Chapter 23 - Extraction Attempt

The sky tore open like paper.

Red lightning burst outward as the massive fracture widened above the city. Buildings below groaned under the pressure, windows shattering across entire blocks.

Something enormous moved inside the tear.

Not a creature.

A presence.

Dominion alarms wailed through the streets.

Commander Vasquez's comm unit lit up instantly.

"Command, we have confirmation," she said sharply. "Prime-class anomaly breach above Sector D."

Static answered her.

Then a cold voice came through.

"Protocol Theta authorized."

Vasquez stiffened.

"Extraction?"

"Negative," the voice replied.

A pause.

"Acquisition."

Her eyes moved to Ghost.

The Descent

The fracture above the city pulsed violently.

Then it stepped through.

The Archon Prime didn't fall.

It arrived.

A towering figure of white armor and shifting geometric patterns materialized slowly from the tear. Its form looked almost human—but far too tall, nearly twenty feet, its limbs bending with unnatural precision.

Where a face should have been…

There was only light.

The air around it warped.

Cars lifted slightly from the street.

Rain curved away from its body.

Ghost felt the pressure instantly.

"This one's different," he muttered.

Rook nodded grimly.

"That's not a soldier."

The Archon Prime's voice echoed through the city—not through sound, but directly inside their heads.

VARIABLE DETECTED.

Its gaze locked onto Ghost.

ANCHOR CONFIRMED.

Dominion soldiers began moving quickly, surrounding the squad with tighter formation.

Kade looked around.

"Uh… why are they repositioning?"

Vasquez answered.

"Because the operation just changed."

She raised her hand.

Dominion rifles pointed at Ghost again.

Mara stepped in front of him immediately.

"Don't."

But Vasquez didn't look at her.

Her attention stayed on the Archon descending from the sky.

"Dominion Command has issued a direct order," she said.

Ghost's voice was calm.

"Let me guess."

Vasquez nodded once.

"Capture the variable."

Chaos Begins

The Archon Prime stepped forward.

The street cracked beneath its weight.

Red energy surged across the sky as smaller fracture-spawn began falling from the tear like burning debris.

Dozens of them.

The Dominion line broke instantly.

Soldiers opened fire in every direction as the creatures hit the ground and charged.

The battlefield erupted.

Ghost grabbed Mara's shoulder.

"Move!"

They dove behind an armored transport as claws and gunfire shredded the street around them.

Kade shouted over the noise.

"Are we fighting Dominion or the apocalypse?!"

"Both," Rook replied.

Hana's voice cut through the comms.

"Simon! The tear above the city is stabilizing!"

Ghost fired two quick shots, dropping a fracture-spawn climbing over the barricade.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning it's not closing!"

Above them, the Archon Prime slowly descended into the street.

Its feet touched the ground.

The moment they did—

Everything stopped.

Guns froze mid-fire.

Creatures halted mid-motion.

Even the rain hung in the air.

Ghost was the only one still moving.

He felt the fracture around him respond… bend… recognize him.

The Archon tilted its head.

VARIABLE RESISTANCE CONFIRMED.

Ghost raised his rifle.

"Yeah."

He fired.

The bullet hit the Archon's chest—

—and disintegrated into dust before touching it.

Ghost exhaled slowly.

"Figures."

The Archon lifted one hand.

Reality bent.

Ghost's rifle was ripped from his grip and slammed into a nearby wall.

He clenched his fists instead.

"You want me," he said.

The Archon stepped closer.

Each step caused the ground to ripple.

YOU ARE THE INSTABILITY.

Ghost didn't argue.

"Then take me."

Mara's voice shouted behind him.

"SIMON NO!"

Ghost ignored her.

The Archon extended its hand toward him.

Dominion soldiers began moving again as time resumed around them.

Vasquez shouted into her radio.

"NOW! TAKE HIM!"

Dominion troops rushed forward.

But they were too late.

Because Rook moved first.

He slammed his blade into the pavement beside Ghost.

The ground erupted with red energy.

The fracture answered.

Reality split open beneath them.

A new tear.

Ghost grabbed Rook's arm instinctively as the world collapsed inward.

Mara screamed his name.

"SIMON!"

Ghost met her eyes for one second.

Then the fracture swallowed them.

Silence

The tear snapped shut instantly.

The Archon Prime stood motionless in the empty street.

Dominion soldiers surrounded the spot where Ghost had been seconds earlier.

Commander Vasquez lowered her radio slowly.

"Report."

A technician ran up beside her.

"Anomaly signal just jumped locations!"

"Where?"

The man checked his tablet again.

His face went pale.

"…Everywhere."

Across the world, new fracture tears began opening.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Ghost hadn't been captured.

He had become something worse.

A moving epicenter.

High above the ruined city, the Archon Prime looked up into the red sky.

And for the first time—

The Dominion realized they were losing control of the war.
