Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Crestwood Academy

I stood in my room, surrounded by boxes and the remnants of a life I was desperate to leave behind. The walls, once adorned with posters of tech icons and coding languages, felt like they were closing in on me. I took a deep breath, trying to quell the anxiety that twisted in my stomach. Today was the day I would leave my aunt Margot's cold house and step into the unknown—Crestwood Academy.

As I folded my clothes, I couldn't help but think about how different this year would be—no more whispers behind my back, no more being the target of cruel jokes. I was determined to reinvent myself, to be more than just the girl who had lost everything. I was going to be Elaine White, hacker extraordinaire.

I packed my laptop carefully, the one thing that had always been my refuge. Coding had become my voice, a way to express the chaos that swirled inside me. I had spent countless nights learning the ins and outs of hacking, not as a rebellion but as a means of control. It was my way of making sense of a world that had taken so much from me.

"Elaine, are you ready?" Margot's voice cut through my thoughts, sharp and impatient. I glanced at the clock—time was slipping away. I shoved a few more books into my bag, the weight of them a comforting reminder of the knowledge I craved.

"Almost," I called back, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach my eyes. I could feel her disapproval even from the other room. To her, I was just an obligation, a burden she had to bear. But today, I was determined to break free from her shadow.

As I zipped up my bag, I felt a mix of excitement and dread. What would Crestwood be like? Would I finally find a place where I belonged? I had heard whispers of the elite students who roamed the halls, their confidence radiating like a beacon. I hoped to blend in, to be more than just the girl who had lost her mother in a tragic act of violence.

The car ride to the school was silent, the tension thick between us. Margot's eyes were fixed on the road, her expression unreadable. I stared out the window, watching the world blur by, each passing tree a reminder of the life I was leaving behind.

When we finally arrived, the sprawling campus of Crestwood Academy loomed before me, a mix of grandeur and intimidation. I stepped out of the car, my heart racing as I took in the sight of the ivy-clad buildings and manicured lawns. This was it—my chance to start over.

"Don't embarrass me," Margot said, her voice cold as she handed me my bags. I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. I was used to her lack of warmth, but it still stung.

As I walked toward the entrance, I felt the weight of the past lift slightly.

With my bags in hand, I stepped through the grand entrance of Crestwood Academy, the polished floors gleaming under the soft glow of chandeliers. The air was thick with the scent of old books and fresh paint, a strange mix of history and new beginnings. I took a moment to absorb my surroundings, feeling both exhilarated and overwhelmed.

"Excuse me, can you help me?" I approached a teacher who was organizing papers at a nearby table. She looked up, her expression warm but professional.

"Of course! You must be one of the new students. What's your name?"

"Elaine White," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Ah, yes! Welcome to Crestwood. Let me find your dorm assignment." She rifled through a stack of papers, and I felt a flutter of nerves in my stomach. This was it—the first step into my new life.

"Here we go! You'll be in Dormitory B, Room 204. It's just down the hall." She handed me a key, and I felt its weight in my palm, a tangible symbol of my fresh start.

"Thank you," I said, a smile breaking through my apprehension. I turned to head toward the dormitory, my heart racing with anticipation.

As I walked through the corridors, I passed groups of students chatting and laughing, their voices echoing off the walls. I felt a pang of envy; they seemed so at ease, so confident. I quickened my pace, eager to reach my room and settle in.

When I finally found Dormitory B, I took a deep breath before pushing the door open. The room was small but cozy, with two beds, desks, and a window that overlooked the sprawling grounds. I dropped my bags on the nearest bed, claiming it as my own.
