Chapter 47 - The Clamour at Sector 4

The ancient iron gears of the primary lift ground against one another with a shriek that rattled Danial's back teeth.

Upward they rose, escaping the stagnant, dry cold of the Sub-Level 8 salt strata.

The air inside the mesh-wire cage transformed second by second.

The sterile scent of deep mineral salt gave way to the heavy, familiar stench of Sector 4.

Rancid grease, damp insulation, recycled oxygen, and the bitter tang of cheap synthetic stew.

Maya stood against the far iron railing, her hand still resting lightly on the grip of her pistol.

She watched the dark rock walls blur past through the open steel grate.

"Vance won't take the loss of a six-man tactical squad quietly," she said, her voice barely carrying over the mechanical roar of the rising lift.

"He doesn't have a choice," Danial replied, his eyes fixed on the floor indicators above the brass dial.

[SUB-LEVEL 3]

[SUB-LEVEL 2]

[SUB-LEVEL 1]

"He lost his leverage the second the Abyss Engine clicked into gear," Danial continued.

He adjusted his dark canvas coat, pulling the collar up to hide the faint amber light pulsing beneath his left sleeve.

"Vance maintained control over the Joint Governance Charter because he owned the auxiliary generators."

"If Node 06 is pumping thermal power directly into the residential blocks, his monopoly is dead."

[SECTOR 4: PRIMARY PLATFORM REACHED]

CLACK-CLACK-CLANG.

The mechanical lift hit the heavy rubber dampers at the main docking station, coming to a shuddering halt.

The iron gates did not open automatically.

Through the diamond-patterned steel mesh, Danial could see the chaos unfolding across the lower catwalks of Sector 4.

Usually, the primary docking bay was a quiet, militarized checkpoint manned by Vance's private enforcers.

Today, it was a battleground of screaming voices, flashing red warning lights, and thick white steam.

Steam was venting from the overhead municipal pipes—real, scorching steam that hadn't flowed through Sector 4 in three decades.

"Look at the crowd," Maya whispered, stepping up to the grate.

Down on the lower concourse, hundreds of citizens from the lower tiers were pouring into the central plaza.

They weren't wearing their heavy, ratty winter coats anymore.

Many had stripped off their outer layers, holding their bare hands toward the massive iron radiators mounted along the concourse walls.

The radiators, cold and rusted for generations, were glowing a faint, dull orange.

"It's hot!" a man down on the catwalk screamed, his voice cracking with disbelief. "The wall pipes are burning!"

"Node 06 is online!" another voice shouted through a crackling megaphone. "The central grid has stabilized!"

Beyond the cheering crowds, however, stood the iron-clad guards of the Joint Governance Charter.

Two dozen enforcers in blue-and-gray tactical vests were trying to push the crowd back with electrified batons.

At the center of the enforcer line stood a tall man in a tailored, heavy wool trench coat.

Alderman Vance.

His slicked-back gray hair reflected the stark red glare of the emergency beacons.

In his right hand, he held a gold-rimmed data pad, his fingers flying across the interface in a panic.

"I don't care where the power is coming from!" Vance roared at the sergeant standing beside him.

"Isolate the distribution lines! Route ninety percent of that thermal feed to the upper-tier estates immediately!"

"We can't, Alderman!" the sergeant yelled back, struggling to keep his helmet straight against the surging crowd.

"The core relay was bypassed from Sub-Level 8!"

"The flow is hard-locked into the public grid! If we try to sever the line, the back-pressure will blow the primary transformers in Sector 3!"

Vance's face contorted with rage.

He slammed the data pad against the sergeant's chest armor.

"Then find out who is down in Vault 8-B! My breaching team was supposed to report twenty minutes ago!"

"They aren't reporting, Alderman," Danial's voice echoed across the platform.

The iron gate of the lift groaned as Danial pushed it open with his boot, the rusted hinges whining in protest.

The noise cut through the chaotic clamour of the concourse.

Every head in the immediate vicinity snapped toward the elevator shaft.

The enforcers raised their shock batons, while the surrounding citizens shrank back against the steaming iron radiators.

Vance turned slowly, his sharp eyes narrowing as he recognized Danial and Maya stepping off the platform.

For a fraction of a second, Vance's gaze darted behind them, searching the dark elevator shaft for his six heavy tactical enforcers.

No one else emerged.

"You," Vance spat, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous tone. "Scavenger."

