One student, who everyone knew needed mental help even a doctor who specialized in psychiatry knew he needed serious help. I was in class learning about heart, but someone was making a disruption with their phone. It was the guy, who needed mental help, on the phone talking but left to continue his call. Later came back still on the phone but this time angry and heard him saying in Spanish "I hate you Dad! I hate you Dad!" Then he pushed desks in the back to point, I thought he was going to grab one of desks and hurt someone but he just left instead. After that episode, the class including the professor thought we needed to take a break as some classmates said "Professor, I think we needed to take a break to process what just happened?!" The professor looked with an exhausted expression on his face as he turned to ask me, but I think he already knew the answer "Anne, what do you think class or break?" I replied back "I would say continue with class, but after that event, I have to agree with them on this one because it's caused an elephant in the room that we need to emotionally address." We took a break from class.
The next day, I went to Raul's empty classroom with a concerned look on my face as he asked me "Anne, what's wrong?" I replied back "I can't tell you it's too public here." He could hear concern in voice and a hint of fear as well "Ok, do you want me to close and lock the door?" I replied back "Yes, it's too public to speak." To make me more comfortable he closed the door and locked it then asked again "Anne, what's wrong?" I replied back feeling comforted by his emotional embrace as he locked the door "I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want this conversation becoming gossip and someone getting hurt because this is not gossip because 30 other people saw this happened ." He could tell I was afraid of something as he looked into my eyes as he asked "What are you afraid of my sweetheart? I'm right here you can tell me. I will protect you as a professor of this medical school, as your advisor and as the man who is madly in love with you Anne." I replied back "Yesterday, was terribly scary." He asked "Why?!" I replied back as I looked down "Well! Yesterday in class, one of my classmates was on the phone in class and realized he was interrupting class then left the room. Ten minutes later, he came back angrily into the room while on the phone saying "I hate you Dad! I hate you Dad!" He ended his call with the same angry intensity as he slumped into the wood and metal desk at the back close to the wall as he said the following to the professor "What's the point of this lecture and you professor?!" As he had a look like he wanted to hurt someone or something but thank goodness he left when he did. After that episode, the class including the professor thought we needed to take a break as some classmates said "Professor, I think we needed to take a break to process what just happened?!" The professor looked with an exhausted expression on his face as he turned to ask me, but I thought he already knew the answer "Anne, what do you think of class or break?" I replied back "I would say continue with class, but after that event, I have to agree with them on this one because it's caused an elephant in the room that we need to emotionally address." We took a break from class. After our break, we reflected on what just happened while still not feeling emotionally comfortable as we continued with class."
He replied back with concern as I finished telling him what happened yesterday and embraced me before he spoke "Ok, I'm going to report this to the administration. Don't worry they will not know it was you who told me. I want to keep you safe at this school and anywhere. If you see him just stay out of his way and don't engage him. Keep studying hard." I replied back more hopefully and felt safer after talking to him than a few minutes before "I will study hard. And stay out of his way if I see him again." He replied back more joyful "That's my doctor I know and love!"
