Laurel P.O.V
Time stopped.
Alpha's word echoed through the living room like a death sentence.
"Choose one"
Silence swallowed the room.
I looked at Richardo.
His face revealed nothing.
No fear.
No anger.
Only those cold, calculating and unreadable eyes, the eyes of a man who had already made his decision long before he walked into Alpha's penthouse.
Alpha leaned back with a satisfied smile.
"Well?" Richardo slowly exhaled, then he smiled.
It wasn't the smile of a desperate man.
It was the smile of a man holding the final move in a game nobody else realized had already begun.
"I choose..."
My heartbeat disappeared.
"...neither"
The smile vanished from Alpha's face.
"I didn't come here to choose" Richardo slipped one hand into the pocket of his coat.
His eyes never left Alpha's.
"I came here..."
A heartbeat passed.
"...to collect"
Before anyone could react.
The lights went out.
The entire penthouse plunged into darkness.
Every chandelier blinked out at once.
Then-
BEEEEEP!
Everything happened at once.
The deafening shriek of emergency alarms ripped through the silence.
Red warning lights flashed violently, turning the luxurious living room into a nightmare painted in crimson.
"Che diavolo-?" Somewhere in the darkness,a guard shouted in Italian.
(TRANSLATION: What the hell-?)
"Che diavolo sta succedendo?" Alpha's voice roared through the darkness. "Move! Don't stand there! Find them!"
(TRANSLATION: What the hell is going on?)
Before anyone obeyed, the floor shook beneath my knees, glass shattered somewhere below.
Another explosion followed.
Then another.
The magnificent chandelier swayed wildly overhead.
Paintings crashed from the walls.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Panic spread through the guards as voices burst from communication radios.
"Boss!"
"Sono dentro!"
(TRANSLATION: They're inside!)
"Ce ne sono su ogni piano!"
(TRANSLATION: They're on every floor!)
"L'ingresso est è compromesso!"
(TRANSLATION: The east entrance is compromised!)
"Il team sul tetto ha smesso di dare notizie!"
(TRANSLATION: The rooftop team has gone silent!)
"La sala sicurezza è stata violata!"
(TRANSLATION: The security room has been breached!)
For the first time,i heard uncertainty in Alpha's silence.
The darkness became everyone's enemy.
No one could tell friend from foe.
I covered my head instinctively as someone slammed into the table.Another body crashed against the wall.
Voices echoed from every direction.
"Proteggete Alpha!"
(TRANSLATION: Protect Alpha!)
"Bloccate il corridoio!"
(TRANSLATION: Block the hallway!)
"Assicurate i prigionieri!"
(TRANSLATION: Secure the prisoners!)
The red emergency lights flickered on and off, giving me only brief flashes of what was happening.
Masked men moved like shadows.
Black uniforms.
Richardo's men.
They didn't hesitate.
They moved with frightening precision, disappearing into the darkness almost as quickly as they appeared.
Then Richardo's calm voice floated through the darkness. "Three teams" His voice sounded impossibly close.
"Si entrava attraverso il garage sotterraneo"
(TRANSLATION: One entered through the underground garage)
Another explosion triggered.
"Uno attraverso gli ascensori di servizio"
(TRANSLATION: One through the service elevators)
Gunfire echoed from somewhere deep inside the building.
Every burst sounded planned.
"And the third..."
Richardo stepped into the flickering red light.
"...walked through your front door"
Alpha stared at him. "You've declared war"
Richardo adjusted his cuff as though they were discussing business over dinner. "I merely accepted your invitation"
Guns were pointed at him as soon as guards surged forward from every direction.
A gunshot from nowhere erupted another chaos.
Furniture overturned.
Marble tables crashed across the polished floor.
Masked men dressed in black flooded into the living room through shattered windows and hidden entrances.
Silver wolf emblems glinted on their sleeves.
I knew they were Richardo's people.
A rescue disguised as a siege.
Alpha barked orders.
"Sigillate ogni uscita!"
(TRANSLATION: Seal every exit!)
"Proteggete gli ostaggi!"
(TRANSLATION: Protect the hostages!)
"No one leaves the building!"
A powerful crash answered him.
The room became a maze of overturned sofas, broken glass and flying splinters from shattered furniture.
Smoke drifted through the flashing emergency lights.
Someone slammed into the grand piano, sending a harsh chord echoing through the room.
The expensive decorations that once made the penthouse look untouchable were reduced to rubble within seconds.
My breathing became uneven.
I couldn't tell who was winning.
I couldn't even tell where Richardo was anymore.
People were shouting.
Running.
Colliding.
The entire penthouse sounded like it was collapsing around us.
