Chapter 18 - Chapter 17: A Night Beneath the Same Sky

The mountain air was cold, yet the warmth of her presence made the night feel almost gentle. Sophea sat beside the small fire, her face glowing beneath the flickering light. The orange flames reflected in her eyes as if they carried the same quiet pain and strength she had kept hidden all this time.

Samreth watched her silently, every breath heavy with exhaustion and emotion. He could still hardly believe she was here—alive, real, breathing the same air after so many sleepless nights and hopeless prayers.

When Sophea noticed his gaze, she looked away quickly, hiding the soft tremble in her hands. "You shouldn't have come all this way," she whispered. "It was dangerous."

"I would walk again if it meant finding you," he said softly. "Even if the road never ended."

For a moment, neither spoke. Only the sound of the night—the whisper of leaves, the crackling fire, and the quiet rhythm of their hearts—filled the silence.

Sophea sighed and wrapped her shawl tighter. "You look terrible," she murmured, glancing at his torn jacket and dirt-covered hands. "Did you even eat?"

He laughed weakly. "Not really. I was too afraid that if I stopped, you'd disappear again."

She reached out then, hesitantly, her fingers brushing his cheek. "You fool," she said with a trembling smile. "I waited for you too."

That was when something inside him broke — not from pain, but from relief. He leaned closer, resting his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the cool mountain air.

Neither spoke. The silence said enough.

Later, as the fire dimmed and the stars watched over them, Sophea laid her head on his chest. "You're really staying this time?" she whispered.

He kissed the top of her hair gently. "Until the world ends."

Her hand found his, and they intertwined fingers, holding each other as if afraid the night might steal them apart again.

And under that endless sky — broken hearts found a moment of peace. For the first time in so long, Samreth finally slept, with Sophea's heartbeat guiding him home.
