Chapter 67 The Masked Savior
The silence in the dungeon was broken by a soft unnatural sound like silk rustling over stone but there was no silk From the deepest corner where shadows seemed to gather into a solid mass a figure emerged He moved without a sound a living patch of darkness detaching itself from the wall
Agni and Neer tensed pushing themselves up from the cold floor Before them stood a man of average height wrapped in a dark hooded cloak His face was completely hidden by a mask It wasnt a simple covering it was a work of eerie art carved from a dark polished wood or lacquered stone etched with swirling unfamiliar symbols that seemed to shift in the weak torchlight Where eyes should be there were only two deep empty indigo hollows that held no reflection
Agni stepped forward his body aching but his voice firm Who are you Show your face What have you done to the guards
The masked man didnt speak He simply raised a gloved hand palm out towards the two guards snoring by the door The guards didnt collapse they slumped their deep sleep deepening instantly into something utterly motionless and silent as if sleep itself had punched them
Neers eyes widened This wasnt magic he recognized It was a void an absence of wakefulness He exchanged a sharp glance with Agni This is no ordinary man His power is different
The masked man finally spoke His voice was calm measured and seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere slightly muffled by the mask I am here to grant you freedom Do not linger Time is a thread and yours is fraying
He turned to the heavy iron door There was no key no lock picking He placed his fingertips lightly on the cold metal For a moment nothing happened Then a series of sharp CRACKs echoed not from the lock but from the metal itself The thick iron bars securing the door groaned then twisted and bent inward as if squeezed by a giants fist creating a gap wide enough to pass through The door creaked open not from a broken hinge but because its frame was now misshapen
Agni and Neer hesitated for only a second The choice was between a known enemys prison and an unknown saviors path They followed
The masked man led them not through the palace halls but through a network of forgotten servant passages and crumbling underground tunnels that smelled of damp earth and old stone He moved with unerring certainty a ghost guiding them through the belly of the fortress Finally they pushed through a curtain of thick roots and emerged into a dense moonlit forest After another hour of silent travel they arrived at a small well hidden hut nestled between two large boulders almost invisible beneath a canopy of ancient trees
Inside a small fire crackled in a hearth The masked man gestured for them to sit on rough hewn stools He stood by the fire the flickering light making the carvings on his mask dance
Akshay is my enemy he stated plainly He has taken from me things more precious than a throne And since he is your enemy as well that makes us allies A triangle of opposition against a common point That is why I pulled you from his grasp
Agni rubbing his sore wrists studied the masked figure We dont know you Why should we trust you This could be another of Akshays tricks
In response the masked man reached into his cloak and pulled out a small crystal vial It was filled with a luminescent blue liquid that pulsed with a soft inner light like captured moonlight He handed it to Neer For your wounds Drink
Neer uncorked it cautiously The liquid had no smell He took a small sip A wave of cool tingling warmth spread from his throat through his entire body He watched in disbelief as the dark bruises on his arms faded from purple to yellow to gone in the span of a few breaths The deep ache in his muscles melted away Wordlessly eyes wide he handed the vial to Agni
Agni took it and poured a few drops onto the raw welts on his back from the whipping The sensation was immediate a intense coolness followed by a rapid knitting and itching He craned his neck to see and Neer confirmed with a nod the wounds were sealing over leaving only faint pink lines
This is impossible Agni breathed Are you a healer A Gyaan Margi (wise sage keeper of sacred knowledge and spiritual wisdom)
I am a student of balance the masked man replied taking the empty vial back That elixir is the essence of a rare moon bloom accelerated by will It does not heal with magic but encourages the body to heal itself at an incredible rate A temporary measure
Temporary Neer asked
Your true injuries are not of the flesh the masked man said his hollow gaze shifting between them Akshay and the one he serves have taken something more vital from you Your connection to your birthright Your elemental powers
The air left the hut Agnis hand instinctively went to his chest where his fire once roiled Neer felt the hollow silence where the whisper of water should be
How do you know this Agni demanded his voice low
Because I watched it happen the masked man said He walked to the small window looking out at the dark forest I have watched over the Tapobhumi and its chosen heirs for a long time From the shadows The one Akshay serves the entity you call the Dark Shade it did not just attack your school It performed a ritual of severing It stole the source of your flames Agni and the core of your tides Neer It did not destroy them It contained them
Neer stood up a cold clarity dawning on him The divine bow during the attack It wasnt just a weapon they wanted It was a key And it needed our combined power to work They stole our power to make the key useless to stop us from ever using it against them
The masked man nodded slowly the motion barely perceptible You begin to see
Agnis mind raced Who are you Truly Youre no mere wanderer
For a long moment the only sound was the crackling fire Then the masked man spoke his voice softer You may call me the Masked One My true name is buried with my past It is safer for you and for me that it remains so Know only that my purpose is to restore balance Your powers are part of that balance Akshay and the Dark Shade are the tipping scales
He turned to face them fully Your journey to the Convergence of Five Elements is not just a quest to regain your strength It is the only way to draw out the Dark Shade It feeds on those elemental energies It will come to you there to feast on what you hope to reclaim That is when it will be vulnerable That is when it can be defeated
Agni looked at Neer The old tension was still there the history of blood and fire between them But it was now overshadowed by a new shared understanding They were both empty They were both targets And they had just been offered a path by a stranger in a mask
We have no powers to fight with Neer said stating the obvious
You have your minds the Masked One replied You have your training You have your knowledge of each others strengths and weaknesses even if the strengths are now latent And you have me I will not fight your battles But I will guide you to the battlefield I will give you the tools to unlock what was stolen
He picked up a stick and drew in the dirt floor by the hearth The Convergence is three weeks journey to the north through treacherous lands We leave at first light Sleep now Your bodies are healed but your spirits need rest The real fight begins tomorrow
He moved to the far corner of the hut sat down and became utterly still blending back into the shadow Agni and Neer were left by the dying fire two princes stripped of their kingdoms and their magic with only a mysterious guide and a desperate gamble for a future
They didnt speak But for the first time since the dungeon the silence between them wasnt filled with the ghosts of the past It was filled with the uncertain dangerous possibilities of the path ahead