I couldn't breathe.
I couldn't think.
All I knew was that I had to get away.
Now.
I lowered myself slowly, trying not to draw attention.
Everyone's eyes were fixed on the chaos.
Nobody was watching me.
This was my chance.
I crawled behind the overturned marble table.
Then another.
Then slipped toward the nearest hallway.
My heart pounded so loudly I was sure someone would hear it.
I took more steps, almost made my way out,but a hand suddenly grabbed my arm. Before I could scream, another hand gently but firmly covered my mouth.
"Mm-!"
Panic exploded inside me.
Whoever grabbed me pulled me sharply backward into darkness.
I kicked and struggled wildly, trying to break free. But nothing worked, the grip only tightened.
"Mmph!" My voice disappeared beneath the hand covering my mouth.
My back collided against a solid chest as we slipped through a hidden service corridor.
I couldn't see.
Couldn't think.
Who was it?
One of Alpha's men?
Was i caught?
I struggled harder.
The stranger leaned close,a familiar scent reached me,it smelled more like an expensive cologne.
Without a word, the stranger dragged me through a hidden doorway concealed behind a damaged bookshelf.
The sounds of chaos instantly became distant. It was still loud, but muffled.
We hurried down a narrow service corridor.
My bare feet slapped against the cold concrete floor.
Every few seconds another explosion echoed somewhere above us.
The building trembled.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
My captor never slowed.
We descended one staircase.
Then another.
The deeper we went, the colder the air became.
I couldn't tell where we were anymore.
The only thing I knew was that whoever held me wasn't letting go.
Finally,we stopped.
A metal door creaked open just as an old underground air rushed across my face.
Vehicles were parked in long lanes with concrete pillars separating the cars.
The light dimmed.
It was an underground garage.
Only then did the hand slowly leave my mouth.
A deep whisper brushed against my ear. "You can breathe now"
I froze.
That voice...
I turned around.
The dim emergency lights illuminated his face, and i saw Richardo standing right in front of me.Relief crashed into me so suddenly my knees almost gave way.
It...it was him.
I hadn't realized how terrified I was until that moment.
He caught my arm before I could stumble, his grip wasn't rough, and it was steady.
For the first time since my nightmare had begun.
I felt safe.
Not because the danger had disappeared.
But because somehow,Richardo had found me in the middle of complete chaos.
Behind us, faint explosions and distant shouting still echoed through the underground levels.
"You..." I whispered, struggling to catch my breath. "I thought-"
"I know" His voice remained calm. "We don't have much time"
He guided me toward a waiting black van hidden between two armoured SUVs.
The side door slid open.
Several of his men were already inside, checking weapons, radios, and maps.
One of them nodded respectfully.
"Underboss"
Richardo answered without looking away from me. "Get her out"
I looked at him in confusion.
"What about Abigail?"
His eyes lifted toward the ceiling.
Even underground,we could still hear the distant sounds of alarms.
Shouting.
More explosions.
The battle wasn't over.
It had only moved deeper into the penthouse.
Richardo looked back at me.
"I'm going to get her"
"No" The word escaped before I could stop it.
He paused.
I stepped closer. "You can't go back"
A tiny smile appeared on his face.
"Someone has to"
My throat tightened.
He had saved me first.
He could have escaped.Instead,he was turning around.
For Abigail.
For his people.
For his promise.
Without realizing it, I reached for the sleeve of his coat.
Not to stop him,but just to hold onto him for one more second.
He glanced at my hand, then at me.
For a brief moment, the chaos outside seemed to disappear.
There was only silence.
Only the two of us.
Only the sound of my heartbeat.
"I'll come back" he said quietly.
It wasn't dramatic.
It wasn't loud.
It sounded like a simple promise and strangely,i believed him completely. For the first time since my life had fallen apart,i wanted to trust him.
Not because I had no other choice.
Because something inside me finally believed he would never abandon me.
One of the men opened the van door wider.
"Miss Laurel"
I climbed inside without arguing.
Without questioning.
Without looking back.
The engine rumbled to life.
The van began rolling toward the exit.
As we reached the ramp, I glanced through the side-view mirror.
There he was.
Standing alone beneath the flickering underground lights, his coat fluttered in the cold air. Then, without hesitation, Richardo turned around and walked straight back toward the staircase.
There was something in his expression I'd never seen before. Not the cold strategist, not the ruthless underboss, but something softer.
I pressed my trembling hand against the window, watching him disappear into the darkness. And for the first time, somewhere between running for my life and watching him walk back into danger,my heart had begun choosing him long before I ever did.
I realized I wasn't just hoping he would survive.
I was terrified of losing him.
