Chapter 49 - “Disperse. That man is not coming home tonight.”

Knights of Favonius Headquarters.

Jean sat with her arms resting lightly atop her desk, listening as Eula finished reporting what she had learned about Schubert.

The information itself did not shock Jean — only that someone in Mondstadt was foolish enough to try selling out the city.

Still — the situation was manageable.

The intelligence came directly from Su Xuan, not from the diary.

So the information could be shared openly.

And since they now knew Schubert would likely collude with the Fatui, all they needed was surveillance — and to seize him the moment he acted.

"Then let me and Amber take turns watching him."

Eula volunteered without hesitation.

Jean nodded with full trust.

"I'll leave it in your hands."

She never doubted Eula.

Even if the traitor was her own uncle, Eula would not shield him — and Jean knew it.

What Jean did pay attention to, however, was something else:

Eula now carried a very familiar aura.

The same faint, lingering warmth that Jean herself had only recently gained.

She didn't mention it aloud.

But she understood.

She, Lisa, and Eula now… shared a quiet, unspoken bond.

Sisters — in the most irreversible sense.

"The Fatui truly don't give up, do they?"

Eula sighed.

"They must have told him they'd 'restore the Lawrence family's glory.'

My uncle is a complete idiot.

He never stopped to think about whether the Fatui has ever kept a promise in their entire miserable existence."

Jean and Lisa looked at her.

There was silence.

Then—

"Pfft—"

Lisa couldn't hold her laughter.

"So it is because Su Xuan told you, mm?

Look how eager you are to perform in front of him."

Eula: "…What?"

She genuinely didn't follow.

"This has nothing to do with Su Xuan.

This is about Mondstadt's safety."

Lisa smiled, eyes half-lidded and far too knowing.

"Oh, really?

And here I recall a certain Acting Grand Master refusing the citizens' request for Knights to help with rebuilding—

because someone said 'Freedom means doing things with your own hands,' and someone else took that to heart."

Jean instantly flushed.

"Lisa!"

Eula's jaw dropped.

Jean?

Jean??

Doing something simply because Su Xuan said so?

The world truly was changing.

A few minutes later—

"He said he's been staying at your place,"

Eula asked cautiously,

"Is there still room if I… move in?"

Lisa let out a sigh full of dramatic pity:

"Tragically, my dear… a few rooms exploded last night.

No space left at all."

Eula: "???"

Jean blinked.

"Exploded? I never heard any—"

Lisa quickly cut her off.

And then—

Footsteps. Fast. Urgent.

Amber burst through the office door.

"Captain Jean! Something big happened!"

Jean straightened immediately.

"Calm down, Amber. What is it?"

Amber took a breath.

"A tall woman led Su Xuan into the Goethe Hotel."

Jean froze.

The Goethe Hotel was the Fatui's embassy — completely under their control.

No one else went in unless invited.

Meaning—

Su Xuan was meeting the Fatui.

"A tall woman?" Jean asked.

"Describe her."

Amber didn't even need to think — the description came clean and precise.

Jean and Lisa exchanged a glance.

Lisa nodded.

Jean exhaled slowly.

"That woman was the 8th of the Fatui Harbingers: La Signora."

Eula and Amber both stiffened.

"The Fatui Harbinger… came to Su Xuan?"

Eula whispered.

Lisa spoke calmly:

"It's about the Gnosis.

Su Xuan mentioned in the diary that Barbatos gave it to him.

And that he was planning to sell it to the Fatui after using it to climb the highest peak.

Naturally, the Harbinger would come straight to him."

Eula blinked.

"But… that was only written in the diary. How did—"

She stopped.

Silence.

Understanding clicked.

Lisa folded her fan, sighing dramatically:

"…Yes. She's one of us. A diary holder."

Then — with the same resigned tone one uses when blowing out a candle at the end of a long night:

"Alright, everyone. That's enough for today.

Go home."

"Su Xuan is… not coming back tonight."
