Chapter 6 — First Rivalry
The next morning, sunlight spilled across the Hero Academy's training grounds, illuminating the courtyard with a soft golden glow. Aiden stretched, feeling the soreness in his arms from yesterday's practice. He had barely slept, replaying the fusion exercises over and over in his mind.
"Morning, Aiden!" a cheerful voice called.
He turned to see Marina approaching, her aquamarine eyes sparkling with energy. "Ready to start today's training?" she asked, tossing a small water orb between her hands.
"Yeah… I think I'm ready," he replied, trying to sound confident.
Before they could step into the training arena, a loud voice cut through the courtyard.
"Well, well… if it isn't the commoner who broke the Resonance Crystal yesterday," said a tall red-haired boy with a smug grin — the same one from Chapter 4. His fire aura flickered around him, catching the sunlight. "I thought I told you to stay out of the nobles' way."
Aiden's pulse quickened. So this is my first real rival.
"Name's Kael," the boy continued, stepping forward. "And today, I'm going to teach you why commoners shouldn't pretend to belong here."

Aiden swallowed and focused. Seven elements… I can do this.
Kael lunged first, flames coiling around his fist. Aiden dodged instinctively, rolling to the side. Sparks flew as Kael struck the stone training floor.

Aiden concentrated. Kael's attacks were purely Fire. His first instinct was to summon Water. A thin stream shot from his palm, forming a misty barrier that scattered the incoming flames.

Kael's grin faltered slightly. "Interesting… a defensive approach."

Kael stumbled back, eyes widening. "What… what kind of trick is that?"
Aiden's chest heaved as he prepared another strike. Maybe Fire + Earth… He had never tested so many combinations before. The System glimmered with faint pulses of light as it calculated his abilities and mana expenditure.
The fight drew a small crowd. Students whispered in astonishment.
"Did he just… combine elements?"
"No noble can do that!"
"Commoner… Omni Resonance?"
Kael roared and unleashed a massive Fire Blast. Aiden barely reacted in time, fusing Water + Wind into a blinding steam cloud. The attack collided, sending both of them staggering.

Sweat dripped down Aiden's face. He inhaled sharply and launched Steam Vortex, spiraling around Kael and knocking him off his feet.
The courtyard erupted in applause. Kael, flushed with anger and embarrassment, scrambled to his feet.
"This isn't over, commoner!" he spat, fire crackling around him. "Mark my words — I'll make you regret today."
Aiden stood tall, chest heaving. "Bring it on," he said quietly.
Marina approached, smiling. "That was amazing, Aiden. I've never seen someone handle multi-element fusion in a real duel like that."
Aiden shook his head. "I barely know what I'm doing. I just… reacted."
The System pinged.

Aiden glanced at her, feeling something unfamiliar stirring — admiration, curiosity, and maybe the faintest spark of affection. But there was no time to dwell on that.
The Academy had rules, rivalries, and dangers. And if Kael was just the first, there would be many more challenges ahead.
"System," Aiden whispered, flexing his hands as sparks of elemental energy danced across his palms.
"Let's get stronger. Faster. Better."
Above them, the sun dipped low, casting long shadows across the courtyard. And somewhere, in the distant spires of the Academy, destiny watched with silent anticipation.
