The sharp intake of breath from Maria behind me was deafening. She sounded like she expected me to pull out my gun and execute Nicole right there on the bed.
I walked toward the the bed and my eyes trailed down Nicole curled in the middle of the bed, she was alseep on my bed, like she owned it. Like she'd been sleeping there her whole life. Hair everywhere, her cheek buried in my pillow, she definitely must have slept while waiting for me to come back and see her here, because her knees tucked slightly up as if she'd gotten cold in the middle of her rebellion.
