Chapter 28 - 28. The Path of True Steel

The dining table was cluttered with the remnants of a hearty stew, but the centerpiece was a heavy, leather-bound volume that Henry had placed down with a rhythmic thud. The gold leaf on the cover shimmered under the magi-lamp, sporting the title: The Accelerated Core: Methods for Rapid Tier-1 Ascension.

"It wasn't cheap, son." Henry said, his eyes bright with a mixture of pride and anxiety. "I traded three seasons' worth of fermented iron-wheat and a favor from the village elder. This manual contains breathing techniques and a specific diet of monster-core extracts that can force the spirit refiner to expand. It's a shortcut to Level-5. Most kids in the city use it to reach Tier-2 before they're sixteen."

Gideon looked at the book, then at his foster father's calloused hands. He knew the sacrifice Henry had made. In a world where power was the only currency that never devalued, Henry was trying to buy his son a head start.

Sienna leaned in, her voice soft. "We just want you to be ready, Gideon. If you reach Tier-2, you can finally learn real skills. You won't just be swinging a sword; you'll have techniques. You'll be safer."

Gideon reached out, his fingers hovering over the leather. He felt the pull of it, the promise of ending the exhaustion, of finally being able to stand on equal footing with the veterans. But then, he looked inward. He felt the silver machinery of his custom spirit refiner, the one he had built screw by screw with his own focus. He thought of the Constitution Enhancement Exercise, which he had pushed to 20 grueling steps. He knew that the temporary adrenaline boost he gained while performing it was the only thing keeping him alive in real fights.

If he took this shortcut, would the foundation stay solid? Would he ever truly complete a full cycle of 30 steps to earn a permanent boost, or would his body become reliant on artificial expansion?

"I can't take it, Dad." Gideon said, his voice quiet but unshakable.

The room went silent. Henry's brow furrowed. "Son? Did I explain it wrong? This isn't a replacement for training; it's an enhancement."

Gideon stood up, pushing the chair back. "With all respect, Dad... it's a cheat. If I force my refiner to expand using extracts, I'm not actually getting stronger. I'm just stretching the skin. I want to reach Tier-2 on my own merits. I want my levels to be earned through blood and sweat, not bought with iron-wheat."

Henry saw the fire in the boy's eyes. Slowly, a small, proud smile tugged at the corner of Henry's mouth.

"You really are a stubborn one, Gideon Thorne." Henry said, using the surname they had officially registered for him only a week prior. "Fine. If you want the hard road, we won't stop you. But don't expect the monsters to go easy on you. And, you'd better not come crying to me when your muscles feel like they're being twisted by pliers."

"They already do, Dad." Gideon chuckled, feeling a weight lift from his shoulders. "They already do."

The next morning, Gideon Thorne met his team at the southern gate of Kamisk. The air was thick with humidity, a precursor to the swarms that emerged during the transition from late summer to autumn.

Manav and Meera were already there. Manav had polished his heavy armor until it gleamed, sitting confidently at Tier-1, Level-2. Gideon and Meera were still at Tier-1, Level-1, the lowest rung of the ladder. Raam stood to the side, leaning against a fence post, his Lightning Leopard, Lenny, pacing restlessly.

"The 'Brave Crow' is back." Manav greeted him with a grin. "I heard we're heading to the High Meadows. The farmers reported a 'Scythe-Wing' Grasshopper migration."

"It's a cloud of hundreds." Raam interrupted. "They're Tier-1, Level-2. They're fast, their carapaces are like reinforced glass, and their legs can kick through a wooden shield."

"We need the experience." Gideon said, checking his gear. Jaice sat on his shoulder, her feathers slicked down, her body tense.

"And remember." Raam added, "I'll only step in if Lenny has to start digging graves."

They set out toward the High Meadows. As they trekked, Gideon maintained the Constitution Enhancement Exercise, pushing into the 21st step. He felt the rush of power, the increased speed and strength. The pain was a constant companion now, a low-frequency hum in his nerves that he had learned to tune out, but he knew it was fleeting. He was refining his spirit energy as he walked, his storage containers vibrating with the density of the liquid spirit.

The moment he stopped the specific circulation of spirit energy through his veins, the boost would vanish, replaced by a crushing wave of fatigue. He was nowhere near the 30th step required for a permanent change.

They reached the High Meadows at noon. The landscape was a shifting wave of iridescent green devouring the golden grass. The sound was a dry, rasping scritch-scritch-scritch of thousands of serrated legs.

"Formation!" Raam barked. "Manav, front and center with the Bison! Gideon, flanks! Meera, you and the Hen take the high ground on that boulder! Go!"

