Chapter 6 - A superior subordinate

CHAPTER 6

"She got away. She had help." Orion was deadpan as she said it.

But she took the Bluetooth earpiece out in anticipation of the reaction from the other side of the line.

Sure enough a high pitched roar could be clearly heard from a meter away.

"How could you let her get away?"

Orion was very familiar with this type of person. They try to make their problems, your problems. They were trying to put Orion on the defensive. They would not succeed.

Orion wasn't biting.

"You hired me to track and locate the target; which, I did. Instead of paying me my fee, you than enlisted my help in eliminating the target, holding my wages as ransom to do so."

Orion was more than done with this client arrogance and entitlement. She did not let it come through in her tone. Her words should get her point across.

Apparently they didn't do their job.

"I am paying you to do a job you,

apparently, aren't capable of doing. If you can't do it, tell me now, and I will hire someone more competent."

Orion sighed exasperatedly to herself. She should never have taken this job.

"As I just mentioned, you haven't paid me for what you original contracted me to do. I did my job. I won't charge for the failed elimination."

Orion lowered her tone to a lower register that was a more menacing tone, to get the next thing she said through to this thick headed customer.

"But you will pay me. Than you will loose my number. And you will be thankful I don't blacklist from ever using Dragon Clan again."

They must know she had the authority to do so.

Getting on the wrong side of a member of Dragon Clan could be the last thing you ever do.

Suddenly there was nothing but acquiescence coming from the other side of the line.

Much better.

She heard the jingle coming from the payment hitting her account. She nodded her head in acknowledgment even if the other person couldn't see her.

"I appreciate the support, have a nice day."

With that she decisively ended the call.

'Actually….I think I will blacklist them anyways.' She thought to herself. She won't inflict such a person on any of her people.

She took a moment to appreciate the competence of her opponent in this case. There were not many that could out maneuver her. She nodded in acknowledgment to their expertise.

Perhaps someone that she could enlist to her side. She would have to do some recognizance.

With that, she swiftly packed up her high powered rifle and disappeared from the area as if she was never there in the first place.

One week later

This place was crazy. I had been here a week and I still can't wrap my head around it.

I had wanted to be immediately taken home. I was worried about my families safety.

Li seemed so sure they would not be in any danger. I had asked him how he could know that.

His answer was far too reasonable.

"The fact that your enemy wanted this done quietly and out of Country makes me think, no makes me know that they won't do a thing to your family."

No, she had been the sole target and bringing her family into it put a target on her enemies back. They wouldn't risk that.

Instead he had brought me here. To the largest unground cave system I had ever seen. Located smack dab in the middle of America. The Arizona state to be exact.

I was told it was, in fact, not the largest, but they could have fooled me.

Even stranger was the people assembled here. It may sound really weird to say this, but it kind of reminded me of Empire strikes back on the planet Hoth. Except for the snow and ice.

My meaning was, it reminded me of a rebel base.

People coming and going, in military uniformed formation. They all knew where they were supposed to be, unlike me.

I had simple followed Li wherever he led me.

Which was to another man. The man in charge, if I was reading things accurately. And I had be correct.

His name was simply John. No title, no

He welcomed me, and designated me an assigned area to call my own, while I was here. But no one has told me how long that would be.

It's been a week and I'm still here.
