Leslie pushes herself to her feet, still shaky but clearly functional. I open the door for her since she does not yet know how to command the ship. Without another word, she steps into the corridor and disappears.
The room suddenly feels quieter.
"I am scared," Tina admits softly.
"You do not have to do this," I remind her again.
Her gaze hardens. "If that woman can do it, then I will do it better." She draws in a deep breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "Just do me one favor."
"Anything," I say without hesitation.
"Stay with me while it happens. I think I will handle it better if you are close."
I blink, then lean down and kiss her gently. Her lips tremble beneath mine. I can taste fear there, but also determination. I brush her hair back from her face.
"I will do everything in my power to help you," I whisper. After a brief pause, I add, "My love."
