Chapter 9 - The Secret Above The Clouds

The world never knew how close it came to falling.

For the people below, that night was just another strange event in a world filled with strange events.

After The Fall, humanity had become accustomed to impossible things. The sky turning unnatural colors. Cities disappearing overnight. Creatures appearing from nowhere and forcing entire nations to respond.

Fear had become normal.

The UNDF had become humanity's answer to that fear.

Whenever something appeared, they arrived.

Whenever something threatened civilization, they fought.

And whenever they finished, they told the world that everything was under control.

Most people believed them.

They needed to.

Because the truth was much worse.

The UNDF was not winning.

They were only surviving.

High above the clouds, beyond the reach of normal aircraft, Kurogami Ryumen floated in the darkness of space, his silver eyes locked onto the enormous object in front of him.

It was no longer falling.

It was simply there.

Waiting.

The massive shell that had entered Earth's atmosphere looked like a meteor from the ground, but up close, Kurogami could see the truth.

It was alive.

The surface moved slowly, almost like breathing.

Like something inside was sleeping.

Waiting for the right moment to wake up.

Kurogami's expression remained calm, but his instincts were screaming.

Something about this was wrong.

Devourers always had a presence.

A feeling.

A kind of pressure that reached the soul before the body.

They were destruction given form.

They were hunger.

They were chaos.

But this one...

This one felt different.

It wasn't acting like a beast.

It wasn't searching.

It wasn't attacking.

It was observing.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Beside him, Yuuji Kiroyu stood silently.

The Director-General of the UNDF looked almost unaffected by the impossible scene before him.

His battle suit covered his body in a layer of advanced armor that shifted constantly, adjusting itself to the environment. The Bio-Aegis system moved like a living machine, reinforcing his body and connecting directly with the weapon in his hand.

The Graviton Lance.

A weapon powerful enough to distort space itself.

The same weapon that made even high-class Devourers hesitate.

Kurogami glanced at him.

"You knew."

Yuuji didn't look at him.

"Knew what?"

"That something like this existed."

The older man remained silent.

Kurogami's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Avoid answering when the truth is inconvenient."

For a moment, Yuuji almost smiled.

Almost.

"You haven't changed."

Kurogami looked back at the creature.

"Neither have you."

The words carried years of history.

A history neither of them talked about.

The crater.

The destroyed city.

The ten-year-old boy standing alone among the remains of a battlefield.

The first time Yuuji saw what Kurogami could become.

The first time he wondered if that child was humanity's salvation...

or its next disaster.

Yuuji finally spoke.

"During the First Incursion, humanity believed Devourers were simple."

Kurogami listened.

"We thought they were like natural disasters."

The Graviton Lance hummed softly.

"Something that appeared, caused destruction, and disappeared."

His eyes hardened.

"But disasters don't learn."

Kurogami's expression changed.

"They adapted."

Yuuji nodded.

"At first, it was small."

He looked at the creature.

"They became resistant to certain weapons. They changed their behavior. They avoided traps."

A pause.

"Then they started making decisions."

The silence afterward felt heavier than before.

A thinking Devourer.

That was something humanity feared more than strength.

Power could be measured.

Power could be countered.

But intelligence?

A smart enemy could plan.

It could wait.

It could understand.

And the worst part...

It could choose.

Before Kurogami could respond, the object in front of them moved.

Both of them immediately prepared.

The shell cracked.

A deep sound traveled through space.

CRACK.

Another fracture appeared.

Then another.

The massive structure began splitting apart.

Not exploding.

Opening.

Like something inside was finally awake.

Kurogami's body tensed.

The instinct inside him reacted.

The other presence.

The beast.

The thing that had always existed within him.

It recognized something.

Danger.

The shell broke apart completely.

Pieces of black material floated into space.

And from the center...

Something emerged.

A Devourer.

But not like the others.

Its body was enormous, covered in dark armored plates that looked almost like natural weapons. Unlike the creatures Kurogami had fought before, this one didn't appear uncontrolled.

Every movement was deliberate.

Every action had purpose.

Its eyes opened.

And immediately...

It looked at Kurogami.

Not Earth.

Not Yuuji.

Him.

A strange pressure entered his mind.

For a second, the universe disappeared.

He saw flames.

A ruined city.

A younger version of himself.

A child surrounded by death.

Silver lightning.

A monster falling.

Then darkness.

