Chapter 236 - The Fourth Day. Sakura Breaks a Boulder.

Konoha --- Tsunade's Training Ground

The boulder had been there for three days.

Tsunade had placed it on day one of the strength training.

Didn't tell Sakura why.

Just placed it and said we'll come back to this.

It was significant.

Not enormous.

Significant.

The kind of boulder that made a point.

Sakura had been looking at it every morning.

Not trying to break it.

Not yet.

Just looking.

She'd been doing the other work.

The healing pulse training.

The bilateral split.

The chakra threading exercises that had gone from fourteen failures to five to two to occasionally just working.

She'd been building.

Day four.

Five in the morning.

Tsunade arrived at five-oh-three.

She looked at Sakura.

Sakura was looking at the boulder.

"The healing pulse," Tsunade said.

"Twenty-four minutes last night."

"And the bilateral---"

"Fifty-two seconds."

Tsunade was quiet.

She thought about every two days instead of three.

About you're adapting faster than standard rate.

She looked at Sakura's face.

At the jaw-set that had been there since the first day.

At the specific quality of someone who had decided something and was executing it every morning at five without being reminded.

"The boulder," Tsunade said.

Sakura looked at her.

"Today?" Sakura said.

"Today," Tsunade said.

Sakura turned to the boulder.

She gathered the chakra concentrate.

The way she'd been gathering it for three days.

Building it in the right hand.

The specific medical chakra control that Tsunade used.

Not the raw force of strength training.

Precision.

Then release.

She thought about twenty-four minutes of healing pulse.

About fifty-two seconds of bilateral split.

About the fourteen failures becoming zero.

She thought about what her hands could hold.

She brought her hand down.

The boulder split.

Not shattered.

Split.

Clean down the middle.

Both halves settling to either side with the specific patience of things that have just discovered they were less solid than they appeared.

Sakura stood.

She looked at the halves.

She looked at her hand.

"Again," Tsunade said.

Sakura looked at her.

Tsunade was pointing at the left half.

Sakura gathered the chakra again.

Different position this time.

The angle adjusted for the smaller surface.

She brought it down.

The left half split into thirds.

"Again," Tsunade said.

She pointed at the largest piece.

Sakura split it.

And again.

And again.

She kept going until the pieces were too small to make a clean point.

Which took seven more attempts.

When she stopped, the boulder was rubble.

She straightened.

She looked at Tsunade.

Tsunade was looking at the rubble.

Then at Sakura's hand.

Then at the rubble again.

"Four days," she said.

Not to Sakura.

Just --- noting it.

"Yes, Lady Tsunade."

"Four days of strength training." She paused. "I expected six at minimum."

Sakura said nothing.

She was breathing harder than she liked.

The chakra concentration had been intense.

But her hand wasn't shaking.

Not anymore.

"Lady Tsunade," she said.

"Mm."

"The scroll said I'd be remarkable eventually." She looked at the rubble. "I'm choosing to interpret 'eventually' as 'as soon as possible.'"

Tsunade looked at her.

She thought about a girl who had showed up on day one and reported her own shortcomings before being asked.

She thought about the best thing Tsunade ever taught was that you could fall apart and still be worth something.

She thought about this girl who was apparently going to skip the falling apart part and go directly to being worth something.

She thought that was probably fine.

Better than fine.

"Tomorrow," Tsunade said. "We start the diagnostic chakra applications. You've earned the next stage."

Sakura looked at her.

She didn't react outwardly.

She filed it under things that were kind without being announced.

She was getting very good at filing those.

"Yes, Lady Tsunade," she said.

Tsunade walked away.

She got three steps before she added without turning:

"The hand control is cleaner than I expected. You have good instincts."

Sakura stood in the rubble of a boulder.

She pressed her lips together.

She did not allow herself to react until Tsunade was fully out of sight.

Then she looked at the rubble.

She allowed herself exactly three seconds of feeling it.

Then she started the next exercise.

Group Chat:

[Sakura Haruno @Naruto Uzumaki: I split the boulder.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: THE BOULDER?!]

[Sakura Haruno: Day four.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: SAKURA-CHAN!! DAY FOUR?!]

[Sakura Haruno: She said she expected six minimum.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: YOU BEAT TSUNADE'S TIMELINE BY TWO DAYS??]

[Sakura Haruno: It was seven times. I split it seven times.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: SEVEN TIMES?! YOU SPLIT A BOULDER SEVEN TIMES ON DAY FOUR?!]

[Sasuke Uchiha: Good.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: SASUKE!! "GOOD"?! SHE SPLIT A BOULDER SEVEN TIMES---]

[Sasuke Uchiha: That's what good means.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: I KNOW WHAT GOOD MEANS BUT IT DESERVES MORE THAN GOOD---]

[Sasuke Uchiha @Sakura Haruno: Well done.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: "WELL DONE"?! HE SAID "GOOD" FIRST AND NOW "WELL DONE" IS---]

[Sakura Haruno: Naruto.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: WHAT.]

[Sakura Haruno: Thank you.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...you're going to be incredible.]

