Chapter 17 - The Night Class

⚔️ Chapter 15:

The academy's upper wing was a maze of corridors, shadowed by flickering Ether lanterns that cast long, trembling shapes across the stone walls. The usual hum of students and instructors had faded, replaced by an oppressive silence that seemed to thrum with latent energy. Night had fallen, but in Velis Sol, night was never truly dark; the subtle pulse of Etherlight suffused the city, trickling into the academy like veins of liquid silver.

Kairu Ryoku moved cautiously, boots pressing against the cold stone floor. His coat flared slightly with each step, the faint shimmer of protective Ether weaving around him. He was not alone — though the halls appeared empty, he could feel eyes, threads of presence that twisted and shifted just beyond sight. Raviel stirred beneath his skin, a whispering flame of anticipation and warning.

"Something's wrong," Kairu muttered under his breath, his voice swallowed by the silence. [Indeed… do not underestimate it.]

A sudden crack echoed through the corridor — a door splintering as if under immense force. Kairu froze, the hair on his arms standing on end. Shadows danced along the walls, forming shapes that were almost human, almost alive. He knew these were no ordinary intruders; these were rogue spirits, drawn to the academy by the pulse of latent Ether that Kairu's presence radiated.

From the darkness, a figure materialized: tall, skeletal, yet wrapped in a shifting cloak of mist and flame. Its eyes glowed with a pale, unnatural light. It hovered silently, its fingers long and jagged, as if designed to tear through the veil between worlds. Behind it, dozens more emerged, each a distorted echo of human form, their bodies semi-transparent and shimmering with faint threads of twisted Ether.

Kairu's chest tightened. The mark on his palm flared violently, warmth racing up his arm. He could feel Raviel moving inside him, curling like a serpent ready to strike. [Control, Kairu. Not panic.]

He raised his hands instinctively. Threads of silver light erupted from his palms, spiraling toward the nearest spirit. The Ether coils struck the intruder, slicing through its misty form, and the spirit recoiled, shrieking in a soundless scream that rattled the stone walls. Sparks of residual energy scattered across the corridor, illuminating the cracks in the floors and the vaulted arches above.

Kairu's first strike barely touched the mass of spirits. They were fast — impossibly fast — weaving through the corridor with a predatory grace. Each one seemed to anticipate his movements, testing, probing, feeding on the fear and hesitation that lingered in his thoughts.

"Raviel," he whispered, concentrating. [Do not hold back. I will guide, but you must strike with intent.]

A surge of energy coursed through him, and the threads of his bond expanded outward. The Ether coils became a net, lashing across the hallways, striking several spirits at once. They dissipated into motes of pale light, leaving only wisps behind that the air swallowed quickly. But more kept coming, their numbers multiplying unnaturally.

Kairu's legs shook, adrenaline mingling with raw power. He ducked under a swinging limb, the cold tip of a spirit's claw grazing his shoulder. Pain flared, white-hot, and his coat snagged on the jagged stones, ripping at the seam. The mark on his hand pulsed in warning. He could feel the Ether around him warping, the threads tangling with those of the intruders, each collision leaving faint scorch marks on the floor and walls.

From the shadows, a voice — clear, melodic, but layered with malice — called out. "Ryoku Kairu…" It was not spoken aloud; the sound slipped directly into his mind. [Your power is… promising.]

Kairu stiffened. The voice was foreign, yet intimately tied to the threads of the spirits attacking him. It was a lure, a provocation.

"Raviel!" he hissed. [I feel it… too many. I cannot…]

[You can, Kairu. Focus on the core. Pull the threads, and let them respond. Do not falter.]

He obeyed. Drawing on the bond, he isolated the leader spirit — the one that had spoken — focusing all threads of Ether into a single, spiraling strike. The hall lit with silver fire as the energy wrapped around the spirit like chains of light, tightening with precision. The intruder shrieked again, a soundless echo that seemed to pierce the fabric of reality, then vanished in a flare of radiant motes.

The remaining spirits paused, as if uncertain, sensing the intensity of his power. Kairu's chest heaved, sweat mixing with the faint dust kicked up from the floor. The hall smelled of ozone and scorched stone, a testament to the raw energy that had passed through it.

Breathing hard, Kairu's gaze swept the corridor. The Ether threads still pulsed in his vision, connecting him to the dissipated spirits, feeding back into Raviel's consciousness. He could feel them reforming, coalescing once more, testing him again.

"Not yet…" he whispered, gripping the cold stone wall for support. "I'm not finished."

A flicker of silver light shot from his eyes, striking the remaining spirits and scattering them. One by one, they dissolved into the air, leaving only faint shimmering residue. Silence returned to the hall, broken only by Kairu's ragged breathing and the faint hum of the Ether threading through the stone.

Haruto and Sayuri arrived at the entrance, their own energy threads dancing along the edges of the doorway. Haruto's expression was tight, eyes scanning every shadow. "Are you… okay?" he asked, voice low but edged with concern.

Kairu nodded slowly, muscles trembling, chest heaving. "Yeah… I think so. They were… testing me."

Sayuri's gaze softened slightly. "Not just you, Kairu. They test all of us. But you… you're advancing faster than any student we've seen. Your bond with Raviel is… unusual."

[We have only begun, Kairu…] Raviel murmured, curling inside him like a living flame. [The threads will demand more. They will not relent.]

The three of them walked down the corridor together, the shadows of the night shifting around them, the faint traces of Ether marking the battle that had just passed. Above, the twin moons of Nirath reflected off the obsidian roofs, a silent witness to the first true test of Kairu's emerging power.

And somewhere in the distance, beyond the academy walls, a new threat stirred — drawn by the pulse of his bond, by the whispered promise of power. Kairu had survived the Night Class, but the shadows were far from over.
