Chapter 49 - chapter 49

The late afternoon sunlight spilled across the Steel mansion, glinting off polished floors and soft gold curtains. Ariana sat at her small desk in the study, sketchbook open, carefully outlining a new piece. She had lost herself in the lines and shadows, letting her mind wander as she painted quietly, savoring these moments of calm.

A gentle knock broke her focus.

"Come in," she said.

Damian stepped inside, removing his jacket, tie slightly loosened. He had just returned from the office. His eyes softened the moment they landed on her.

"You've been focused," he observed, walking closer. "What are you working on?"

Ariana held up the sketchbook. "Just… some ideas. A landscape I saw when I was younger."

Damian leaned over slightly, his gaze studying the work. "It's beautiful," he murmured, voice low, warm.

Her cheeks flushed. "Thank you… Damian."

He straightened and glanced at the clock. "I'll be staying in tonight. I thought we could have dinner together."

Ariana smiled. "I already prepared something. I wanted to bring it to you earlier, but…"

"Then let's eat here," he said simply, taking a seat beside her. His presence was steady, comforting, filling the room with warmth.

A Private, Playful Moment

As they shared the meal, Ariana laughed quietly at a story Damian recounted from the office. His rare smiles, small chuckles, and the way he leaned closer to hear her thoughts made her heart skip.

"You're softer than anyone imagines," she teased gently.

Damian raised an eyebrow. "Soft… only when I'm with you."

Ariana's lips curved into a smile, and for a moment, the empire, the office politics, and the endless responsibilities faded. It was just them. Quiet. Safe. Close.

Evening Reflections

After dinner, Damian stood and walked to the window, staring out over the city. Ariana followed and rested her hand lightly on his arm.

"You always do this," she said softly, "taking care of everyone else first. Don't forget to take care of yourself too."

"I'm taken care of," he replied, his hand brushing over hers. "I have you."

The city lights glimmered below, but nothing shone brighter than the quiet connection between them. In that moment, Damian didn't need the world to see him as untouchable. Here, with Ariana, he could simply be a man who loved, and who was loved in return.
