Chūnin Exam Arena --- Konoha
The scroll pulsed once.
Twice.
Then the new section's title solidified in gold:
[Hidden Variable Ranking: Those Who Shaped Events From the Shadows.]
[These are not the heroes of the story. They are the hands that moved the pieces without appearing on any other list.]
[Some of them know what they did. Some of them don't.]
[All of them changed everything.]
The entire ninja world went very still.
Shaped events from the shadows.
That was a category with a lot of candidates.
Group Chat:
[Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki: ...I have a bad feeling about this one.]
[Fourth Raikage A: Same. Very bad feeling.]
[Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi: As do I. The last three rankings have been deeply uncomfortable for specific individuals.]
[Uchiha Madara: The scroll will name names.]
[Uchiha Madara: I'm looking forward to it.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju @Uchiha Madara: You realize you might be on this list.]
[Uchiha Madara: ...I'm still looking forward to it.]
[Uchiha Izuna: Nii-san, that's either very confident or very concerning.]
[Uchiha Madara: Both. Obviously.]
The rankings began from the bottom.
10th through 6th appeared in quick succession --- Kabuto, Zetsu, Obito at 5th with a brief preview note that said full evaluation to follow, Danzō at 4th---
When Danzō's name appeared the arena erupted immediately.
[Fourth Raikage A: DANZO!! THERE HE IS!!]
[Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki: Root Leader. Of course he's on this list.]
[Fifth Mizukage Terumi Mei: He's been pulling strings since before I was born. Of course.]
[Naruto Uzumaki: Who's Danzō?]
[Kakashi Hatake: ...Naruto.]
[Naruto Uzumaki: What? I'm asking a question!]
[Kakashi Hatake: He's a Konoha Elder. Runs an organization called Root. You've probably walked past him without knowing.]
[Naruto Uzumaki: Is he a bad guy?]
Hiruzen Sarutobi, watching this exchange from the upper observation platform, felt a migraine forming behind his left eye.
Down in the arena, Naruto read the chat carefully.
Nobody answered his question directly.
"...He's a bad guy," Naruto concluded.
Shikamaru: "That's a complicated---"
"He's a bad guy."
"Naruto, political situations are rarely black and whi---"
"Bad guy."
Shikamaru closed his mouth.
He opened it again.
Closed it.
"...Yeah," he said finally. "He's a bad guy."
Root Headquarters
Danzō read his own name on the scroll with the expression of a man who had just stepped on something wet in his socks.
His evaluation hadn't appeared yet.
Just the placement.
4th on the Hidden Variable Ranking.
"Fourth," he said.
"Yes, Lord Danzō," said Fu.
"Not first."
"...No, Lord Danzō."
"Who is above me."
Fu was quiet for a tactful moment.
"The results haven't fully appeared yet, Lord Danzō."
"Then we wait."
He said it very calmly.
Nobody in the room was fooled.
The scroll moved to 3rd.
[3rd Place: Uchiha Obito.]
[Full evaluation attached. See sub-section: The Boy Who Broke the World.]
Kakashi went very still.
That was all.
Just still.
Like someone had pressed pause on him.
Nobody spoke to him.
Naruto looked at him.
Opened his mouth.
Sakura put a hand on his arm.
He closed it.
Kakashi was staring at the scroll with an expression nobody had the right words for.
The sub-section began opening.
It was long.
It was going to be very long.
The scroll moved ahead to 2nd place first --- as if giving Kakashi a moment before the full Obito evaluation dropped.
[2nd Place: Uchiha Madara.]
Group Chat:
[Uchiha Madara: As expected.]
[Uchiha Izuna: Nii-san! Second place!!]
[Uchiha Madara: I would have preferred first.]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Madara! Who do you think is above you?!]
[Uchiha Madara: ...If it's you, I'll riot.]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Haha! I don't think it's me!]
[Uchiha Madara: Then who---]
[1st Place.]
The scroll paused.
That dramatic pause it did for important entries.
Longer than usual.
Long enough that the entire ninja world leaned forward without meaning to.
Then:
[1st Place: Bai Yan.]
[Ichiraku Ramen. Ordinary civilian. Son-in-law of Teuchi.]
Complete and total silence.
Then:
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: ...Who?]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Who?]
[Fourth Raikage A: Who?]
[Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki: Who?]
[Uchiha Madara: ...]
[Uchiha Madara: WHO?!]
Konoha --- Chūnin Exam Arena
Every head in the arena turned.
Because people in the immediate vicinity of the audience stands had a very simple process of elimination available to them.
Ichiraku Ramen.
Son-in-law of Teuchi.
In the arena.
Right now.
Sitting in row seven of the civilian audience section.
Eating a chestnut.
Bai Yan felt approximately four hundred pairs of eyes land on him simultaneously.