Kurogami returned instantly.

His breathing changed slightly.

Yuuji noticed.

"What did it do?"

Kurogami didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't know.

The creature hadn't attacked him.

It had remembered him.

The Devourer moved closer.

Yuuji raised his weapon.

"Stay behind me."

Kurogami looked at him.

"No."

Yuuji glanced at him.

"That wasn't a suggestion."

Kurogami's eyes returned to the creature.

"Neither was mine."

For a moment, the two stood silently.

Different generations.

Different kinds of power.

But both refusing to step away from danger.

The Devourer stopped.

Its head tilted.

Almost like it was studying them.

Then it spoke.

A broken voice.

A voice that sounded like it was forcing itself to understand language.

"Awakened."

Kurogami froze.

That word.

Again.

The creature looked at him.

"Different."

Lightning sparked faintly across his fingers.

ZZZT.

The Devourer continued.

"Human."

A pause.

"Not human."

The words struck deeper than he expected.

Because that was the question he had avoided his entire life.

What was he?

A human with power?

Or something else wearing a human face?

The energy inside him reacted.

His body wanted to transform.

To answer the threat.

To release everything.

But Kurogami clenched his fist.

The sparks vanished.

No.

Not here.

Not in front of Yuuji.

Not in front of anyone.

He controlled the power.

The Devourer watched.

Then something unexpected happened.

It stepped back.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"Not ready."

Kurogami's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

The creature stared at him.

"You will become."

Then before either of them could move...

It disappeared.

Not quickly.

Not with speed.

It simply vanished.

The space where it had been became empty.

Only pieces of its shell remained.

Yuuji lowered his weapon slowly.

Neither man spoke.

Because both understood the same thing.

That creature had not come to destroy Earth.

It had come to find Kurogami.

The incident was buried before the world even knew it happened.

The UNDF controlled the information.

Satellites were adjusted.

Reports were rewritten.

The public received a simple explanation.

A meteor-like object entered Earth's atmosphere.

The UNDF investigated.

The threat was neutralized.

Nothing more.

No mention of Kurogami.

No mention of the impossible power hidden inside him.

No mention of the fact that a Devourer had looked at a human being...

and recognized something familiar.

Inside UNDF headquarters, however, the atmosphere was completely different.

A restricted meeting was held.

Only the highest-ranking officers were allowed inside.

The screen displayed the recorded footage.

The creature.

The energy readings.

And Kurogami.

Nobody spoke for a while.

Finally, one commander broke the silence.

"Director-General."

Yuuji looked at him.

"What exactly is Kurogami Ryumen?"

The room became quiet.

Everyone waited.

Because that was the question nobody wanted to ask.

Yuuji looked at the screen.

At the boy he had watched grow from a frightened child into something impossible.

Then he answered.

"Human."

The commander frowned.

"Are you certain?"

Yuuji remained silent.

And that silence was the answer.

Finally, he said:

"No."

Several officers exchanged looks.

"Then why are we allowing him to exist outside our control?"

Yuuji's expression hardened.

"Because he has protected people more times than most soldiers in this room."

The commander didn't back down.

"And if he loses control?"

A pause.

Yuuji looked at the footage.

At Kurogami standing alone.

At the boy who carried a burden nobody understood.

"Then I will stop him."

Nobody questioned whether he could.

Because everyone in that room knew.

Yuuji Kiroyu was one of the few people alive who could try.

The next morning, the world continued like nothing happened.

Students complained about exams.

Teachers gave lectures.

People went to work.

Life continued.

Because humanity rarely noticed the battles fought to protect it.

At Seiran Academy, Kurogami sat quietly near the window.

His eyes were focused outside.

But his mind was somewhere else.

The Devourer.

Its words.

Its understanding.

Something was coming.

Something connected to him.

"Kurogami."

He turned.

Kiromi was looking at him.

"You've been staring outside for a while."

"I'm thinking."

She smiled.

"That's dangerous."

He blinked.

"Why?"

"Because every time you think too much, you look like you're carrying the weight of the entire world."

For a moment, Kurogami said nothing.

Because she was right.

And that scared him.

Kiromi leaned closer.

"You know..."

She smiled softly.

"You don't always have to handle everything alone."

Those words were simple.

But to Kurogami Ryumen...

They were heavier than any battle.

Because fighting monsters was easy.

The hardest thing he had ever done...

was allowing someone to stand beside him.
