Chapter 2 - Chapter 1: Where Duty begins

From The Divine Book of Forgotten Suns — Cycle of The Flame That Burns Itself

Inscribed by the Angel of the Damned

"Even in silence, the fire remembers what it was meant to burn."

Scene 1 — The Brothers at the End

"I know it won't mean much brother but I'm truly sorry. I shouldn't have chased after you." Watching the tears of gold streak down my little brother's face as the chaos gave him a chance to say bye.

Only giving us this one moment after eons of fighting. Heartbreaks and horrors that'll never be understood by anyone else once we're gone.

"Don't be. You did what you thought was right and as your brother it would be wrong to judge you based on how things played out.

You came into the sea to save me and how fate has played us to get to this ending is not your fault."

Holding the angel who unknowingly saved me as her wings flashed between gold and black. The madness of her actions truly forcing her mind to shatter.

The only clarity left is the small light that's focused on my eyes, refusing to let go of this sliver of time we fought for only to be played against each other.

Beauty that couldn't be described as even my brother couldn't accept how things ended, understanding choices needed to be made.

How regrets were never the worst thing to deal with but the madness of knowing you didn't do enough. Surrounded by the boys of my former soldiers yet even I can't help but shudder at how they were corrupted and pitted against me by the Gods.

While the astral horrors of man fought in my name to stop the inevitable. As this mountain top staring out into antiquity gave me the best scene to say goodbye to my angel as she forcefully pushed herself back.

Grabbing a fistful of the black flames eating at my left shoulder — an act even I can't reverse as he forced her light to feed it to speed up the fire.

Mouthing goodbye after the final kiss, leaving me with the only soul left that I could care for in this place. Where I used to watch the seven peaks holding up the sky of my master's grandfather — being the only place that could truly bring me peace after eons of fighting.

"Tenebris at the en—" holding my hand up as I put my cigarette back in my mouth.

"Not your fault, so don't beat yourself over it. The person in charge already got their beating from me. This is just tidying up. Didn't work out so I'll do what I planned. Goodbye and I hope we can truly find peace."

Seeing the light flash out his eyes as I feed the darkness inside me, using what's left of my sun flames to feed this black parasite. As my body explodes without any regrets this time.

Scene 2 — The Dungeon

"Thomas!" Seeing Crow yelling as I landed in the way of Alexis and the death knight, catching his sword along my shield as Crow launched wordless spells to push it back.

Me and Crow handling the close combat as Crow supplemented spells to keep the pressure from being too much on me, while Alexis kept aiming for the death core of this death knight with her arrows enchanted with light.

Aiming to use the element difference — my sword covered in fire and Crow launching lightning bolts and fireballs — as earth walls were used to block the attacks we couldn't stop.

"We need to fall back now! The flare won't keep us alive if the teachers and travelers from the society can't make—" Yanking Crow back as my shield took his place, blocking the downward swing on the knight as Crow launched another lightning bolt to push it back.

Yet just as quick as I pulled Crow back, he had to pull me down to the ground as I watched a pair of claws barely miss my head while an arrow of light hit its target in the air, sending the winged monster to the ground. I had to get up and readjust what just happened.

Catching sight of the harpy we saw fighting alongside other monsters attacking a black masked monster with horns.

Seeing the one thing we didn't after trying to shake this death knight off our tail — his allied monsters showed up.

Something that should be impossible, yet it's happening in front of us.

"Both of you, run now!" Using his mana to blast away as he tried to take his shirt off only for another presence to appear followed by two more monsters.

Cutting off Crow's mana blast by grabbing his hand as their faces met. A black mask wearing a just as dark robe, carrying that spear that looked entirely black like it came from the shadows.

Crow looked up with a shocked face only to be sent in our direction as another mana blast sent all of us flying. Yet none of the trees harmed us as we landed in front of the portal.

Everyone around us stared in shock as the teachers who were about to take off stopped, focused on us. While my eyes looked back to see the worst sight we've only heard about — a pitch-black portal instead of its vibrant teal.

"Good, we don't need to know for now. Just get ready for the monster tide that's coming our way. You'll be with the student groups. Split up and take control of the groups."