He peeled the chestnut.
"Honey," Ayame said, very quietly.
"Mm."
"The scroll just put your name on the top of the Hidden Variable Ranking."
"Mm."
"Above Uchiha Madara."
"Mm."
"In first place."
"Mm."
She looked at him.
He looked at the chestnut.
"Are you going to explain," she said slowly, "or are you going to finish that chestnut first?"
He considered this.
"I can do both."
She pinched him.
Hard.
"OW---"
"Explain."
"I---it's complicated---"
"Then start from the beginning."
The scroll's evaluation appeared.
The entire ninja world read it simultaneously.
[Bai Yan. Transmigrator. Arrived in Konoha approximately seven years ago via unknown mechanism. Married Ayame, daughter of Teuchi, proprietor of Ichiraku Ramen. Has since operated under the cover of being an ordinary civilian noodle chef.]
[He is not ordinary.]
[Abilities include but are not limited to: temporal manipulation, spatial displacement, chakra-independent power that operates outside the laws of this world's physics, and foreknowledge of events that have not yet occurred.]
[Hidden Variable contributions:]
[- During the Chūnin Exam reward distribution, stopped time and redistributed the Transformation Pills to ten different individuals, altering the trajectory of at least six major future events.]
[- Has directly observed and subtly influenced Konoha's civilian infrastructure and supply chains in ways that have kept the village stable through multiple crises.]
[- Has chosen, repeatedly and deliberately, not to intervene in events he could have prevented.]
[This last point is what places him first.]
[Not because it was right. But because the choices he did make, and did not make, shaped everything around them.]
[The scroll does not rank morality. It ranks impact.]
[Bai Yan's impact: incalculable.]
[Reward: Observer's Anchor --- Stabilizes the holder's existence in this world permanently, preventing forced return to the world of origin. Additionally grants limited scroll-reading ability, allowing the holder to view upcoming events with reduced clarity.]
The ninja world processed this.
It took a while.
Group Chat:
[Uchiha Madara: THE RAMEN SHOP MAN.]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: THE RAMEN SHOP MAN!!]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: He stopped time. During the Transformation Pill distribution. THAT'S where the pills went.]
[Fourth Raikage A: HE'S BEEN SITTING IN THE AUDIENCE THIS ENTIRE TIME?!]
[Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki: EATING CHESTNUTS?!]
[Uchiha Madara: ...Hashirama.]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Yes?]
[Uchiha Madara: The man who ranked above me on the Hidden Variable Ranking has been sitting in the civilian section eating chestnuts.]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Yes.]
[Uchiha Madara: While I was over here plotting the Fourth Great Ninja War.]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: ...Yes.]
[Uchiha Madara: AND HE OUTRANKED ME BY DOING NOTHING.]
[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Well, he stopped time once---]
[Uchiha Madara: HASHIRAMA!!]
Konoha --- Chūnin Exam Arena
Naruto spun around in his seat and stared at Bai Yan.
He'd eaten at Ichiraku his entire life.
He knew this man.
He'd handed this man empty bowls a thousand times.
"...Bai Yan-san," he said slowly. "You--- you stopped time?"
Bai Yan looked at him.
"Once," he said, very reasonably.
"You STOPPED TIME."
"It was brief."
"YOU STOPPED TIME AND GAVE ME A TRANSFORMATION PILL---"
"I distributed them equitably---"
"I TURNED INTO A GIRL---"
"That was the pill's natural function. I didn't design the pill."
Naruto stared at him.
Bai Yan peeled another chestnut and offered it to Ayame.
She took it mechanically.
She was reading the scroll evaluation with the expression of someone very calmly making a list in her head.
"Honey," she said.
"Mm."
"You've had foreknowledge of events this entire time."
"Yes."
"You knew everything that was going to happen."
"Most things. The scroll changes things."
"You knew about Naruto's parents."
"Yes. I told you that earlier."
"You knew about the Konoha Crush Plan."
"Yes."
"You knew about Orochimaru."
"Yes."
"You've been making ramen." She said it very flatly. "While knowing all of this."
"The ramen is genuinely good, Ayame. I wasn't just---"
"Bai Yan."
"Yes."
"Is there anything else you know that you haven't told me?"
He thought about this honestly.
"...Several things."
She looked at him.
"We're going to have a very long conversation tonight," she said.
"I expected that."
"Good."
She turned back to the scroll.
Ate the chestnut.
Very composed.
Bai Yan had the feeling that "very composed" was doing an enormous amount of work right now.
Hidden Mist Village
Mei Terumi was reading the evaluation with her arms tightly folded.
"He's been living in Konoha this whole time," she said.
"Yes, Lady Mizukage," Chōjūrō said.
"With time-stopping abilities."
"Apparently."
"And he chose to run a ramen shop."
