Emily woke up to the sound of birds singing softly outside the windows. She had never slept so peacefully after that incident, heading to the bathroom to wash her face and brush her teeth, getting ready to head out until a knock came at the door.
"Maybe he's a gentleman after all." She thought and told the person to come in, but to her surprise, it wasn't Alex, instead it was a petite lady in a maid outfit.
Emily can't remember meeting a maid last night, "Where is your boss?" She asked the lady, smiling.
"He left for the office this morning." The maid replied. "He instructed me to get you prepared to meet his mother tonight."
Emily was shocked. "Why the rush? It's still morning. Do I need to get prepared now?"
Mia stood there with a confused look and explained, "Ma'am, it's already afternoon. We need to select an elegant dress for you, get your nails and style your hair before tonight."
Emily glancing at the time, it was already noon. No wonder she felt so refreshed, having slept for so long. "Okay," she murmured, getting out of bed, letting Mia do her work .
It took hours for Emily to get ready, trying one dress after another, she sighed. What's the point of all these if she can't meet her naturally.
"What do you think about your new look?" Mia asked, smiling..
Emily faced the mirror, she couldn't recognize herself. It reminded her of her past. She hated curly hair. "I love it," Emily half smiled, so she won't go through the stress of changing hairstyle again.
"Okay, the driver will be here in ten minutes." Mia said, feeling proud of her work, then she went downstairs.
Emily still had time to redo my makeup quickly, before someone would recognize her.
As Emily walked into the restaurant the building was sleek and modern. The design inside was simple but elegant. She was shown to the reserved table, where she saw a woman with grey hair staring at her but Alex was nowhere to be seen.
"Good day ma," Emily smiled, extending her hand for a handshake.
Mrs. Stone left Emily's hand hanging in the air, giving her a warning look and said, "You must be the lady my son married. Sit down while we wait for him."
Emily became uncomfortable with her gaze just then she heard a deep voice behind her. "Sorry I am late," Alex said, as he slid into the chair beside Emily, "Traffic….."
Emily was thankful he arrived just in time, then turned to smile at him. Emily glanced at the woman across, and saw she was now smiling at Alex, and her eyes held a deep affection for him.
Mrs Stone kept asking Emily questions about Alex which she surprisingly answered well through guessing, until Emily heard what made her drop her cutlery.
"You look familiar, have we met somewhere before?" Mrs. Stone asked, with eager eyes.
Emily coughed, " You must have mistaken me for someone else," She replied, with a fake smile.
When they got home Emily didn't wait for Alex to park his car, she ran to the room then prepared to sleep.
Since Emily had no work and was debt free she visited Sophia at her work place often. "Take a drink, but don't get drunk," Sophia said.
"I heard you are married, You moved on too fast." An unknown message appeared on Emily's phone screen. She quickly looked around to see if the person that sent it was looking at her but she saw no one, everyone was having fun.
"Who are you?" She replied back. But she got no reply.
Emily stared at her phone for an hour, lost in thought. She told Sophia that she was going home, as Sophia attended to other people at the bar.
As Emily was about heading out she caught a glimpse of someone smirking at her. Unable to shake the feeling, she looked in that direction again but there was nobody there. Was she hallucinating?
.....
Emily returned home with a concerned look only to see Alex relaxed on the couch with a document in his hands. He had been busy after meeting his parents.
"You are back early," Alex said, still focused on the document.
Emily raised an eyebrow as if she had ever come back home late. She asked back with a cold look, "I should be the one asking you,"
Impressed by her boldness Alex walked towards her with a smile, meeting her gaze. "I did not marry you to be jobless, you will follow me to the company tomorrow."
Her expression changed. "I don't know if I am qualified to work in your company." she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alex raised an eyebrow, surprised by her hesitation. "I am not asking for your opinion, you're my wife, and you'll do what's best for this family."
Emily's eyes flashed with anger, trying to hold herself. "Fine," she said, her voice dripping with resentment. "I'll go with you tomorrow."
Alex nodded, feeling a sense of satisfaction. But as he turned to leave, he caught a glimpse of something in Emily's eyes. Something that looked almost like...
