Chapter 73 - Chapter 72: Who Killed Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore fell into deep thought.

He firmly believed that the Tom from the past would never have said that pure-blood ideology was not necessarily correct.

Tom had been too extreme.

Too stubborn.

The kind of person who would never turn back until he had completely failed.

So what caused this change?

Was it the cloak?

That seemed to be the only explanation.

Tom Gaunt simply smiled faintly as Dumbledore pondered.

Although their exchange felt long, it had only taken a few seconds.

Tom lowered his head and looked at the parchment again.

A new question had appeared.

The moment he saw it, his expression changed.

His eyes widened.

His breathing grew heavy.

That reaction immediately caught Dumbledore's attention.

Tonight was destined to be the night he thought the most.

Because the person before him was different, he had to think more carefully than ever.

Tom's unusual reaction made him curious.

At first, Dumbledore thought Tom was resisting the influence of the cloak.

But then he realized the reaction was directed at the parchment.

Tom raised his head and looked at him with a strange expression, one that carried both surprise and understanding.

"It's a new question," Tom said.

Dumbledore lowered his gaze.

After reading it, he froze for a moment, then let out a soft laugh and said, "Interesting, very interesting."

Tom's expression grew more complicated as he watched him.

"I thought I would feel relieved when you died, Professor, but now that I know it happens, I feel something I cannot describe, perhaps because the connection between us is too deep, whether it is hatred or something else, no one can truly say."

"If you had not brought me into the wizarding world, I might have become something abnormal, but if you had not been so strict and distrustful, perhaps I would not have become what I am either."

"So who was wrong, you or me, perhaps neither of us can answer that anymore, perhaps we were both wrong, Professor."

Tom looked at Dumbledore's aged face, lost in thought.

Dumbledore, however, continued smiling, even to the point that tears formed in the corners of his eyes.

To him, death was simply another journey.

"Please listen carefully. By whose hand did Albus Dumbledore die?"

"A. Severus Snape."

"B. Lord Voldemort."

"C. Harry Potter."

"D. Draco Malfoy."

At that moment, everyone outside was stunned.

The professors and students stared at the question in disbelief.

Could Dumbledore die?

They had never considered it.

To them, Dumbledore was a pillar.

As long as he existed, everything felt stable.

But what if he was gone?

The thought alone created unease.

With Voldemort destined to return and Dumbledore possibly dying, what would happen next?

Even if nothing had happened yet, the question itself planted fear.

"Will it be you, Tom?" Dumbledore asked as he wiped the tears from his eyes, his gaze shifting between Tom and the parchment.

Logically, Voldemort seemed the most likely answer.

Even the others outside thought so.

But Dumbledore saw it differently.

He understood Tom too well.

Tom feared him.

Unless absolutely necessary, he would not face him directly.

So who would it be?

Severus Snape.

Harry Potter.

Or Draco Malfoy.

Harry trusted him deeply, and that trust would likely continue, so it was unlikely to be him.

If Harry was involved, it would only be indirectly.

"Professor Dumbledore… will he really die?" Cedric asked.

"I don't know," Lockhart replied, shaking his head.

He truly did not know.

If Dumbledore's death was inevitable, then preparations had to be made.

Everyone present had reached the same conclusion.

Seeing Voldemort among the options, they were almost certain he was the answer.

"Do not assume that," Snape said coldly, his voice cutting through the tension.

"Now that we know this, the future is no longer fixed, we can change it by identifying the warning signs and removing the danger before it happens."

For once, his tone carried authority rather than hostility.

He felt reliable.

"Then Professor, who do you think killed Professor Dumbledore?" Cedric asked.

Snape turned and looked at the parchment.

When he saw his own name among the options, he fell silent.

"I don't know either," he said.

He no longer dared to assume the obvious answer.

The system often revealed unexpected truths.

And this time, he had a feeling.

The one who killed Dumbledore might be him.
