Chapter 30 - Chapter 6: The one who wanted to save everything

The journey began well.

Elisa crossed the boundary between realities as though opening a door to the morning of a new day.

She wore the golden brooch upon her chest—not as a weapon, nor as a relic, but as a promise.

A promise that even she could not decipher.

She departed from Vellhara while everyone watched her as an emissary who would help all of creation. They all admired her. They all believed what she was doing was right.

And Elisa believed it too.

The first universe she visited was one where life had been smothered by a storm of stellar radiation. The seas had dried up, the trees had turned to ash, and the sky was the color of iron.

Elisa held the brooch in both hands.

"Give me strength," she whispered. "To restore what was lost."

The blue core at the center of the golden brooch began to glow.

Little by little, the sea returned.

Rain fell.

Seeds were reborn from the dust.

The inhabitants—pale, fearful, silent—looked at her as though she were a living miracle.

They called her their savior.

Hearing those words, Elisa felt something inside her fill. It was as though hearing them gave her life a purpose—something she had always been searching for.

She continued her odyssey.

She visited planets frozen by millennia of war and made them bloom under her guidance.

Civilizations on the brink of extinction regained their resources, their seas, and their skies.

Beings who had forgotten how to dream learned to dream once again.

The news spread, and with it, her name.

Elisa, the Bearer of Dawn.

Elisa, the Traveler of the Stars.

Elisa, the Savior.

And she believed it.

She smiled.

But deep inside...

Something had already begun to stir.

Because every time she used the brooch, echoes appeared at the edge of her vision.

Shadows of something that should not have been there.

Figures lingering at the edges of mirrors.

Whispers just behind her thoughts.

Hallucinations.

"Keep going.

You can still do more."

Elisa ignored them.

Or at least, she believed she did.

For a while.

The problem began when she reached the first unstable universe.

A place where life had no definite form, where its inhabitants were echoes, waves, white noise barely capable of becoming thoughts.

A place where gravity and light rejected one another.

There was nothing there to sustain.

The laws of logic simply did not exist.

There was nothing to improve.

Elisa stretched out her hand.

The brooch shone.

A city of pure forms rose into existence.

She was just about to smile in triumph...

When the city shattered like glass within seconds.

The beings—if they could even be called that—died simply by existing in a place that seemed to obey no logical laws.

Elisa staggered backward, trembling.

"What...? The world didn't change? But how is that possible? This is supposed to be the moment it's saved... Never mind. I'll just keep trying."

For hours, Elisa tried to create life within that universe.

She failed every time.

In one attempt, one of the beings she created screamed that simply feeling was unbearable, then begged her to kill it before disintegrating.

Elisa stood frozen.

Her hands trembled.

"I-I'm... I'm sorry. I was only trying to... help you."

A tear ran down her cheek.

"What's happening? Why can't I save this world? Why does this universe refuse to live?... Maybe... maybe there are worlds that can't be saved..."

The brooch pulsed with light.

Then a gentle voice, scarcely more than a whisper, slipped into the back of her mind.

"Don't say that. You have the power to save everything. You MUST save everything. Remember—that's what you are, isn't it? A savior. That's why you exist. Just keep going. It simply isn't enough yet. And if some worlds refuse to cooperate, then they're the problem. They simply fail to appreciate the gift and salvation you're offering them. That's exactly why they must be saved. For refusing to listen to you. You must save them from themselves."

"That's right..."

"I can do it."

"I can save every world..."

"I'm a savior."

The journeys continued.

Universe after universe.

World after world.

In some, life was possible but fragile.

In others, beautiful but unstable.

And in many, there simply was no place for humans, nor dreams, nor meaning.

They were worlds that did not want to be saved.

But Elisa persisted.

"If it exists, then it can be improved. Nothing is beyond hope."

Yet the harder she insisted, the more those places fell apart.

And the brooch...

It kept speaking to her.

"Don't stop.

Don't give up.

You can't allow anything to remain outside."

The mental strain grew worse.

Elisa stopped sleeping.

She stopped eating.

She stopped listening.

Some members of her race who accompanied her on several expeditions noticed the change, along with her growing obsession with saving certain worlds.

Isabella, seeing the exhaustion etched across Elisa's face, finally approached her.

"Elisa... are you alright? Lately you've become... different. You look exhausted, and you've pushed yourself too far with several of these worlds. I think you need to rest. You need to put the brooch down. Just for a while."

"No," Elisa answered without hesitation. "If I stop now, everything we've done will have been for nothing."

"But you're destroying some of these worlds by trying to save them," Isabella replied, her voice heavy with concern. "Wouldn't it be better to leave them alone? If some worlds are broken, maybe they should stay that way. Not everything has to be fixed. Maybe... that's simply their nature."

Elisa stared at her with empty eyes.

"No," she answered, without even turning to face her. "If a place is broken, then it has to be repaired. I can't leave them like that... I can't."

Isabella continued.

"Even if repairing them destroys them?"

Elisa gripped the brooch tightly.

"If they're destroyed in the process... then they weren't worth saving. If they break while I'm trying to save them... then they were never meant to exist."

The experiments continued.

She tried reinforcing unstable universes with fragments from stable ones.

She tried mixing incompatible laws of logic.

She tried forcing existence where no foundation existed.

The results were monstrous.

Entire worlds began forming in unnatural ways.

Skies filled with stars that incinerated planets.

Mountains that pulsed like lungs.

Winds that screamed.

And still Elisa whispered,

"It's for their own good... for their own good... But then... WHY ISN'T ANYTHING GETTING BETTER?! I just want everything to become better! What do I have to do to make that happen?!"

The voices became clearer.

"Things only improve because you're the one who improves them. If something exists without you, it never changes. You're the one making the difference. You're the one saving everyone.

That's why you can't allow anything to exist outside of you.

Everything must become one.

One with you."

By this point, Elisa could no longer tell when the whispers came from the brooch...

...and when they came from herself.

At last, she reached a conclusion.

Not every universe could sustain life.

But if they were united...

If they all became the same...

If every law blended together...

If every reality were compressed into one...

Then there would be nothing left to save.

Because everything would already be the same.

Elisa smiled.

"Of course... that's it.

I don't have to save them one by one.

I have to unite them.

Unify them.

As though they were a single existence.

A single life.

A single story.

That's what I have to do."

Elisa knew that what she was about to do could endanger everything.

Yet she could not stop justifying it to herself, telling herself that she had to take the risk to achieve her goal—that even if there were dangers, it would all be for a greater good.

"I will save them.

All of them.

At any cost."

The brooch shone like a sun being torn apart.

The voices spoke in unison.

"At last... you understand."

Elisa raised her hand toward the fabric of the entire multiverse.

Her voice was calm.

Gentle.

Almost sweet.

"I will save them.

I'll save them all.

Every single one of them.

Even those who don't want to be saved."

The brooch pulsed once more.

Reality began to converge.

The universes started to tremble.

To twist.

To merge.

Living beings screamed without knowing why.

The skies changed color.

Entire worlds dissolved into transparent light.

Everything.

To become one.

To become "better."

To become "perfect."

To become "saved."

Even though, deep down...

Elisa could not even save herself.
