Chapter 54 - Last Rites

In the hallway of 78 Kingston Road, a man timidly stepped out of his home, glancing back at the imposing figure in the small hall. Rodney hesitated slightly but still asked, "Are you really not coming? I wanted to spend time with you today."

The woman with her hands on her hips shouted, "But I don't want to spend time with you! And hurry back after you get your things. Are you planning not to do any business today? What will I eat then!"

Rodney lowered his gaze and asked softly, "Are you meeting Maiken? Can you two please not meet at home."

"What does that have to do with you? And is Maiken someone you can call by his name! Hurry up and leave, I don't want to see you."

"If you don't want to leave, then I'll leave for good, and I'll never come back!"

The woman angrily pulled a suitcase from under the bed. Rodney quickly said, "No, no, no, Kitty, I'm leaving now, I'm leaving right away."

He closed the door, tightened his clothes, and walked out of the building with his head down.

As soon as he stepped onto the street, a stone was thrown at his leg. Then, a yellow-haired boy with a missing front tooth ran ahead and made a face at him.

"Cowardly Rodney, timid Rodney. His wife is with another, he sees nothing, sees nothing."

"Useless Rodney, unlucky Rodney. He's always wronged and bullied, he dares not resist, dares not resist."

A group of children surrounded him, singing their self-made rhymes. Passersby pointed at him, but Rodney acted as if he saw nothing, heard nothing, and just kept walking with his head down.

Probably finding it boring, the yellow-haired, toothless boy waved his hand and led a group of children, rushing like the wind into the middle of the road.

He was suddenly held by a large hand, then pushed, and fell to the ground.

"Get out of the way, kid!"

The little boy looked up and saw a burly man with a rough face. He was wearing ill-fitting clothes and a Black Bowties tied at his collar.

It was incongruous, comical, but the little boy dared not laugh.

Because, this was Black Bowties!

Kingston Road's biggest Gang!

Sure enough, Black Bowties members passed by him one by one. The little boy also saw a short, stout man. He was wearing a shiny formal suit, a Black Bowties, and chewing a cigar, like a big shot from high society.

He looked at the little boy, but his gaze quickly moved away.

Doug withdrew his gaze from the mischievous child on the ground and grumbled, "There are too many people on this road. I say, can't you guys try harder and drive all those bastards ahead away for me!"

The Bearded Man bodyguard walking beside him said, "They're all going to the church to get things, Boss, are we going to get them too?"

Doug immediately kicked him, "Is your head full of straw? Who am I? Do I have to go with these lowly guys to get food?"

He tugged at his Black Bowties, loosening it slightly so it wouldn't choke him: "Listen up, we're doing something big today."

"I received news that this morning, besides the church distributing things, the Mayor and Sir Bison will also establish a 'Municipal Construction Fund' and raise money from the merchants in Town."

"This is a good opportunity, my chance to truly enter high society has come, do you understand, you idiots!"

Bearded Man nodded, half understanding, half not.

Doug snorted, then saw a subordinate with a gun ahead and immediately shouted, "Didn't I say, no weapons allowed on you!"

"Today, we are all gentlemen. Anyone with a weapon, get out!"

For a moment, his subordinates looked at each other, then four or five of them slunk away from the group.

"Idiots, a bunch of idiots!"

Arriving at Memorial Square, Doug saw Kaosi from afar. He quickly walked over, took off his cigar, placed his hand on his chest, and shouted loudly.

"Good morning, esteemed Kaosi."

Today, Kaosi was in charge of maintaining order at Memorial Square. He had brought all the police from his bureau, and even then, there still seemed to be a shortage of manpower.

He was busy and disoriented. Seeing Doug approach, Kaosi's face darkened, and he said to a sergeant, "Get him away from me. Also, warn him not to cause any trouble today, or I won't be polite to him!"

The sergeant nodded and went to deal with Doug. Just then, a police officer jogged over to report, "The Mayor and Baron Bison have arrived."

Kaosi immediately put on a smiling face and hurried to greet them. The police officer was about to follow when he suddenly noticed that the distant street was somewhat blurry.

It seemed, a fog was rising.

Eberly Mountain.

Martha, who had maintained an unchanged posture, suddenly took a deep breath. The black in her eyes receded, the whites appeared, and her pupils returned to normal.

She seemed greatly startled, her legs went weak, and she almost knelt on the ground.

Fortunately, Jeffrey next to her caught her in time and helped her to sit down.

Martha gasped for air, sweating profusely. After a moment, she cried, "Quick, we must return to Town!"

"The problem we were guarding against has still occurred."

She pointed at the wild wolf's corpse on the ground: "These beasts were driven by Gore. That thing deliberately made them attack just now, while it itself went to Enki Town."

"Its purpose should be to complete the final step of the ritual, to completely become a channel, to become a medium!"

Lex's mind buzzed, and he blurted out, "Oh no, there's an event in Town today, most residents will be gathered at Memorial Square."

"They will become the 'sacrifices' for the ritual!"

Lex dared not think further. Once Gore completed the last step of the ritual, the evil god would be able to descend directly into reality through it.

No matter what kind of evil god that was, once it descended, Enki Town would surely be doomed!

"We should make it in time."

Lex said hurriedly, "Even if it left first, the journey from here to Town is not short. We still have a chance to intercept it halfway!"

"There's no way." Pale-faced Jeffrey's expression was even worse now. He shook his head and said, "That thing called Gore is both in the Spirit Realm and in reality."

"It should be able to reach Enki Town quickly by using the Spirit Realm."

Lex's heart sank, but he remained calm and said in a deep voice, "Then how do we stop it?"

Martha stood up and emphasized, "It's us. It must be stopped by us. This is not an event ordinary people can interfere with."

She added, "We had foreseen this matter and had taken precautions. This is also one of the reasons why the Captain and Warren did not participate in the search. They are in Town now and will try to stop it."

Jeffrey nodded and said, "We'll rush back now. Once we're back in Town, Mr. Lex and the three of you, please hide in a safe place. We will handle the rest."

Lex nodded, not objecting, but he had other thoughts internally, which he did not express, nor was it convenient to express them.

Time was pressing. Everyone left in a hurry without packing or dealing with the wolf corpses, rushing back to the small Town.

Meanwhile, the fog in Town grew thicker and thicker.
