Konoha stood by and watched as Uzushiogakure was destroyed. Then, they had the audacity to seek out the sole surviving princess of that ruin and bring her here, not as an honored guest, but as a candidate—a vessel for the Nine-Tails. A tool for them to wield."

A cold sneer twisted Kakashi's lips. "They abandoned their allies, then shamelessly found their master's wife to use her as a Jinchuriki… Konoha… heh." In the short time he had lived with them, Kushina's genuine, fierce care had been a balm he hadn't known he needed. The revelation of her intended fate ignited a fresh, protective anger within him.

"Therefore," Kagenori's voice was icy steel, "I seek to find another of her blood to take her place. But even if I succeed, convincing Konoha to make the substitution will be nearly impossible. And my search has thus far failed. The most likely path is that I will take Kushina and we will leave Konoha behind."

"Wherever you and Kushina-nee go, I will follow," Kakashi stated immediately, his loyalty absolute.

Kagenori shook his head. "No. For now, you must remain. There is still time before events reach that point. Sarutobi pressures me to depart for the Land of Grass. I will go in two days' time. I will continue my search for Kushina's clansman there, and you… you will continue your training. You will become strong. Strong enough that when the time comes, you will not be a burden, but a pillar."
