The subterranean transit shafts leading up from the Deep Salt Sink were no longer shrouded in pitch-black frost. As the massive golden energy beams of the awakened Secondary Core surged through the ancient conduits, the dark basalt walls radiated a steady, amber luminescence. Superheated steam hissed through long-dormant relief valves, thawing two decades of accumulated salt-ice and turning the freezing drafts from Gate Zero into swirling clouds of warm, mineral-rich fog.
In the main concourse of Sector 5, the mood was tense, frantic, and loud.
Master Oakes stood at the secondary barricade, his hands covered in fresh black grease as he slammed a heavy locking pin into the mounting frame of a newly reinforced rotary cannon. Beside him, Mara was barking orders at a team of twelve Sector 6 welders who were desperately fusing three-inch steel plates across the lower frame of the ruined Gate Zero blast doors.
"Hurry up with those arc-welders!" Mara yelled, her voice hoarse over the screeching of metal scrapers. "The surface pressure monitors are spiking! If those Gate Zero shafts aren't braced before the atmospheric pressure hits three atmospheres, those iron plates will buckle inward like tin foil!"
"We're moving as fast as the steam pressure allows, Chief!" a welder shouted back, brilliant blue sparks raining down from his torch onto the frosted deck floor. "The copper lines are holding, but the main pressure gauges are pinned in the red! Node 07 is outputting twice its normal thermal baseline!"
Maya stood atop the high catwalk, her long-range rifle resting across her shoulder while her left hand held her tactical slate close to her face. Her eyes scanned the telemetry readouts in utter disbelief. The golden lines representing the sector's energy grid were no longer flickering or fading. They were thick, vibrant, and expanding across every sub-tier on the map.
"Master Oakes! Mara! Look at these sensor sweeps!" Maya called down, her voice ringing clearly over the din of construction. "The energy output from the lower shafts just jumped to two hundred and ten percent! The auxiliary defense shields along the western catwalks are fully energized!"
Oakes paused, wiping his sweat-streaked forehead with his sleeve before looking toward the dark opening of the central transit shaft. "The kid did it... He actually woke up the deep vault!"
"It's not just energy, Master Oakes," Maya said, her brow furrowing as her scope picked up massive, rhythmic kinetic vibrations coming up from the deep transit tunnels. "Something heavy is moving up the Sub-Level 9 ramps. The vibration signatures don't match our miners or the Vanguard's treads. They're dense, fluid, and moving at thirty miles an hour!"
"Vanguard infiltrators?" Mara demanded, pulling a heavy pneumatic rivet gun from her belt and flicking off the safety catch. "Did Valerius drop a second stealth squad through the lower ventilation ducts?"
"Miners! Form a defensive line at the tunnel mouth!" Oakes roared, grabbing his heavy iron spanner and swinging his rotary cannon around to face the dark archway. "Rivet rifles up! Don't fire until you see the black armor!"
Fifty miners and pit-workers instantly dropped behind overturned supply hoppers and reinforced steel barriers, their steam rifles and heavy copper tools aimed directly into the fog-shrouded tunnel. The metallic clicking of dozens of weapon safeties disengaging echoed across the quiet concourse.
The heavy thudding sound grew louder, accompanied by a deep, resonant metallic hum that made the copper pipes along the walls vibrate in sympathy. Out of the swirling white steam bank stepped a single figure.
Danial Vance walked slowly out of the shadows. His dark coat was scorched and torn at the left sleeve, but his posture was upright and steady. His grey eyes were clear, framed by the bright, golden light radiating from the Gold Mark on his forearm. The bandages that had bound his hand were gone, replaced by a seamless weave of luminous, silver-gold lines that traced all the way up to his shoulder.
"Hold your fire!" Maya shouted from the upper catwalk, a massive sigh of relief escaping her lips as she lowered her rifle. "It's Danial! Stand down!"
"Hold the line, boys!" Oakes called out, lowering his rotary cannon slightly, though his eyes remained wide as he stared into the mist behind Danial. "Kid... what in the seven hells is that behind you?"
As Danial stepped into the illuminated center of the concourse, two massive, serpentine forms glided silently out of the steam behind him.
