Chapter Fifty-Seven – I've been away for too long.
That night, Angel lay awake long after the lights had gone out. The room was dark except for the soft glow from the lamp on the bedside table. The box with the photos stayed hidden under the table, out of sight, but not out of mind. She could feel it there, like a presence. Like something watching her.
She turned onto her side and stared at the wall.
Sleep did not come easily anymore.
Every time she closed her eyes, faces appeared. Smiling faces that belonged to her past but felt like strangers. Faces that expected recognition she could not give.
Angel pressed her hand to her chest and breathed slowly.
Do not panic, she told herself. Just breathe.
