[Former Unaffiliated Territory — Sealed Structure, November 23rd, 1:14 AM]
The outer seal recognized Sasuke's chakra from the previous visit. The door opened without resistance this time — the conditions Hatsumi had set were still active, which meant she had extended them deliberately.
She knew they were coming back.
Naruto came in first, pack over one shoulder, a thermos of hot soup in his left hand that he had made himself at midnight in the tower's small kitchen because Hiruzen had said bring something warm and Naruto took instructions literally when they mattered.
The lamp was still burning. The reservoir had been refilled again — the level was higher than they'd left it.
She was here. Somewhere in the space between the lamp's flame and whatever state she was suspended in, she was here and she was maintaining this.
Shisui set up beside the lamp with the notation Tobirama had transmitted. He had memorized the sixteen character sequence on the walk over. His brush moved quickly, precisely, the pre-Foundation strokes flowing with the ease of someone who had studied Tobirama's methodology long enough that it had become muscle memory.
He applied chakra to the completed seal.
The lamp flame moved.
Not in any draft — the room had no draft. It moved deliberately, the way a person moved when they were trying to communicate through the only medium available to them. Three short pulses, then two long, then three short again.
Shisui had the key. He translated immediately. "She says: You came back. Thank you."
Naruto set the thermos on the desk. He sat down cross-legged on the floor in front of the lamp, which put him at eye level with the flame, which felt like the right posture for this conversation.
"We brought soup," he said. "I know you can't eat it. But Hiruzen-sama said bring something warm, and I didn't know what else to do."
The flame pulsed. Shisui translated: "That's very like a Hokage."
"He's a good one," Naruto said.
The flame: "I know. I've been watching, when I can. The scroll. All of it."
Naruto stared at the flame. "You saw the ranking arc."
"From the beginning." A pause in the pulsing — concentration being gathered, Shisui had said, each complex message costing her something. "I was outside it. But I watched. Sixteen categories. The village was seen."
"And you weren't," Naruto said quietly.
A long pause. Then: "No. I was outside the story. But that was my choice. I needed to stay outside long enough to document what I found."
Itachi said: "Hatsumi-san. The person currently using the network. Their sealing methodology. Can you describe it in as much detail as you can manage."
The flame worked through several pulses. Shisui translated steadily, building the description piece by piece — the character formation style, the activation sequence structure, the specific way the binding layer was organized in relation to the sealing matrix. Technical details that required considerable concentration to convey through a flame.
When she finished, the lamp dimmed slightly. Recovering.
The Sealing Card that Shisui had propped against the wall — Tobirama's connection — had been silent through the communication.
Now it spoke.
Tobirama: "Stop."
Everyone looked at it.
Tobirama: "The third element of the methodology she described. The binding layer organized in radial opposition to the sealing matrix, with a five-point anchoring structure."
Shisui: "Yes. That's what she described."
Tobirama: "Ask her if the anchoring points move clockwise or counterclockwise when activated."
Shisui turned to the flame. He conveyed the question.
The flame answered immediately. No hesitation, no recovery pause. This one she knew without concentration.
"Counterclockwise," Shisui said. "She says counterclockwise, with a slight inward spiral at the third point."
The Sealing Card went silent.
Thirty seconds passed.
Naruto counted them. He had gotten very good at sitting with silences that mattered — better than he'd been two months ago, before the census, before the scroll. But this one was harder than most, because Tobirama going silent for thirty seconds was not the same as anyone else going silent.
Tobirama did not go silent by accident.
"What is it," Naruto said, to the Card.
Tobirama: I know what that is. I wish I didn't.