[Sakura Haruno: I know.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: YOU KNOW?!]

[Sakura Haruno: The scroll said so. I choose to believe it.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...yeah.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: yeah that's right.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: you deserve it.]

[Sakura Haruno: ...thank you, Naruto.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: you're welcome.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: now i have to go split something bigger than a boulder so you don't outpace me completely.]

[Sakura Haruno: You can't outpace me. I have a head start.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: NOT FOR LONG---]

[Sasuke Uchiha: You're doing wind nature training. You can't split boulders yet.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: I COULD SPLIT ONE WITH A RASENGAN---]

[Sasuke Uchiha: That's not what this is about.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: IT'S ABOUT SPLITTING THINGS AND I CAN SPLIT THINGS---]

[Sakura Haruno: It's about precision.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: I HAVE PRECISION---]

[Sasuke Uchiha: You have power.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: THOSE ARE THE SAME---]

[Sasuke Uchiha: They are categorically different.]

[Sakura Haruno: Completely different.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...]

[Naruto Uzumaki: okay fine i'll develop precision.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: i'll be very precise.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: extremely precise.]

[Sasuke Uchiha: You don't need to say it like that.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: like what.]

[Sasuke Uchiha: Like you're going to make precision happen by force.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...that's not---]

[Sasuke Uchiha: That's exactly what you're going to do and it's going to take longer because of it.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...]

[Naruto Uzumaki: tobirama-sensei]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I'm aware of the conversation.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: is sasuke right.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...]

[Naruto Uzumaki: how do i get precision without forcing it.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The same way you learned stillness.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...the census.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: What does the census do?]

[Naruto Uzumaki: gives my attention something small while the big thing happens at the edge.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Wind nature needs the same approach. Give your attention the entry angle. Let the precision develop at the edges.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...oh.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: that's what i've been doing wrong.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: i've been making the precision the main thing instead of the side thing.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: ...]

[Naruto Uzumaki: i'm going back to training.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Good.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: thank you tobirama-sensei.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Stop---]

[Naruto Uzumaki: THANK YOU TOBIRAMA-SENSEI.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...]

In the Pure Land:

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: HAHAHA!! TOBIRAMA!! HE'S DOING IT AGAIN!!]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I see that.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: HE DOES IT EVERY TIME YOU SAY SOMETHING USEFUL!! IT'S HIS WAY OF SAYING HE APPRECIATES YOU!!]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I'm aware of what it means.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: AND YOU KEEP ANSWERING!!]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: ...]

[Uchiha Madara: He has a student, Hashirama. We've established this.]

[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: I do NOT---]

[Uchiha Madara: He does. Let him have it.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: MADARA!! DEFENDING TOBIRAMA!! THIS IS A HISTORIC DAY!!]

[Uchiha Madara: I'm stating facts. Don't make it sentimental.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: IT'S VERY SENTIMENTAL AND I LOVE IT!!]

[Uchiha Madara: HASHIRAMA---]

Konoha --- Team 7's Training Ground

Naruto returned.

He'd been gone for thirty minutes.

Wind nature attempt fifty-three in the stand where the natural energy was cleaner.

He was trying a different approach this time.

Give the attention the entry angle.

Let the precision develop at the edge.

He tried it.

Attempt fifty-three.

Entry: clean.

The wind nature chakra knew where it was going.

Edge: the precision arrived on its own.

Not forced.

Just: there.

Twelve seconds before dispersal.

Consistent throughout.

He stood very still.

He looked at the dispersal pattern.

He went and found Sasuke.

"Twelve seconds," he said.

Sasuke looked at the pattern.

He read the intention behind the technique.

"The precision is developing correctly," he said. "The entry is stable. The exit still needs definition."

"Working on it," Naruto said.

"I know." Sasuke paused. "Twelve seconds is significant progress."

"From nine yesterday."

"Yes."

"Three seconds in one session."

"Yes."

Naruto looked at the pattern.

He thought about what Tobirama had said.

About the census approach.

About the big thing happening at the edge while the attention is somewhere else.

He thought about how it kept working.

The same principle.

Applied to different things.

He thought about what else it applied to.

He thought about a lot of things working on the same underlying structure.

He thought about ten years.

He thought about what ten years of this looked like.

He thought he was getting less scared of the length of it and more interested in what would be at the end of it.

That was probably right.

That was probably exactly right.

"Sasuke," he said.

"Mm."

"Are you going to be here tomorrow?"

Sasuke looked at him.

"Yes," he said.

"And the day after."

"Yes."

"And so on."

"Yes." A pause. "Are you going somewhere?"

"No," Naruto said. "I just wanted to confirm."

Sasuke looked at him.

"I'm going to be here," he said. "Same as always."

Naruto smiled.

Not the performing grin.

Just smiled.

"Good," he said.

He went back to the wind nature training.

Sasuke watched him go.

He looked at the training log in his pocket.

Cultivate capability in service of being present for what matters.

He thought about what present actually meant.

It meant: here.

Tomorrow.

And the day after.

And so on.

He thought that was a good definition.

He went back to his session.

The training ground was full.

The morning was good.
