Chapter 183 - The Seal Awakens! And Danzō Has a Very Bad Morning.

Chūnin Exam Arena --- Konoha

The golden beam had settled.

The warmth in Naruto's chest had faded to a low ember.

Present but quiet.

Like something waiting for a reason to move.

The arena was still buzzing from the ranking reveal.

People talking over each other.

Every village's contingent arguing about what this meant for the balance of power.

Three separate Konoha Jōnin had already started crying and were pretending they hadn't.

In the middle of all of it---

Naruto scratched the back of his head and looked at the sky.

Number one.

He'd said he'd be Hokage so many times it had become a reflex.

He said it when he was angry.

He said it when he was lonely.

He said it when nobody believed him and he needed to hear it from someone, even if that someone was himself.

He'd said it so much that somewhere along the way it had stopped feeling real and turned into armor.

But now the scroll had said it.

The ninja who decided to protect the village that abandoned him.

He pressed two fingers flat against his chest where the warmth had been.

...Yeah.

Yeah, that's what he was going to do.

He looked at the arena.

At Sakura, who was still not quite looking at him.

At Sasuke, who had been quietly staring at the ground for the last four minutes.

At Hinata, who---

Hinata was on the edge of the upper seating tier.

She'd moved there sometime during the ranking reveal, probably to give Naruto space.

She was like that.

Always somewhere slightly behind, slightly to the side, making sure she wasn't in anyone's way.

The tier was old.

The arena had taken some damage back when the scroll first appeared and the crowd surged.

The edge of the railing she was leaning against had a fracture in it that nobody had noticed yet.

Naruto noticed.

He didn't think about it.

Didn't calculate.

He just moved.

"Hinata---!"

The railing gave way.

She dropped---

And Naruto's hand caught her wrist.

He'd crossed the distance between them in something that wasn't quite speed---

more like urgency wearing speed's clothes.

He hauled her back up by the arm, stumbled, caught the railing of the lower tier with his other hand, and they both ended up sitting on the steps in an ungraceful heap.

"---oof."

A second of silence.

"...You okay?"

Hinata's face had gone from pale to a color that didn't have a name in any standard color system.

"I---yes---I'm fine---thank you, Naruto-kun---I'm sorry---"

"Why are you apologizing, the railing broke---"

"I should have been more careful---"

"The RAILING broke---"

Inside Naruto---

Something shifted.

A warmth, not from the outside this time.

From inside.

From the cage.

And in the place where the Nine-Tails Partial Harmony Seal had just settled into his chakra system---

A gate, very small, barely the width of a thread---

Opened.

It was nothing.

A trickle.

A fraction of a fraction.

But it was warm.

Not the burning, acid-red fury that Nine-Tails chakra always tasted like.

Warm.

Like something that had been clenched tight for a very long time had, just briefly, unclenched.

Naruto blinked.

He felt it.

Didn't know what it was.

Filed it away under "weird things to ask Pervy Sage about later."

"...You sure you're okay?" he asked Hinata again.

"Y---yes." She was staring at where his hand was still loosely around her wrist. "Completely fine."

He let go.

She went, if possible, even more scarlet.

Inside the Nine-Tails' Cage

The great fox sat in the dark.

The thread-width gate had opened and closed in roughly three seconds.

The Nine-Tails looked at it.

Looked away.

...That's all.

Don't read into it.

I opened for three seconds because the seal conditions were met. That's a mechanical function. That's all.

He settled back against the bars.

...Stupid brat. Catching falling girls. Dramatic.

He was completely unbothered.

He was simply commenting.

On the mechanics.

He said nothing else.

Group Chat:

[One-Tail Shukaku: Nine-Tails. NINE-TAILS. Your seal activated.]

[Nine-Tails Kurama: I'm aware.]

[One-Tail Shukaku: It activated because he caught a girl.]

[Nine-Tails Kurama: It activated because he acted to protect another person. Those were the seal conditions.]

[One-Tail Shukaku: She was blushing SO hard---]

[Nine-Tails Kurama: I was not watching.]

[One-Tail Shukaku: You were absolutely watching.]

[Nine-Tails Kurama: This conversation is over.]

Konoha --- Root Headquarters

Danzō had been having a very bad morning.

It had started out fine.

He'd woken up with plans.

He had, as of yesterday, approximately four active contingency plots involving Naruto Uzumaki, ranging from "recruit" to "neutralize."

He'd been quite pleased with himself.

Then the scroll had revealed Naruto's parentage.

And the Future Pillar Ranking had put Naruto at first place.

And the Nine-Tails Partial Harmony Seal had just activated in front of the entire ninja world.

Danzō sat at his desk and looked at his four plans.

He crossed out the first one.

Recruit: no longer viable. Yellow Flash's heir, public figure, too much scrutiny.

