February arrived with midterms, Valentine's Day panic, and an unexpected phone call that changed everything.
I was in the library, drowning in Organic Chemistry practice problems, when my phone lit up with Kai's name. He never called during the day we texted to avoid interrupting each other's classes so I answered immediately.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong. Actually, something's really right." His voice was excited, almost breathless. "I got the internship."
"Kai! That's amazing!"
"Shh!" someone hissed from a nearby table.
I grabbed my stuff and headed outside, grinning like an idiot. "Tell me everything."
"They called like twenty minutes ago. They want me for the full summer, June through August. It's even better than the posting said they're working on some cutting-edge neural interface stuff, and I'd be on the actual development team, not just fetching coffee."
"I told you you'd get it."
"You did. I should listen to you more often."
"Yes, you should. I'm very wise."