"You were supposed to be rotting in the salt mines with the rest of the unregistered dead."

Danial walked forward with steady, unhurried steps.

His boots clicked against the damp iron floor plates, echoing in the brief lull that had fallen over the plaza.

"Your breaching team ran into environmental complications in Sub-Level 8," Danial said, stopping ten feet from the enforcer line.

"The cold down there is very unforgiving, Alderman."

Maya remained two steps behind Danial, her hand resting casually near her holster, her eyes scanning the high catwalks for snipers.

Vance's eyes twitched.

He was a man who lived on numbers, leverage, and political maneuvering.

He knew instantly what "environmental complications" meant when spoken by a survivor stepping out of an unsealed vault.

"You tampered with the ancient infrastructure," Vance said, trying to regain control of his audience, turning toward the gathered citizens.

"This man is an unregistered rogue! He has illegally tapped into the Directorate's restricted reserves!"

"He is putting every soul in Sector 4 at risk of an immediate grid collapse!"

"Seize him!" Vance shouted, pointing a gloved finger at Danial. "Seize them both!"

The enforcers hesitated for a split second.

They looked at Danial, then looked down at the floor beneath their feet.

The floor plates were warm.

The air in their lungs was no longer freezing their windpipes.

The people behind them—the thousands of cold, starving laborers of Sector 4—were beginning to rumble.

"Touch him and we tear down the gate!" a voice shouted from the back of the crowd.

"He turned the heat on!" another woman screamed, holding up a small child whose face was no longer pale blue.

"Leave him alone!"

The energy in the plaza shifted violently.

The Joint Governance Charter had ruled Sector 4 through the strict rationing of heat and oxygen for forty years.

When heat was scarce, obedience was a matter of survival.

Now, with the pipes hissing and the walls radiating comfort, the fear that held the populace in check was evaporating like the salt mist down below.

Vance felt the shift immediately.

His jaw tightened, his hand dropping to the holster at his hip.

"You think you've won something, boy?" Vance said in a harsh whisper that only Danial could hear.

"You think giving these rats a few degrees of warmth makes you a lord?"

"You don't understand how the world works above the cloud line."

"The Joint Governance Charter doesn't own this power grid. We manage it for the Directorate."

"When the Directorate sees the energy spikes on Node 06, they won't send administrative clerks."

"They will send Vanguard dreadnoughts."

"They will purge Sector 4 to the bedrock just to reset the meters."

Danial didn't flinch.

He took one step closer to Vance, lowering his voice to match the Alderman's quiet tone.

"Let them come," Danial said.

"The Directorate built their empire on the assumption that the deep vaults were empty."

"They don't know what's waking up under the salt."

Danial leaned in slightly, his dark eyes locking onto Vance's pale gray ones.

"And if you try to shut down Node 06, Alderman..."

"...I will take you down to Sub-Level 8 myself and let you explain your policy to the statues."

Vance's breath caught in his throat.

He looked into Danial's eyes and saw no bluff, no political posturing, and no fear.

He saw the cold, absolute authority of someone who had stood in the dark with monsters and walked back out.

Slowly, Vance withdrew his hand from his sidearm.

He straightened his trench coat, taking a small step back into the safety of his enforcer guard.

"This isn't over, scavenger," Vance muttered, his voice trembling slightly despite his effort to remain composure.

"The Charter will convene an emergency session."

"You won't be allowed to leave Sector 4."

"I don't need to leave," Danial said, turning his back on the Alderman and walking toward the main residential archway.

"Sector 4 is ours now."

The news of Node 06's reactivation spread through the sprawling, vertical slums of Sector 4 like wildfire.

By nightfall—or what passed for night in the cavernous underground district when the overhead industrial lights were dimmed to thirty percent—the atmosphere had completely transformed.

For the first time in memory, people were sleeping without five layers of heavy wool blankets.

The sound of coughing, which usually echoed through the metallic corridors like a endless drumbeat, had subsided.

Danial and Maya sat in the back room of a small, secluded repair shop near the sector's eastern rim.

The shop belonged to an old mechanic named Master Oakes, a former Directorate technician who had lost his left eye to a steam explosion thirty years ago.

Oakes was currently sitting at his workbench, examining the cracked security keycard Danial had retrieved from Sub-Level 8 under a heavy magnifying glass.

"This is ancient," Oakes muttered, using a pair of fine brass tweezers to inspect the exposed micro-circuitry.

