Chapter 27 - Town Square

Morning arrived, and the golden rays of the sun slowly peeled through the worn curtains of the small, dusty inn room that currently housed the sleeping trio. Particles of dust danced lazily in the beams of light that managed to pierce the dim interior, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere in the otherwise modest accommodations.

One by one, they all began to stir from their slumber, waking in a collective fog of grogginess. Each of them dragged their heavy, tired bodies off the creaking bed with varying degrees of success and enthusiasm. The mattress springs protested softly as weight shifted and bodies moved.

Rowan stretched his arms high above his head, his joints popping in protest, as he released a jaw-cracking yawn that seemed to consume his entire face. Once the yawn subsided, he began speaking, his voice still rough and scratchy from sleep. "Gosh, Barthen and the others kept us up way too late last night," he grumbled, though there was no real heat behind the complaint.

Kai rubbed his eyes with the heels of his palms, trying to chase away the lingering drowsiness that clung to him like a stubborn shadow. He looked over at Rowan and couldn't help but smirk at his friend's disheveled appearance. "Yeah..." he agreed simply, his voice trailing off.

A small, comfortable silence filled the room for a moment, broken only by the sounds of their movements and the distant noise of the town beginning to wake outside their window. Then Maya spoke up, her voice cutting through the quiet like a bell.

"It sure was fun though!" she exclaimed with enthusiasm that seemed completely at odds with the early hour. "We should do it again tonight!" She was already seemingly wide awake and full of energy, adorning a large, toothy smile that practically radiated excitement. Her eyes sparkled with the memory of the previous night's festivities.

Kai let out a soft laugh while simultaneously releasing another yawn, covering his mouth with the back of his hand. "We probably won't have time tonight, Maya," he explained with a patient tone. "We have a lot to do today. Our schedule is pretty packed."

Maya's cheerful demeanor immediately dimmed like a candle being snuffed out, replaced by the classic demeanor of a pouting child who had just been told they couldn't have dessert before dinner. Her shoulders slumped, her smile vanished, and her lower lip jutted out ever so slightly. "Fine..." she said in a drawn-out, unhappy way that made her disappointment crystal clear to everyone in the room.

Kai sighed at her dramatic display, but then his expression shifted as an idea struck him. A grin spread across his face as he looked at Maya with a mischievous glint in his eye. "Tell you what though," he offered, his tone becoming conspiratorial. "If we manage to finish everything on our list today and still have some money left over afterward, how about we use the bathhouse tonight? My treat."

And suddenly, like a switch flipping or storm clouds parting to reveal the sun, Maya's face reset once again to an expression of pure, unbridled excitement. Her eyes went wide and her entire body seemed to vibrate with renewed energy. "Really?!" she practically shouted, bouncing on her toes.

Kai and Rowan looked at each other and immediately began to laugh at Maya's extreme reaction and her wildly swinging moods. The sound of their laughter filled the small room with warmth and camaraderie.

Maya, however, quickly got mad at being laughed at, her face flushing with embarrassment and indignation. She began threatening to hurt them both if they didn't stop, her fists raised in mock anger, though the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth betrayed her true feelings.

After this brief but entertaining scuffle had run its course, they all finished getting ready for the day ahead. They gathered their belongings, straightened their clothes, and made themselves as presentable as their limited resources allowed. Finally, they left the inn, stepping out into the morning air.

Now back in the main streets of the town, they got to see everything in a completely different light—quite literally because it was now morning and the sun illuminated everything beautifully, but also because the streets were much more filled with life than they had been the previous evening when they'd arrived. People of all types and races filled the cobblestone streets, creating a vibrant tapestry of humanity and diversity. Humans walked alongside elves, dwarves conducted business with merchants of unknown origin, and the occasional exotic race passed by, drawing curious glances. The sound of conversation, haggling, laughter, and the general bustle of daily life filled the air like a symphony of civilization.

The three companions stopped in their tracks and looked around in wonder for a moment, taking in the spectacle before them. The morning market was in full swing, with vendors calling out their wares and the smell of fresh bread wafting from nearby bakeries.

"A-awesome," Maya breathed out, her voice filled with genuine awe at the sight before them.

Rowan and Kai chuckled at her reaction, finding her wonder infectious and endearing. "Yeah..." Rowan agreed quietly, his own eyes still scanning the busy streets.

Following up, Kai spoke with a more business-like tone, bringing their attention back to their objectives. "Alright, first stop, the Mages Guild so we can get registered as mages." His voice carried the weight of purpose and determination.

How Kai had found out it worked in this world was actually quite straightforward, though the implications were far-reaching. If you wanted to do anything revolving around the use of magic—anything at all—you needed to officially register with the Mages Guild first. Whether you wanted to be a teacher at a magic academy, an adventurer who used magic, a magic soldier serving in a kingdom's army, a student hoping to study at a magic academy, or anything else that involved the magical arts, registration was mandatory. It was the law, and it was taken seriously. There were no exceptions, no shortcuts, no way around it.

So the Mages Guild would be their first stop on this busy day, the first step in their journey to becoming recognized in this new world.
