Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

After absorbing the memories, Shen Meng remained silent for a long time. She no longer heard the original owner's mother's gasps, assuming she had fallen asleep.

A short while later, Shen Fugui entered with an old man. Upon seeing this, Wang Guizhi quickly offered her seat.

"Please take a look, Xiao Meng woke up briefly and then immediately fainted. Heavens above, if anything happens to my daughter, I won't live anymore!" Wang Guizhi sobbed.

"Look at you, why are you crying again? The doctor is here, don't worry, don't worry!"

Lu Changhong was from Lu Family Village, and he was the only barefoot doctor in the surrounding villages. Because he had served in the army, everyone trusted him.

He walked to the edge of the kang (heated brick bed) and was about to pry open Shen Meng's eyelids when the person who had just been frowning suddenly opened her eyes. Even someone accustomed to big scenes was startled by her.

He coughed lightly, then looked at the wound on her head. It was covered in cobwebs and soot, but the bleeding had stopped—a rural folk remedy, effective but unhygienic. He brought over the saline solution he had brought, and had Wang Guizhi hold Shen Meng's head close to the edge of the kang (heated brick bed). He then poured some saline solution into a wad of cotton cloth.

Shen Meng weakly looked at the doctor Shen Fugui had called. He was about to clean her wound without even applying anesthesia, which startled her, and she raised her hand to stop him.

  "Ah~ Ugh!"

  This feeling is so intense!!!

Shen Meng suddenly grabbed Wang Guizhi's arm, trembling with pain. She had almost knocked Wang Guizhi to the ground.

"Ouch, Doctor Lu, why didn't you tell me? I almost held her down."

"I couldn't tell, Auntie. If I did, she would know, and she would run away when I tried to hold her down."

  Shen Meng: "."

That sounded like it made sense.

After cleaning the wound, Lu Changhong applied medicine and bandaged it with gauze. The wound was on the temple, and he prescribed some anti-inflammatory medicine. He was a doctor recognized by the commune and could get some medicine from the county hospital, but not much. He always prescribed very little, but this time he prescribed six pills for Shen Meng, out of respect for his brother Lu Zhenping.

"It's nothing serious. The wound looks scary, but no bone is broken. Just let it rest for ten days to two weeks. Take one pill here and another before bed. Be careful at night, don't get a fever. If you do, bring it down quickly. If it doesn't go down, call me."

"Okay, okay, thank you so much, Dr. Lu. I'm so grateful to you today. How much does it cost? I'll pay for it."

Shen Fugui watched him pack his things, then patted himself down. He and his wife had rushed out without taking anything with them. Not only that, but hearing that his daughter was alright, he breathed a sigh of relief, but at the same time, he felt incredibly hungry.

Looking at Shen Fugui, Lu Changhong lowered his eyelids slightly.

"It's seven mao in total. The expensive part is the saline solution for washing the wound, and the cost of the medicine powder and pills. It's okay if you don't have them now; you can pay for

them later." Wang Guizhi and Shen Fugui were about to thank him when Shen Meng quickly said, "Wait, wait a minute, Mom, open my kang cabinet. There's some loose change in that black cloth bag inside. Please give it to Doctor Lu for me."

Seeing her say that, Lu Changhong didn't refuse. Lu Zhenping was such a good man, yet he married such a two-faced woman. If she were just beautiful, it wouldn't be so bad, but she also treated the children poorly. If it weren't for him and a few other women in the village watching over them, the children would have been bullied to death.

After getting the money, Lu Changhong decisively left, not even glancing at Shen Meng. Shen Meng knew he had a grudge against the original owner of this body because Lu Zhenping's three children were actually the descendants of martyrs. Their mothers had either run away, remarried, or died, and they had lived pitiful lives in their original homes. Lu Zhenping

couldn't bear to see them suffer, so he adopted them, only to find himself sending them from one hell to another.

"Dr. Lu, wait a moment, Dr. Lu, please tell me that my injury is very serious and I won't be able to get out of bed for at least six months if my mother-in-law asks about my condition. Thank you."

  Lu Changhong: "..."

He knew it. This woman was trying to use this injury to shirk her responsibilities. Who knows how she'll make the children work for her like slaves later!

"Zhenping's wife, I shouldn't interfere in your family's affairs, but Zhenping and I grew up together, and Mingyang and the other children are also pitiful. Can you please be kind to them?" At least stop hitting them.

Lu Changhong didn't dare say anything more. He was afraid of angering Shen Meng and causing her to abuse the children behind his back. After all, Shen Meng was the mother of the children now, and he, an outsider, couldn't interfere too much.

"Dr. Lu, I'll call you Brother Changhong. Don't worry, after this ordeal, I've thought things through. From now on, I promise I'll treat Mingyang and the other children well. I guarantee it. If you don't believe me, you can, you can keep an eye on me." Shen Meng's head still ached, and after saying this, a thin layer of sweat appeared on her forehead.

Lu Changhong stared at Shen Meng for a moment. He didn't know why, but before, a glance from her would have told him she was full of tricks. Today, she seemed very different.

He didn't say whether he believed her or not, but simply turned and walked out.

After going outside, he saw Liu Sanjin being supported by Zhou Jiaojiao, clearly waiting for him.

Liu Sanjin asked with a mixture of anxiety and concern, "Changhong, how is the eldest daughter's health?"

Lu Changhong was about to say it wasn't anything serious when he suddenly remembered Shen Meng's plea. For the sake of the poor children, he decided to trust her one more time.

"Auntie, Zhenping's wife isn't doing well. If I hadn't come in time, she would have almost died. I cleaned her wounds and got some medicine. Whether she lives or dies depends on her fate, but even if she's alright, she'll be bedridden for a year or two. You should prepare for the worst!"

He finished speaking, picked up his things, and walked out. Liu Sanjin and Zhou Jiaojiao, who were behind him, immediately turned pale. When Shen Meng was brought back earlier, they had played the good guys, saying that Shen Meng was fine, just unconscious, and would wake up soon.

If Shen Meng really died, all the neighbors would know that they hadn't called a doctor. Wouldn't that make them look like they deliberately refused to treat their daughter-in-law, causing her death? How could they hold their heads

up in Lujia Village after that!

Liu Sanjin grabbed Zhou Jiaojiao, who was supporting him, and scolded her sharply.

"You shallow-minded little hussy, you damned bitch, didn't you say everything was fine? My Lu family's reputation is going to be ruined by you. I'll have my son divorce you."
