Chapter 56 - Chapter 55: Bloody Battle

"Kanae, you're far too naive."

Ryuya's voice was cold, but beneath it churned something raw.

"You keep talking about peace between humans and demons. Yet you still stand with the Demon Slayer Corps. You never truly consider demons—their struggles, their suffering. You don't understand them at all. Instead, you impose your own ideals and expect them to accept it."

His grip tightened on his blade.

"That dream of yours will never come true. And don't mention Sanemi Shinazugawa in front of me again. I detest him."

Irritation burned in his chest.

He had to admit it.

He still liked Kochou Kanae.

He liked her innocence. Her kindness. The purity in her eyes.

That was why he couldn't bring himself to kill her.

During the Tamayo incident, he could have erased her memory. It would have been safer.

But he hadn't.

At the time, he didn't understand why.

Now he did.

He had been lonely.

He had wanted someone who could truly understand him. Someone who could share his burdens.

He had trusted her once.

Ryuya was not a patient man. He would only trust someone once. And what he hated most was betrayal.

But Kanae hadn't betrayed him. She had kept her promise. She hadn't revealed anything about Tamayo.

That had moved him.

For a moment, he thought he had found someone he could confide in. Even if she wasn't strong enough to fight beside him, having someone who could listen—to ease the loneliness—was enough.

But when Kanae chose to save Sanemi—

He realized she still belonged to the Demon Slayer Corps.

She had not chosen him.

There was no favoritism. No special place for him.

That disappointed him more than he expected.

He tried to forget her.

Time would dilute everything.

She would become just another fleeting figure in the long stretch of years.

But fate kept bringing her back into his sight.

Ryuya never cared about the labels of demon or human. He did not share the deep-rooted hatred of other demons.

All he wanted was peace.

A quiet life.

A companion to walk beside him until the end.

Life had forced him to commit unforgivable acts—for survival, for security, to eliminate future threats.

He never claimed righteousness.

He was just an ordinary person.

Ambitious.

Lonely.

Fragile.

"Wu Ya…"

Kanae's voice trembled.

As she listened, something inside her finally shifted.

Gyomei had once told her: loving someone means accepting everything about them—not just their goodness, but their flaws, their burdens, their world.

She had always viewed everything from her own perspective.

She wanted harmony.

She wanted perfection.

She wanted the world to follow her ideals.

But she had never truly tried to understand Ryuya.

She had never stood in his world.

Never felt his loneliness.

Never carried his weight.

She had only tried to pull him into hers.

She was wrong.

Tears streamed down her face.

So that was why he hated hearing Sanemi's name.

It wasn't just anger.

It was possessiveness.

A wounded pride.

A desire to matter.

Kanae's heart, once so clueless about love, began to understand.

She made a decision.

She would step into his world.

She would understand him.

She would experience his hardships and shoulder his burdens.

Only by walking in his world could she truly grasp his heart.

Naive fantasies alone would never create peace.

"Moon Breathing, First Form: Dark Moon—Evening Palace!"

Ryuya swung.

A purple crescent crashed into Kanae's Nichirin Blade.

Crack.

Her pink blade split cleanly in two.

She froze—

—and Ryuya struck her with his palm, sending her flying back toward the Hashira.

"Flower Hashira, are you alright?" Tengen Uzui asked urgently.

She forced a pale smile. "I'm fine… my Nichirin Blade just broke."

Without her blade, she couldn't use Flower Breathing.

Her Blood Demon Art alone wasn't enough.

"Damn it!!"

Sanemi Shinazugawa's veins bulged.

Behind Ryuya, he saw him—

His younger brother, Genya Shinazugawa, bound to a pillar.

Their eyes met.

Genya immediately looked away, trembling.

Sanemi's fury exploded.

He couldn't win normally.

So he made a decision.

"Shinazugawa, what are you doing?" Gyomei Himejima's voice trembled. Though blind, he could smell it.

Blood.

Sanemi's blood had a distinct scent.

And it was growing stronger.

"What the hell are you doing?" Tengen shouted.

Sanemi dragged his blade across his own wrist.

Blood poured freely.

Drops splattered onto the ground.

"Enough talking. We're going in."

His eyes were wild.

Ordinary methods wouldn't work.

He would fight drenched in blood if he had to.

No matter what—

He would save his brother.
