Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Dharma Artifact, Zitan Wooden Fish!

Watching the Buddha shadow nearly solidify, the tightly closed Buddha eyes also slowly opened.

However, the golden light that was about to reach its peak suddenly dimmed.

This was...

The enhancement failed?

Looking at the buddha scriptures that hadn't changed at all, Hayato was slightly taken aback.

He didn't expect enhancement could actually fail.

But then again, if every enhancement succeeded, this system would be too heaven-defying.

He had already used two of his three enhancement opportunities.

There was one enhancement opportunity left.

What should he enhance?

Hayato's gaze swept across the room and landed on the medicine buddha enshrined in the center of the main hall. After thinking about it, he shook his head again.

Enhancing a buddha scriptures had failed; enhancing a buddha would probably rely even more on luck.

"Let's enhance something simpler."

Hayato picked up the wooden fish in front of him.

This wooden fish, however, was an old antique. According to the old man, it had existed since the very beginning of the construction of this Yakushi Temple.

He wondered what changes would occur after it was enhanced.

"Don't fail."

Hayato took a deep breath and directly used his last enhancement opportunity on the wooden fish.

Swish!

As a ray of light flashed, all the fine cracks on the wooden fish disappeared, and its color turned into a faint purplish-gold.

Sunlight shone upon it, and the surface of the wooden fish refracted dense buddha scriptures characters.

[Zitan Wooden Fish]

[Having been baptized by the painstaking Buddha Law efforts of dozens of eminent monks, it has attained Buddha nature. It can help people enter samadhi and cultivate Zen, and drive away evil and ward off demons.]

Zitan Wooden Fish?

This thing should be quite valuable, right?

Hayato's expression was strange. A wooden fish that could drive away evil and ward off demons? This thing could be considered a Dharma artifact, couldn't it?

As for Dharma artifacts, he had only heard of them but had never seen one.

Within the entire territory of Japan, the Buddhist treasures that could be called Dharma artifacts were few and far between.

Most of these Dharma artifacts came from Long Country and were basically enshrined in those highly renowned Temples.

A small Temple like Yakushi Temple had never seen what a Dharma artifact looked like in its entire existence.

Just casually enhancing something resulted in getting a Dharma artifact. This was simply a huge profit.

Thump~ Thump~

Hayato picked up the mallet and gently struck the Zitan Wooden Fish.

The clear and ethereal sound of the wooden fish reverberated layer by layer within the main hall, its lingering echo circling the beams and penetrating directly into the mind.

His originally somewhat excited mood inexplicably calmed down the moment he heard the sound of the wooden fish.

His mind was free of distractions, achieving sudden enlightenment in an instant.

It was as if profoundly knowledgeable Masters of Buddha Law were chanting scriptures next to his ear, bringing enlightenment.

As the sound of the wooden fish gradually faded, Hayato felt as though his understanding of the Buddha Law had deepened considerably.

This thing really is a treasure.

Looking at the wooden fish in front of him, Hayato couldn't help but smack his lips.

Just one reinforcement had this effect; if it were reinforced a few more times, he couldn't even imagine how amazing this thing would be.

Thump, thump, thump!

Suddenly, a series of hurried footsteps came from behind.

Hayato turned back in surprise, discovering two simply dressed men with terrified expressions on their flustered faces.

It was as if they had seen something terrifying.

They rushed into the Temple in a hurry, even forgetting the most basic rituals.

"What is the matter, both laymen?"

Hayato asked with a frown, lightly tapping the wooden fish in front of him as he spoke.

The ethereal sound of the wooden fish echoed. The two men, who had been looking panicked, felt their minds inexplicably calm down upon hearing this sound.

They exchanged glances, and surprise couldn't help but appear in their eyes.

They were residents of a small town near Yakushi Temple and had encountered trouble this time. Coming to Yakushi Temple was originally just to try their luck, and they didn't hold much hope in their hearts.

Unexpectedly, this young Master actually had some abilities.

Thinking of this, the two middle-aged men directly knelt on the ground, their heads touching the floor.

"Master, we would like to ask you to perform a religious service."

Perform a religious service?

Hayato's eyes were suspicious. Performing religious services was the main source of income for the Temple, and he had performed many since inheriting Yakushi Temple.

A single religious service could bring in at least three to four hundred thousand yens in remuneration.

Which was equivalent to ten to twenty thousand RMB.

But looking at the appearance of these two fellows, this religious service was probably not as simple as he imagined.

However, extra income that came knocking was income that shouldn't be missed.

Since he had nothing else to do anyway, Hayato changed into his going-out clothes and nodded at the two middle-aged men.

"Let's go!"

When leaving the Temple, Hayato casually took the handwritten buddha scriptures and the red sandalwood wooden fish with him.

These were his tools for making a living.

Now, the most valuable things in the entire Yakushi Temple were these buddha scriptures and the red sandalwood wooden fish.

To put it bluntly, even selling the entire Yakushi Temple wouldn't compare to these two Buddha treasures of his, which were comparable to Dharma artifacts.

Leaving the Temple, led by the two middle-aged men, Hayato arrived at a somewhat remote small town.

While called a small town, it wasn't actually backward.

It was just located in a remote area, far from the prosperous City.

Two or three-story wooden houses were scattered around, and the streets were narrow but kept relatively clean.

However, there didn't seem to be much human presence.

The young people from the town had all gone to the bustling cities to work hard, leaving mostly elderly and middle-aged people behind.

Just as Hayato was contemplating, the two middle-aged men had already brought him to a three-story small building.
