The factory from earlier today…
Shen He thought for a moment. It was in the suburbs of New York, which was indeed convenient.
"I'm planning to move there tomorrow. Hydra already has eyes on me—giving them another chance to attack would be stupid." Shen He already had a rough plan forming in his mind. "J.A.R.V.I.S., help me gather information about Captain America's crash at the end of World War II. If possible, simulate the approximate crash site."
"Wait, Captain America? You mean that Captain America?" Tony still hadn't reacted fully.
"Of course. He was your father's friend." Shen He watched the information J.A.R.V.I.S. projected. "If we're going to deal with Hydra, it's better to bring in their greatest enemy. Tony, can you help me call Director Fury? We need some allies—people who can coordinate with us from the inside."
"Actually, I'd prefer if you told me about the future." Tony walked over with a glass of water. "I mean, if we're part of the same organization, shouldn't we be sharing information?"
He was never the type to blindly follow orders without knowing anything. The future crisis was what Tony cared about most now.
"Alright…" Shen He turned around, arranging his words. "Just as you're worried, an alien army invasion will happen. The battlefield will be in New York. And the U.S. government will throw a nuclear bomb—planning to destroy all of New York along with the aliens. Of course, in the future we observed, you stopped it."
The Battle of New York was practically the dividing line of the entire Marvel cinematic world.
Before it, these were just superhero stories.
After it, their missions were no longer about defeating villains, but about saving the world—to the extent that a single failure could mean global destruction.
"…I can't even picture what that would look like." Tony stared at Shen He. "Can we stop it?"
"Of course." Shen He turned back. "It's a massive crisis—but also a massive opportunity. So Tony, we need to prepare early. At the very least, we can't let Hydra suddenly jump out at a critical moment and ruin everything."
"Alright, I'll go get Fury. And I hope you'll have time to tell me more specifics." Tony began making his own preparations.
If war was inevitable, then he needed an army—one capable of protecting Earth.
Director Fury seemed to have been waiting for this moment. Only half an hour after receiving Tony's message, he appeared at the door.
With him were Coulson, Natasha, and Hawkeye.
"Looks like you've brought your most trusted people," Shen He said as he and Tony received them in the living room.
"I apologize for what happened tonight." Fury still wore a face like he had just returned from a funeral. "But if you had told us something in advance, this might not have happened."
"You're not omniscient. You can't handle everything," Shen He leaned forward slightly, staring into his one eye. "How much do you actually know about Hydra?"
"I only know they're like cockroaches in the sewers—possibly hiding in every dark corner. Including inside S.H.I.E.L.D."
Fury stared right back. With everything he'd discovered lately, he already had a very bad suspicion—but he still hoped it was unnecessary.
"Including S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
Unfortunately, Shen He directly shattered the last shred of Fury's illusions.
"To be precise, S.H.I.E.L.D. is Hydra. Because the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Alexander Pierce, is one of Hydra's leaders.
Fury, you've been sitting in a den of thieves without even knowing it."
"That's impossible." Coulson spoke up first. "Director Fury was personally promoted by Secretary Alexander."
If Alexander Pierce was a Hydra infiltrator, then didn't that mean even Director Fury himself might not be trustworthy?
Shen He didn't respond. He simply looked at Fury.
From the beginning, Fury hadn't said a word.
But his eyes and his expression were enough to show that he was not entirely confident that his old superior wasn't Hydra.
"I don't know which Hydra faction arranged tonight's attack, but—" Shen He leaned back into the sofa, his voice deep. "Everything happening in New York… going after Alexander is guaranteed to be the right move. We at Chaldea aren't a charity. And besides, for S.H.I.E.L.D., this is a chance to burn and be reborn—a phoenix's rebirth."
Shen He wanted to take down Alexander, but he couldn't just storm over and drag him out.
That would only bring trouble and wouldn't deal Hydra a real blow.
As the head of intelligence, Fury naturally understood.
"You want us to infiltrate Hydra from inside S.H.I.E.L.D.… then destroy Hydra Bureau together, don't you?"
"That's exactly what I mean." Shen He shrugged.
In the original storyline, S.H.I.E.L.D. would only collapse after the Battle of New York, betrayed by Hydra planted within them—then be reborn.
But Shen He couldn't wait that long. S.H.I.E.L.D. had already become one of Hydra's biggest bases.
He wanted to cut that base down now.
To avenge the attack tonight.
"I'll investigate what you've said first."
Naturally, Fury wasn't going to trust every word Shen He said just like that.
Shen He didn't mind. Given S.H.I.E.L.D.'s situation, collapse and rebirth was their only hope. As long as he pointed out Alexander's identity in advance, someone as decisive and intelligent as Fury would know what to do.
"What else do you want to tell me?"
Fury continued staring at him—he wanted more information.
"There is one more thing. Chaldea has decided to establish an external organization on Earth." Shen He pointed at Tony. "Tony has already joined. And Captain America, the Hulk, Thor—we're on good terms. So you can abandon your 'super boy' plan. Or, you can transfer Natasha and Hawkeye to me. Coulson can stay to help rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D."
"…"
Fury's expression darkened—so dark it outmatched his skin.
It was the first time he absolutely hated prophets.
"Tony." Fury turned to him. "Your father was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Oh? I almost forgot until you mentioned it." Tony blinked as if suddenly enlightened. "Given how you've managed the organization my father created… shouldn't I be asking you to answer for that?"