The swarm noticed them instantly. A single scout let out a metallic chirp, and the emerald tide turned. The first wave hit like a physical wall.

Manav and his Metal Horn Bison, being Level-2, took the brunt. The collision was sickening. Three grasshoppers were instantly impaled, but six more vaulted over, their powerful legs denting Manav's shield.

Gideon didn't wait. He sprinted to the left, his short sword already infused with a dark red glow.

Clang! His blade struck a thorax mid-leap. It was like hitting a brick. At Level-1, Gideon was at a severe disadvantage. The grasshoppers were Level-2; they were faster and stronger. He had to maintain the 21st step of his exercise just to keep pace, his body screaming under the strain of the temporary boost.

"Jaice, Wind Gust!" Gideon commanded.

Jaice took flight, her wings beating furiously. Her gusts knocked the leaping monsters off balance, giving Gideon the split second he needed to dodge.

Thirty minutes in, the meadow was a carnage of green ichor. But the team was flagging. Manav's armor was becoming a tomb of heat. Meera was down to her last quiver, her Steel Claw Hen fighting a desperate melee on the boulder.

"Gideon! They're flanking!" Meera screamed.

Gideon looked up. A group of grasshoppers was bypassing the front line, heading straight for the archer.

"Raam!" Gideon yelled, but Raam was occupied, his Lightning Leopard a blur of gold and blue sparks as it intercepted a second swarm emerging from the tall grass. Raam was busy, deliberately leaving the core group to find their own limits.

This was the life and death moment. Gideon felt his spirit refiner screaming. The red mist in his spirit space was being sucked dry by his constant infusion. His muscles, strained by the 21st step of the exercise, were on the verge of tearing.

This was the life and death moment.

If he stopped the exercise now, he would collapse, and Meera would be defenseless.

I won't stop! Gideon thought. Break through!

He gritted his teeth, maintaining the 21st step with a mental iron will. He forced his spirit refiner to work harder, pulling in every scrap of ambient energy.

"MANAV! PUSH!" Gideon roared.

Manav let out a primal yell, his Metal Horn Bison glowing with a faint brown light. They charged a reckless, devastating plow through the center of the swarm. At the same moment, Meera's Steel Claw Hen let out a screech, its claws glowing with a metallic sheen. Meera notched her final arrows, her focus absolute.

Gideon felt it then... a sudden, violent expansion in his chest.

Inside his spirit space, the silver machinery of his spirit refiner hummed with a resonance that shook his bones. The storage containers glowed white-hot as they forcibly expanded to accommodate a larger volume of liquid spirit energy.

Gideon Thorne leveled up to Tier-1, Level-2.

Meera and her Steel Claw Hen leveled up to Tier-1, Level-2.

Simultaneously, a massive shockwave of energy erupted from Manav as his own refiner underwent a metamorphosis.

Manav and his Metal Horn Bison levelled up to Tier-1, Level-3.

The transformation was immediate. Gideon felt a surge of vitality as his base strength and speed increased by 10%. His spirit refiner was now significantly larger, allowing him to store more energy for his infusions.

"NOW!" Gideon screamed.

With his new base power added to the adrenaline boost of the 21st step, he became a blur. He reached the boulder in seconds, his sword a streak of red light. In three precise movements, he decapitated the grasshoppers threatening Meera.

Jaice, catching the wake of the level-up, felt her own wings grow stronger. She dived, her wind blades now sharp enough to sever the grasshoppers' legs with surgical precision.

Manav, now at Level-3, like a juggernaut, rampaged through the remaining swarm, crushing carapaces like eggshells.

When the last grasshopper lay twitching, silence returned to the High Meadows. The teenagers were covered in green ichor, their armor dented, but their auras were steady and intense.

Gideon finally stopped the Constitution Enhancement Exercise. He felt the temporary boost drain away, replaced by the usual crushing fatigue, but it wasn't as bad as before. His new Level-2 base attributes, the 10% increase remained. He was physically larger, more robust, and his spirit refiner was no longer a tiny, cramped box.

Raam walked toward them. "You did it." He said softly. "You expanded your refiners through pure combat. That foundation is going to be unbreakable."

Gideon looked at his hands. He hadn't reached the 30th step yet; he hadn't earned the permanent "full cycle" boost that would change his life. But he had grown. He had leveled up.

"Next week?" Meera joked, wiping slime from her bow.

Gideon looked at Jaice, who landed on his shoulder and let out a triumphant caw. They had survived. They had rejected the easy path. And in the silence of the meadow, Gideon Thorne knew he was one step closer to the truth.