He crossed out the second.

Neutralize quietly: impossible. Any harm to him now would incite the entire village.

He crossed out the third.

Use as leverage against the Third: the Third is already dying in the footage. Leverage is worthless.

He looked at the fourth.

He crossed that out too.

He crossed it out twice.

Then he put down the brush and stared at the wall.

"...Fu."

That was it.

That was the whole reaction.

Just "fu."

He'd spent twelve years carefully positioning himself around the Nine-Tails jinchūriki---

building contingencies, laying groundwork, planting seeds---

And the scroll had come along in one morning and made every single one of those plans not just difficult, but stupid.

Because you couldn't scheme against someone the whole ninja world was now watching.

You couldn't quietly outmaneuver the son of the Fourth Hokage when that parentage was carved into public record.

You couldn't neutralize a boy who'd just been ranked by the scroll as the future of the shinobi era.

He was untouchable now.

Not by strength.

By visibility.

Danzō hated this feeling.

It was the same feeling he'd had when Hiruzen kept being chosen over him, again and again---

not beaten by power, but made irrelevant by circumstance.

He opened a new scroll.

Started writing fresh plans.

None of them involved Naruto Uzumaki.

For the first time in twelve years, that column in his ledger was simply empty.

Hidden Cloud Village

"Mabui."

"Yes, Lord Raikage."

"The Yellow Flash's son just activated a Nine-Tails chakra seal by catching a girl who fell off a railing."

"...That is what happened, yes."

"He didn't even think about it."

"He moved on instinct, Lord Raikage."

A was quiet for a moment.

"That's exactly what the ranking meant," he said finally.

"He doesn't protect people because he's strong. He's going to be strong because he can't stop protecting people."

Mabui looked at him.

That was unusually insightful for this hour of the morning.

"Yes, Lord Raikage."

A grunted.

Picked up his tea.

Put it back down.

"...Update the threat assessment for Konoha."

"In which direction?"

"Higher."

Pure Land

[Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze: The seal activated.]

[Uzumaki Kushina: I SAW! I SAW IT!! HE CAUGHT HER! HE CAUGHT HER WITHOUT EVEN THINKING!!]

[Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze: Kushina.]

[Uzumaki Kushina: THAT'S MY SON!! THAT'S MY SON CATCHING GIRLS LIKE A PROPER YOUNG MAN!!]

[Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze: ...That's one way to frame it.]

[Uzumaki Kushina: MINATO!! DO YOU SEE HOW KIND HE IS?! DO YOU SEE?!]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Kushina, we all see!! It's wonderful!! Just like---]

[Uzumaki Mito: Husband. Don't compare. Just agree.]

[First Hokage Hashirama Senju: Right!! Just wonderful, full stop!!]

Konoha --- Ichiraku Ramen

Teuchi watched the brief commotion in the arena from his vantage point outside the shop.

The railing.

The catch.

Naruto helping the Hyūga girl up and immediately arguing with her about whose fault it was.

He smiled.

Same as always.

He went back inside and started a fresh pot of broth.

Naruto would be hungry later.

He was always hungry after anything emotional.

That hadn't changed since he was four years old.

Konoha --- Chūnin Exam Arena

Orochimaru had watched the seal activation with the expression of a man who had just been handed a birthday present and was already planning how to take it apart.

He turned to the empty space where Kabuto was standing a discreet three steps behind him.

"That seal."

"Yes, Orochimaru-sama."

"The Nine-Tails Partial Harmony Seal. It activated on contact with a protective impulse."

"That's what it appeared to do."

"A seal that responds to intent rather than chakra input." Orochimaru's voice was very quiet and very focused. "Do you understand how unprecedented that is?"

"...Shall I take notes?"

"You'd better."

He had completely forgotten about the Konoha Crush Plan.

He'd actually forgotten about it fifteen chapters ago, but now it was truly gone.

Vaporized.

Not even a memory.

He pulled out a research journal he'd been carrying since this morning.

The first thirty pages were already full.

Kabuto watched him write.

Looked at the arena.

Looked at his master.

Came to several conclusions about how today was going to end.

"...Should I tell the Sound-nin to stand down, Orochimaru-sama?"

"Mm. Yes. Do that."

"They've been in formation for forty minutes."

"That's fine. Tell them to---" he waved a hand vaguely---"go home."

"And the invasion?"

"What invasion."

"...The Konoha Crush Plan, Orochimaru-sama. The one you spent six months---"

"Kabuto."

"Yes?"

"If I wanted to crush Konoha, I could do that any time." He didn't look up from his notes. "But this seal only exists right now, in this arena, on that boy. Priorities."

Kabuto closed his mouth.

He wrote a note of his own.

It said: Tell Tayuya to stand down. Pack up. We're going home.

He added a second note: Also possibly look for a new career.
