Chapter 77 - Chapter 76: Giyu Was Not Disliked

"Pfft—hahaha!!!"

Before Giyu could respond, Kanroji Mitsuri burst into laughter from the side.

"Mitsuri?"

Shinobu turned to look at her.

"S-Sorry! I really couldn't hold it in!"

Mitsuri's cheeks flushed bright red as she lowered her head, still covering her mouth.

The contrast was just too much.

Shinobu's anxious seriousness.

Giyu's stiff, solemn expression.

It was strangely adorable.

No, no, don't laugh out loud!

Mitsuri tried desperately to control herself, nearly running out of breath.

Meanwhile, Giyu stiffened awkwardly.

Was his smile really that strange?

"Mr. Tomioka, this is Mitsuri. Isn't she cute?"

Shinobu coughed lightly, attempting to ease the atmosphere.

Giyu glanced at Mitsuri.

"...Terrifying."

Silence.

Mitsuri froze.

Shinobu's eye twitched.

"Terrifying? She's clearly cute! I'll give you one chance to rephrase that, Mr. Tomioka, or I'll beat you up on Mitsuri's behalf! That's a horrible thing to say to a girl!"

Mitsuri shrank into herself, nervously poking her fingers together.

Terrifying?

Was he saying she was strange?

Oh no, oh no, oh no.

She had just joined the Demon Slayer Corps and already left a terrible impression on a Hashira.

This was a disaster.

"I… misspoke. You're not terrifying. You just feel… unusual."

Giyu genuinely meant she was unique.

But Mitsuri heard something else entirely.

Unusual.

Strange.

She covered her face.

"I-I'm sorry for disturbing you, Tomioka-san!"

She turned and tiptoed away in embarrassment.

"Mr. Tomioka, can you speak properly for once?!"

Shinobu was at her limit.

Every sentence he uttered somehow wounded someone.

No wonder people misunderstood him.

"Mr. Giyu, come apologize to Mitsuri, or you really will be disliked!"

Without thinking, Shinobu grabbed Giyu's hand and pulled him along.

Her hand was soft.

Warm.

Giyu stared at the contact, his throat tightening slightly.

Then, with unexpected seriousness, he said, "Miss Butterfly, I am not disliked."

Shinobu blinked.

What kind of response was that?!

The Kamado Household

Snow blanketed the hillside.

"Heiya, heiya, we're here!"

Makomo cheerfully set down the wooden box on her back.

"Makomo, are we finally here?"

Ryuya's voice came from inside.

During the day, he could only travel hidden inside the box, carried by Makomo.

They had traveled for two days and nights straight.

"Yes, Master. The sun has set."

Makomo opened the lid.

Ryuya stepped out and returned to his normal size.

The snow-covered mountains.

Bare trees.

A solitary wooden house standing quietly against the white landscape.

The sight felt familiar.

"Master, follow me and don't get lost!"

Makomo beamed.

Lost?

The house was right in front of them.

Still, Ryuya let her lead.

She knocked on the door.

"Is anyone home? Makomo is here!"

Footsteps approached quickly.

"Makomo? Is that you?"

The door opened to reveal a girl in a pink kimono.

Her eyes were bright and lively.

For a split second—

Ryuya froze.

Nezuko?

No.

Not quite.

This was younger.

Kamado Kie.

"Mmm! Did you miss me?"

Makomo grinned.

"Yes!"

Kie grabbed her hand and pulled her inside happily.

"Mother! Everyone! Makomo is back!"

Ryuya followed quietly.

Three small children soon gathered around Makomo.

They stared at him curiously.

He recognized their faces.

But their names?

That was another matter.

"This is my Master, Ryuya!"

Makomo announced proudly.

"Welcome, Ryuya-san."

Kie smiled warmly, holding the baby Rokuta in her arms.

"Thank you for taking care of Makomo."

Ryuya inclined his head politely.

"Makomo is a good disciple. I'm grateful you've looked after her."

Makomo quickly stepped in to help.

"Master, this is Auntie Kie. Those three are Hanako, Shigeru, and Takeo, and the baby is Rokuta."

"Nice to meet you all."

Ryuya's gaze moved subtly around the room.

Kamado Tanjuro wasn't here.

Had he already passed?

Before he could dwell on it, another soft voice echoed from inside.

"Has Makomo's Master arrived?"

A girl peeked out from a side room.

Long black hair.

Cherry-pink eyes.

Delicate features.

Even without the bamboo muzzle—

Ryuya recognized her instantly.

Kamado Nezuko.

"Nezuko?"

The name slipped from his lips.

She blinked in surprise.

"Huh?"

They had never met before.

Makomo hadn't introduced her yet.

"Master, how do you know Nezuko's name?"

Makomo narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

Her brows furrowed tightly.

Was there something she didn't know?

Ryuya felt the weight of two pairs of curious eyes on him.

Ah.

That was troublesome.