"...Yes."
She was quiet for a moment.
"Chōjūrō."
"Yes?"
"If I had time-stopping abilities, I would not run a ramen shop."
"...What would you do, Lady Mizukage?"
She smiled.
Very slowly.
Chōjūrō had a sudden terrible feeling about the next decade of Mist Village foreign policy.
Hidden Stone Village
"He outranked Madara," Ōnoki said.
"Yes, Grandpa."
"By eating chestnuts in the audience section."
"That's not exactly what the scroll said---"
"That is functionally what happened." He paused. "...I need to rethink some things."
Kurotsuchi glanced at him. "Like what?"
"Like whether doing nothing is sometimes worth more than doing everything." He stroked his beard. "In certain situations."
Kurotsuchi had absolutely no idea what to do with that.
She wrote it down anyway.
Pure Land
The Sage of Six Paths had been watching Bai Yan since the scroll appeared.
He was the only one who hadn't been surprised by the name.
He'd felt the anomaly the moment this man had arrived in the world---
a presence that didn't belong to the fabric of this reality, carrying knowledge like a weight he'd decided to wear lightly.
He'd watched Bai Yan stop time during the Transformation Pill distribution.
Watched him distribute the pills with the calm efficiency of someone rearranging furniture.
He'd considered intervening.
He hadn't.
Because the anomaly wasn't dangerous.
It was, if anything, a correction.
Like the scroll itself.
[Sage of Six Paths: Bai Yan.]
In the audience, Bai Yan's eyes moved to the chat.
He saw the message.
[Sage of Six Paths: You've known about me since you arrived.]
Bai Yan read it.
Considered his reply for a moment.
Then typed, very simply:
[Bai Yan: Yes.]
[Sage of Six Paths: And yet you said nothing.]
[Bai Yan: It wasn't relevant.]
[Sage of Six Paths: ...You are a very strange person.]
[Bai Yan: I make good ramen.]
[Sage of Six Paths: ...Yes. I've heard.]
Chūnin Exam Arena
Hiruzen Sarutobi, up on the observation platform, had been reading the evaluation with an expression that cycled through approximately six different emotions.
Temporal manipulation.
Foreknowledge.
Seven years in Konoha.
He thought about every time Bai Yan had served him ramen.
Every polite smile.
Every quietly refilled bowl.
He thought about how nothing catastrophic had happened to Ichiraku Ramen in seven years despite it being directly adjacent to several assassination attempts, two invasions, and one incident involving a very angry missing-nin and a broken chair.
He'd always assumed that was luck.
"...I want a detailed report on Bai Yan," he said to the ANBU beside him.
The ANBU vanished.
Came back four seconds later.
"Lord Hokage."
"Report."
"There is no file on Bai Yan."
A pause.
"...Check again."
"There is no file, Lord Hokage. He appears in the village registry as Teuchi's son-in-law. Occupation: ramen chef. Chakra level: not measured. He has never been screened."
Hiruzen pressed his fingers together.
"...Why has he never been screened?"
Another pause.
"Nobody ever thought to screen the ramen chef, Lord Hokage."
The Third Hokage closed his eyes.
Opened them.
"...Send someone to politely invite him for tea tomorrow."
"Yes, Lord Hokage."
"Very politely."
"Of course, Lord Hokage."
"He stopped time, Tenzō."
The ANBU was quiet for a beat.
"...Very, very politely, Lord Hokage."
The golden reward beam fell.
It hit Bai Yan directly.
He looked down at what appeared in his hand.
A small token.
Warm.
Settled.
Like something that had been searching for a place to rest and had finally found it.
The Observer's Anchor.
He turned it once.
He'd been in this world for seven years.
He'd always known, at the edge of his mind, that there was a mechanism that could pull him back.
The same unknown force that had brought him here.
He'd never thought about it much.
He had Ayame.
He had the shop.
He had the very good ramen.
But he'd never been certain it was permanent.
Now he was.
He closed his hand around the token.
Ayame was watching him.
"What is it?" she asked.
"It makes this permanent," he said. "Being here. It makes it so I can't be sent back."
She was quiet for a moment.
"Were you going to be sent back?"
"I didn't know."
Another moment.
"Were you worried about it?"
He thought about this honestly.
"Not as much as I should have been," he said. "I think I assumed it would work out."
She looked at him for a long time.
Then she took the chestnut bag out of his hands and put her hand in it instead.
"It worked out," she said simply.
He held her hand.
Outside, the scroll was glowing with its next entry.
The Obito sub-section was opening.
The ninja world was about to be very busy.
For right now, in row seven of the civilian section---
Bai Yan held his wife's hand and watched the world he'd known the ending of turn into something else entirely.
Something better, probably.
Something he hadn't read in any story.
He decided he was fine with that.