The two Selar Sentinels rose twenty feet into the air, their segmented bodies of polished bronze and copper catching the golden glare of the newly energized overhead lights. Their smooth, featureless faces turned toward the assembled militia, their single amber optical lenses pulsing with a soft, calm rhythm. The heavy, fluid grace with which they hovered above the stone deck made every miner in the plaza draw a sharp, collective breath of pure astonishment.
"By the mountain's core..." Mara breathed, her rivet gun slipping an inch in her grip as she stared up at the thirty-foot bronze constructs. "Those... those are ancient Selar guardians. They've been dead in the salt vaults for three hundred years!"
"They aren't dead anymore, Mara," Danial said, his voice quiet yet carrying across the entire concourse with clear, acoustic authority. He paused beside Oakes's barricade, resting his bare left palm against the heavy iron plate. "The Secondary Core beneath Sub-Level 9 is fully synchronized with Node 07. We have all the power we need."
Maya jogged down the catwalk stairs, her boots skidding to a halt five feet from the nearest Sentinel. She looked up at the massive bronze construct, watching as its segmented plates expanded and contracted like a breathing chest.
"How did you command them, Danial?" Maya asked, her voice filled with awe as she looked from the machine to his glowing arm. "The Directorate spent twenty years trying to salvage Selar technology from the lower vaults, and every scrap they recovered was inert."
"The Directorate tried to force the technology with iron hammers and high-frequency overrides," Danial explained, turning his left forearm to show the intricate, pulsing Gold Mark. "The Selar engines don't respond to force. They respond to resonance. The Abyss Engine isn't just a weapon, Maya—it's an administrative key. Once the Secondary Core was reignited, the Sentinels recognized the conduit pattern."
"Can they fight?" Oakes asked bluntly, stepping up beside Danial and squinting at the smooth bronze armor of the lead Sentinel. "Valerius isn't coming back with infantry squads and light Siege Breakers next time, kid. My sensors on the upper line are picking up massive atmospheric shifts on the surface. He's prepping his flagship."
Danial looked up toward the ceiling of Sector 5, where Gate Zero's ruined double doors were currently being reinforced by Mara's welding teams.
"The Apex Aegis," Danial said, his tone turning dark and focused. "He's going to use the ship's main Sector-Breach Cannon to punch through the mountain crust."
"Then we're going to need more than copper rivets and steam rifles," Mara said grimly, looking back at her welders. "If that dreadnought fires a Class-Zero plasma pulse straight down Gate Zero, it'll vaporize our upper bulkheads in five seconds."
"The Sentinels aren't just for defense, Mara," Danial replied, turning to face the two bronze constructs. He raised his left hand, his fingers forming a crisp, command gesture.
[COMMAND MATRIX: SELAR SENTINEL UNIT 01 & 02]
[TASK: PERIMETER FORTIFICATION & KINETIC ABSORPTION]
[TARGET ZONE: GATE ZERO UPPER SHAFT]
The two Sentinels emitted a low, harmonized chime that sounded like struck crystal. They reared back, their long, segmented bodies coiling smoothly before leaping thirty feet straight into the air toward the upper catwalks near Gate Zero. They settled into stationary perimeters on either side of the breached shaft, their long bronze tails wrapping around the heavy structural girders of the vault ceiling, turning their broad, armored bodies into living kinetic shields directly beneath the shaft opening.
"They're bracing the ceiling," Maya realized, her eyes widening as she checked her slate's structural integrity monitor. "Their internal energy fields are reinforcing the structural integrity of the entire upper arch! The rock density reading just tripled!"
"That buys us the ceiling," Oakes said, a grim grin spreading across his face as he slapped Danial on the shoulder. "Now, what about the floor?"
"The floor is ours," Danial declared, looking around at the gathered militia members who were now stepping forward out of their defensive cover, their faces filled with renewed hope and determination. "Mara, take half the engineering crew down to Sub-Level 9 and lock the auxiliary power lines straight into our primary shield generators. Oakes, get every rotary cannon wired directly into Node 07's high-voltage bypass taps. We aren't just going to absorb Valerius's assault."
Danial raised his glowing left fist, the golden light radiating off his knuckles like a beacon in the steaming concourse.
"When the Apex Aegis descends," Danial said, his voice echoing with absolute resolve, "we are going to hit it back with the full weight of the mountain."
A roaring cheer went up from the miners and workers across Sector 5, their tools raised high as the Free Sectors prepared to face the final descent of the surface army.
