Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – First steps

Ava started by taking stock of where she was and what she already had, as it had been 4 years since she was in this apartment and 4 years since she had needed to check her bank account. Bringing up her online banking app she saw she had just under eighty thousand dollars in her account and savings but that was just her account, she had inherited all of her parents assets including their house as well as their $250.000 life insurance policy which was due to be cashed out in a few days is her memory served her right. Noting down all this she estimated that by next Monday she would have around three hundred and thirty thousand dollars, she thought that it wasn't enough for what she would need going forward. If she wanted to be prepared, she would need a lot more. She had her parents' house and their assets which she could sell, but she couldn't remember much about what they had at the house from her last life, either through grief or the fact her aunt and uncle insisted on helping her empty the house last time. Hopefully adding the value of the house and the contents should be enough for her to get a good head start stocking before the disasters began. Then she could also make a blueprint of the areas that will get flooded first so she could do some free stocking up, as all these things will be ruined by the disasters anyway so her breaking in and taking them shouldn't be hurting anyone or effecting anyone else's survival.

She quickly thought about how at this point in time she was still living in her 1 bed rented apartment that she had been in since college. The one her parents helped her pick after she graduated and started working at the hospital nearby. Looking around she thought about all the good memories she had before her parents' death which had only happened a month prior. Thinking about the car accident she quickly realised that she hadn't given anything to her aunt or uncle at this point and that thought alone made her smile. To start she should clear out her apartment and give up the lease, move back to her parents' house and use that as a base while preparing for the future. Looking around she thought of the upcoming tasks while getting her phone out she rang her boss at the hospital. She knew at this time she was still on compassionate leave, but she would be expected to return next week, and she had too much to do before the apocalypse to worry about that.

Waiting for the ringing to connect Ava thought of the good people who she worked with, she was a nurse just like her mum and she had always wanted to work in a hospital since she was a child. "Hello" Director Marsh answered on the other end. "Hello Director Marsh, its Ava Nui." She stated "Hello Nurse Nui, how are you? What can i do for you?" The director said sadly as this was only the second time they had spoken since her parents' deaths. "I'm hanging in their thanks director, but I'm calling to resign. As there is just too much going on at the moment, I can't come back to work next week like we had discussed." Surprised and saddened Director Marsh quickly responded "Is resigning totally necessary, i could always extend your leave by another week or two. We would hate to lose you, although i understand it must be difficult with the loss of your parents" Marsh hoped he didn't sound unsympathetic but getting well trained staff is already a headache and he was understaffed as it was. Ava knew he was trying to keep her, but she firmly responded "I'm afraid a few weeks won't be enough. There is just far more to do than I anticipated, and it would be easier to leave and potentially reapply later." She lied about later returning as he didn't need to know she would be busy prepping for the disasters. Ava could hear the heavy sigh down the phone "Okay Nurse Nui, I know you have a lot to deal with and I am sorry to lose you especially like this, but I understand. Just email me through your letter of resignation and I will complete the process and send you your final paycheck." Ava thanked him and agreed to sort everything out and send it through later that day. After getting off the phone with Director Marsh she quickly rang her landlord telling him she was moving out and would be out of the premises by the end of the day. He understood but with the short notice she would only receive half her security deposit once the apartment had been looked at and confirmed it had no damage. She agreed and hung up.

Moving around her apartment she moved all her furniture into the concrete space, as it seemed similar in size to her 1 bed apartment, she left the layout the same. Making sure all her daily essential were moved as well. Her clothes, shoes, bags, towels, sheets, documents, decorations went into her bedroom, she cleared out all the kitchen cupboards and fridge contents into her space leaving behind the fridge, dishwasher and washing machine as they came with the apartment and weren't hers. Not that it mattered she could always use the ones at her parents' house. Including the fridge contents which wasn't much as she remembered she wasn't eating well after her parents died, she noted she had several cans of soup, tomatoes, spices, meat cutlets and veggies from the kitchen. Along with all the utensils, snacks and cleaning supplies.

The living room went in next with her bookcases, sofa, tv, rug and computer going in smoothly leaving plenty of extra room in her space, she noted the rooms were larger than she initially thought. The bathroom stock including her makeup, medicines, toilet roll and sanitary products went in with ease, and she thought of how best to optimise the rooms in her space as time wouldn't affect them meaning using up every useable space was essential. Before long the whole place was empty and all she had left out was her phone which she had in her hand. After all of that it was 1pm and she realised she hadn't had breakfast and was starving. Rushing downstairs onto the street Ava was shocked with the crowded streets having to remind herself this was normal before the apocalypse behavior.

Outside the residential building, people were walking in groups, couples were walking hand in hand, everyone was just moving along and chattering about everyday life. It was all rather emotional seeing how calm it all was, everyone before world order is destroyed.
