Chapter 81 - Nail polish

"Nah, I'd rather watch you struggle with those cooking tutorials you refuse to take seriously." Sanemi stretches his arm across the back of the couch, deliberately letting it rest behind Giyuu's shoulders. "Four months and you still can't boil water without making a mess. Impressive." His tone is teasing, but there's affection in his eyes as he watches Giyuu.

"Maybe we should just order takeout forever." Sanemi suddenly becomes aware of his own behavior - how he's been watching Giyuu with soft eyes, how his protective instincts flare up at the slightest hint of distress. "Tch, whatever. I'm only putting up with you because you make decent coffee." He tries to maintain his gruff exterior, but his fingers absently play with a strand of Giyuu's hair. Giyuu leans slightly into Sanemi's touch, a small smile playing on his lips at the familiar routine.

"You're a terrible liar, you know that? You practically begged me to move in with you." He glances up at Sanemi through his lashes, blue eyes sparkling with mischief. "And you keep stealing my favorite hoodies." Sanemi's cheeks flush slightly at the accusation, though he tries to hide it by looking away. "I didn't beg. I just... suggested it was a practical arrangement. And those hoodies are too big for you anyway."

He tugs playfully at the hoodie Giyuu's wearing - one of Sanemi's that Giyuu "borrowed" and never returned. "Besides, they smell like you now." Giyuu feels his face heat up at Sanemi's words, but he maintains his composure, setting his empty food container aside. "You're such a sap. What happened to the scary tutor everyone's afraid of?" He shifts closer, resting his head against Sanemi's shoulder with practiced ease. The small dorm room feels even smaller as Sanemi enters, carrying bags of food. His eyes immediately land on Giyuu's made-up face and painted nails. "What the...?" He stops in his tracks, his expression a mix of surprise and something else - possibly admiration? "Did you rob a beauty store or something?" Sanemi's eyes narrow as he takes in the full effect of Giyuu's makeup. His gaze lingers on the blue nail polish, and for a moment, he seems genuinely speechless.

"You... you look different," he manages to say, his voice slightly rougher than usual. He sets the takeout bags down on the coffee table, trying to maintain his casual demeanor but failing to hide his staring. Giyuu shifts uncomfortably under Sanemi's intense gaze, suddenly feeling self-conscious about his appearance. "Shinobu insisted. It's just... practice," he mumbles, avoiding eye contact. Sanemi moves closer, inspecting Giyuu's makeup more carefully.

"Practice for what? Some weird beauty competition?" There's a hint of jealousy in his tone that he quickly tries to mask with sarcasm. Shinobu, who's still packing her things, chimes in with a mischievous grin. "Oh, you know, just helping him look nice for his boyfriend." Sanemi's jaw tightens visibly at her words, and he shoots her a glare.

"Ha ha, very funny. Who needs help looking nice when they live with me anyway?" Shinobu smirks and heads for the door, clearly enjoying the tension. "Right, because your natural charm is definitely enough to woo someone." Sanemi bristles at her comment, but before he can respond, she's already gone.

The room falls into an awkward silence, with Sanemi still standing uncomfortably close to Giyuu, his eyes occasionally flickering to the blue nail polish. Mochi jumps onto Giyuu's lap, sensing the tension. The little dog's presence seems to break some of the awkwardness. "At least someone appreciates my efforts," Giyuu says quietly, stroking Mochi's fur. Sanemi clears his throat and moves to unpack the takeout, trying to act normal.

"Yeah, well... don't get too used to it. You look weird with makeup." Despite his harsh words, Sanemi can't help but steal another glance at Giyuu's face, his expression softening slightly. "The food's getting cold. Hurry up and eat." He pulls out containers of Giyuu's favorite dishes - specifically ordered, though he'd never admit it was on purpose. Giyuu's eyes widen slightly at the thoughtful gesture, but he keeps his expression neutral.

"Thanks," he says simply, accepting a container. "Did you get extra sauce?"

Sanemi grunts in affirmation, settling onto the couch next to Giyuu - closer than usual. "Of course I did. Don't act so surprised." The smell of food fills the small room as they begin eating in relative silence. Sanemi keeps stealing glances at Giyuu, who seems lost in thought.

"So... how was your day?" Sanemi asks gruffly, breaking the quiet. "Other than getting all dolled up, I mean." He tries to sound casual, but there's genuine curiosity in his voice. Giyuu shrugs, carefully picking at his food with his painted nails. "It was... fine. Classes were boring as usual. Shinobu dragged me to lunch and then... well, you know the rest." He gestures vaguely at his face, trying to keep the conversation light despite his racing heart.

"What about yours? Did you survive another day of being an angry tutor?" Sanemi rolls his eyes, though a small smile tugs at his lips. "Those idiots are hopeless. One kid actually asked me if water was wet." He shakes his head in disbelief, then leans back on the couch, his shoulder accidentally brushing against Giyuu's.

"But I did manage to beat my high score in that fighting game." Giyuu tenses slightly at the contact but doesn't move away, focusing intently on his food. "Congratulations. Maybe you should start charging for your gaming lessons instead of tutoring." Sanemi chuckles, the sound unusually warm and genuine.
