When he was in his trimester, Eugene often woke up in the middle of the night because the twins moved and kicked him from the inside. After they were born, it seemed that habit stayed.
Eden was usually the one who woke up first, whether it was from hunger or because he dirtied his diaper. He would cry and move around, startling his comparatively meeker older brother—comparatively, because Johan was no less of a loudspeaker incarnate.
Their cries in the middle of the night were even louder than their cries during the day. Eugene felt like he would be able to hear them even if he closed the bedroom door. With Hannah, Eugene left everything to Olivia, but he was sure the girl wasn't this loud. She was fussy, but her cries were mostly gentle unless she didn't feel well. Most of the time, Eugene didn't even hear her from where he slept.
Was it because there were two of them?
"Oh, they're up again?" Eugene opened his eyes, muttering dazedly as the cries, doubled, pierced the night.
