Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18 — “Eyes of Wolves”

-- when even wolves notice --

The moment quiet presence disturbs long-set judgement.

Kel stepped further into the Grand Lunar Hall, and though no announcement heralded him, the air shifted.

The venue stretched before him in majestic symmetry—oval in structure, with vaulted ceilings adorned by drifting silk banners of deep silver and muted black. Moonstone chandeliers drifted gently above like captured constellations, glimmering softly upon aristocratic figures scattered across the polished floor.

House banners hung against ancient stone walls, each woven with history.

● Frostborne – Silver Falcon

● Rosenfeld – Dragon coiling crown

● Wynfell – Coiling Wyrm

● Aurelius – Golden Sun

But beneath all heraldry…

Were eyes.

Not loud.

Not warm.

Sharp.

Predatory.

> A noble hall is never just a place of gathering. It is an arena of perception. <

And Kel had just stepped into the center without armor.

"Is that… the first heir?"

A woman's voice from the right.

Quiet, but curiosity-laced.

First reactions are predictive. They expected absence. My presence disrupts estimation. Observe… do not react yet.

Kel's gaze remained forward—not stiff, not submissive—simply deliberate.

He walked like a young heir should—

Elegant stride, shoulders level, posture intact. His coat glided behind him, sable-dark with threads catching the chandeliers' light like twilight passing through frost.

 Whisper Exchanges

"He attended?"

"Since when does he?"

"I heard he could barely stand without coughing."

"Look at him—too composed for the ill."

"Maybe inherited the duke's vanity." (soft chuckle)

From the left:

"He shouldn't be here. It makes guests uncomfortable."

"They say the curse weakens his bloodline. I'd keep my heirs away."

"Then why is he dressed like he intends to be seen?"

Kel did not look around.

But he listened.

Sound layers wrapped themselves across the hall—voices behind masks, interest behind disdain, amusement behind arrogance.

🐺 Kel's Analysis

Six clusters:

Merchants & opportunists — watching for leverage.

War faction nobles — unimpressed; value strength.

Capital guests — calculating political shifts.

Younger nobility — masks of superiority; texture of gossip.

Family vassals — uncertain whether to acknowledge.

Observers — the ones who speak least… but conclude most.

Of these, only two pose risk now.

He did not seek their attention.

But he did not hide either.

 A Loud Laugh

A nobleman near the wine stand lifted his goblet slightly too high.

"Well, well!" he declared lightly—not loud enough to be publicly offensive, but clearly meant to travel. "Did the winds change so strongly that even the fallen branch decided to sway tonight?"

Subtle. Plausible deniability.

Laughter fluttered around him like threads trying to bind an opinion.

Kel stopped walking.

Turned—just a slight angle of chin.

Expression neutral.

Eyes quiet.

He looked—not at the noble—but through him.

The laugh wears a mask of dismissal, but the eyes hold caution. That is not a hunter. That is someone pretending to be one.

Kel did not respond verbally.

He simply lowered his gaze slightly, as if considering…

Then turned away, refusing to grant further value.

In that moment—small, silent—

Several noticed.

It was not defiance.

Nor submission.

It was irrelevance being made reciprocal.

 Internal Voice of Another Noble

A woman watching from the edge of the hall — silver fan in hand.

"That is not how a child acts when insulted."

"That is how someone acts who no longer sees this as a room containing power."

Her lips curled faintly.

"…Intriguing."

A Figure Watching From the Balcony

Upon the second-floor inner balcony, a tall man stood among high-tier guests. He wore formal black military attire, his posture straight, his gaze unflinching.

Fourth Imperial Prince, Adrian Aurelius.

He had been silently watching since Kel entered.

He took a sip of his wine slowly.

"That one… does not look like someone nearing deterioration."

Beside him, a political advisor whispered, "The duke's eldest, sire? He is of no significance."

A pause.

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Not yet."

Final Movements — First Waves Passed

Kel walked toward the far end of the hall where the host's family would arrive.

No rush. No hesitation.

Just presence.

Some nobles turned away—losing interest.

Some kept watching—curiosity deepened.

Some scoffed—hiding discomfort.

And a select few…

Began recalculating.

Kel's Calm Retreat

He reached a quiet edge of the hall, away from the heavier clusters. A strategic position—not isolated, but not entangled.

He lifted a glass placed on a side table.

His hand held steady.

His breathing…

Controlled.

Aura—silent.

💭 Final Monologue (End Chapter)

Wolves look only for weakness. Tonight, they saw none they expected.

But a wolf pack does not strike early. It watches. Tests. Waits.

Let them.

I am not prey.

He lifted the glass slightly.

Nor am I hunter yet.

A shadow learns. A seed waits.

He sipped.

This night… I am someone they did not account for.