"This isn't Charter tech. This is pre-Cooling era... high-tier Directorate Administrative clearance."

"Can you read the data logs stored on the backup chip?" Maya asked, sitting on an overturned oil drum while cleaning her sidearm.

Oakes spat a wad of dark tobacco into a rusted tin can.

"Read it? Girl, this chip is broadcasting a passive signal right now."

"It's an encrypted hand-shake protocol."

"Every time Danial's little glove touches a terminal, this card is recording the administrative signatures."

Danial sat quietly in the corner, his left arm resting on his knee.

Underneath his canvas sleeve, the Gold Mark was quiet, but it felt... different.

It wasn't just maintaining his body temperature anymore.

Ever since he had clashed with the $-50^\circ\text{C}$ Selar lattice down in the vault, the golden runes had expanded slightly, fine golden threads creeping an inch further up his forearm toward his elbow.

"Oakes," Danial said, breaking his silence. "How much do you know about the Great Cooling?"

The old mechanic paused, his tweezers hovering over the green circuit board.

He slowly set his tools down and leaned back in his creaky wooden chair, his single eye staring into the dim yellow light of his workbench lamp.

"What everyone knows," Oakes said gruffly.

"In the late 2100s, the sun started losing its thermal output. Or so the official history books say."

"The oceans froze over, the atmosphere thinned, and the remnants of humanity crawled down into the thermal vents and deep salt mines to build the nodes."

"That's the Charter's version," Danial said softly. "What's the truth?"

Oakes stared at Danial for a long moment, then reached under his desk and pulled out a dusty glass bottle filled with a cloudy, amber liquid.

He took a long swig, wiped his mouth with his sleeve, and offered the bottle to Danial.

Danial shook his head.

Oakes set the bottle down with a heavy thud.

"When I was a junior apprentice up in the Victorian Sump forty years ago," Oakes began, lowering his voice, "I worked on the primary deep-core drills."

"We weren't drilling for geothermal heat, Danial."

"We were digging up old archives."

"I saw a fragment of an original log from 2387. A research station in Greenland."

"They didn't find cold, Danial. They found something causing the cold."

Maya stopped cleaning her pistol, looking up at the old man.

"The Selar," she said softly.

Oakes' single eye widened slightly. He looked toward the closed shop door, as if afraid the walls themselves had ears.

"You know that name?" Oakes whispered.

"We saw them," Maya said. "Down in Sub-Level 8."

"Not just dust, Oakes. Full units. Entombed in the salt walls."

Oakes took another quick swig from his bottle, his hands shaking slightly.

"Then God help us all," the old man muttered.

"The Directorate isn't hoarders, Danial. They aren't just greedy lords hoarding heat to rule over us."

"They're terrified."

"Everything they build—the heavy shields, the sector walls, the Joint Governance Charter—it's not meant to keep the citizens in."

"It's meant to keep the crust silent."

"Because every time we turn on a high-yield thermal reactor like the Abyss Engine, we light a torch in the dark."

"And whatever is sleeping in the ice..."

"...it always comes to put the fire out."

As if answering Oakes' words, a sudden, low vibration rolled through the repair shop floor.

It wasn't the rhythmic thud of the Abyss Engine.

This was a sharp, high-frequency tremor that made the tools hanging on the pegboard rattle against the wood.

ZZZZ-CRACK.

The overhead yellow light fixture flickered violently, its filaments buzzing like angry hornets.

Across the room, the small radio receiver on Oakes' workbench burst into loud, static-filled life.

"—Attention all sectors! Attention all Joint Governance units!"

A panicking voice screamed through the speaker, distorted by heavy atmospheric interference.

"—Unidentified signal detected on the upper perimeter! Sector 4 North Gate is experiencing localized power drainage!"

"—The thermal lines are freezing! I repeat, the main North Gate thermal lines are freezing from the outside in!"

Maya sprang to her feet, shoving her pistol back into its holster.

"The Charter?" she asked, looking at Danial.

"No," Danial said, standing up and pulling his sleeve down tight over his wrist.

"Vance uses explosives and carbines. He doesn't freeze thermal lines."

The Gold Mark on Danial's arm burned hot, the golden light shining through the heavy dark fabric of his coat.

"They're already here," Danial said.

He looked at Maya, his expression calm, hardened, and resolute.

"Get your gear, Maya."

"It's time to show Sector 4 what we're really fighting against."
